Start by checking OBS’s Stats: rising Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection to YouTube; Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag points to local workload. If those counters stay healthy but viewers report buffering, investigate their playback path instead. These problems have different causes, so change one thing at a time and recheck the same indicator.
First, identify where the stutter occurs
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while the playlist is playing and the stream is live or in a representative test. Note whether the OBS connection indicator changes and whether the preview itself stutters. Record the figures before making changes.

- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS says these indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or that the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to compensate. This is a network path clue, not proof that the playlist file is faulty. OBS: Dropped Frames and Why They Matter.
- Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to render the scene in time, commonly due to local graphics workload.
- Encoding Lag: OBS is struggling to encode frames in time, indicating local encoding or resource pressure.
- Only viewers report buffering: Their devices or internet connections may be the bottleneck even when the broadcaster’s counters are healthy. Compare playback on another device or connection before changing OBS settings. OBS: Streaming With Too High of a Bitrate.
OBS documents network drops separately from rendering and encoding overload; changing an audio delay or buying hardware before checking these indicators can target the wrong problem. See OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

Check that OBS is playing the playlist reliably
Confirm the source type and VLC dependency
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed. If you run 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the source can use it. The standard Media Source handles individual listed media files and includes a loop option; VLC Video adds playlist controls, including loop playlist and shuffle. VLC Video also exposes network caching for network media, but there is no single cache value established as a fix for every stuttering playlist. OBS: Media Sources.

Test the actual files and playback path
- Check whether the stutter is visible in the OBS preview. If so, the issue is already present before YouTube playback; focus first on source playback or local rendering and encoding counters.
- Play the same playlist files through the source you intend to use. Check whether one specific file, transition, or playlist item triggers the symptom.
- If you switch between Media Source and VLC Video, compare the same files and the same test segment. VLC’s playlist support is useful, but the documented features do not guarantee smoother playback in every setup.
- Confirm the source’s loop and playlist behavior is configured as intended. Avoid changing several source settings simultaneously, or it will be harder to identify what helped.
Fix rendering or encoding lag by reducing local work
If the corresponding OBS counters rise, reduce scene and encoding load before troubleshooting Wi-Fi or changing audio sync. OBS recommends simplifying scenes, reducing expensive sources and filters, limiting browser sources, and using Media Source or VLC Source for audio and video files where appropriate. Change one item at a time and check whether the same lag counter improves.
- Disable or simplify filters and sources that are not needed during the playlist stream.
- Reduce the number of browser sources or other demanding animated elements in the scene.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot keep up. OBS notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce workload; the trade-off is lower motion smoothness.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator, which OBS lists as a quick troubleshooting step.
These changes target local rendering or encoding pressure. They will not repair an unstable route to YouTube ingest. See OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide for the documented options.

Fix rising network dropped frames
If Dropped Frames (Network) rises, test whether the connection can reliably sustain the stream’s bitrate and investigate the route from the streaming computer to YouTube ingest.

OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed, but that is a starting point, not a guarantee: upload capacity must be stable, and YouTube’s settings and limits still apply. A lower bitrate can improve stability but may reduce image quality.
- Test wired Ethernet if you use Wi-Fi. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable. A cable is a useful way to isolate suspected wireless problems; it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
- Try another available streaming server. OBS includes this among network troubleshooting steps. Compare the dropped-frame counter during a similar test.
- Check network software and components. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network utilities, drivers, and hardware as possible factors to investigate. Change or temporarily test one factor at a time where safe.

Match OBS output to YouTube’s live guidance
Test before the stream using audio and video motion similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and any messages. YouTube’s current published guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its suggested bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; the examples below are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that your connection can sustain them.

Use the recommendation for your actual codec and output format rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube also automatically transcodes live streams for different viewer formats, but that does not prevent buffering on a viewer’s device or connection. Isolate audio problems without guessing a delay
Watch the playlist source’s audio meter in OBS. Listen as early as possible in the source or device path, then listen again through OBS monitoring. The point where sound first becomes irregular helps narrow whether the issue is in playback, routing, or the OBS output path. OBS’s audio guidance emphasizes monitoring at the source and again in OBS: OBS: Audio Monitoring Guide.
YouTube’s live guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. That recommendation alone does not establish that a sample-rate mismatch is causing a particular stutter. Do not add an arbitrary sync offset: measure whether the sound is early or late and by how much before adjusting sync settings. YouTube’s encoder settings include its audio recommendations.

If OBS looks healthy but viewers still buffer
Ask whether the report is about interrupted playback, rather than audio-video sync or a stutter also visible in the OBS preview. Check OBS’s network and lag counters, then compare the stream from another viewer device or internet connection. OBS notes that viewer devices and connections differ; a stream can appear healthy at the broadcaster while a particular viewer struggles. If buffering is widespread, consider whether the chosen bitrate and resolution are practical for the intended audience, while balancing reach against picture quality. OBS’s bitrate guidance explains this trade-off.
