Fix an OBS Media Source Black Screen in a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Check the source and playback settings first, then compare OBS preview and local recording with YouTube to locate where a 24/7 stream goes black.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking the Media Source’s file, visibility, position in the Sources list, and playback settings—not YouTube’s bitrate. Then compare the OBS preview and a short local recording with YouTube’s previews to find where the picture disappears. A clip that has finished playing can leave an empty source when looping is off.

Check the media file and source properties first

  1. In OBS, select the Media Source in the Sources dock and open its properties. Confirm that it points to the intended local file. If you are unsure about the file, open it outside OBS and confirm that it plays.

  2. Check the file type. OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; supported audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. A supported extension alone does not guarantee that a particular file will decode correctly. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

  3. Check the OBS preview with the source selected. If the picture is already black there, troubleshoot the source and scene before changing YouTube’s encoder settings.

Make sure OBS is not hiding the source

  • In the Sources dock, confirm the source’s eye icon is enabled.

  • Check whether another source—such as an image, color, browser, or video source—is listed above it. OBS draws sources higher in the list over those below, so an opaque source can cover the media.

  • Confirm the media source is positioned and sized inside the canvas. A source outside the visible canvas can be active but not appear in the output.

These stacking and visibility controls are described in OBS Project’s Sources Guide.

Check whether playback ended or looping is disabled

Watch the OBS preview from the start of the clip through its end. In the Media Source properties, inspect Loop: OBS documents its default as off. If a finite clip finishes, the source may become empty; Show nothing when playback ends also defaults on. Turning on Restart playback when source becomes active restarts a clip when the source is activated, but it does not make the clip loop continuously. Enable Loop when the same file should repeat. Labels can vary by OBS version; consult the installed version’s properties and the OBS Media Sources guide.

Choose Media Source or VLC Video for your content

Option Best fit Looping and requirements
Media Source One compatible local file, including common formats listed in OBS documentation. Loop is off by default; turn it on for continuous playback.
VLC Video A playlist or content needing VLC’s extended media support. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Loop Playlist defaults on.

OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support over the built-in source. For one compatible file, the built-in Media Source is the simpler option; VLC Video is useful when you need playlist behavior. Neither choice guarantees that every file will play on every system. Details are in OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

Find where the black image first appears

  1. OBS preview: If black here, revisit the file path, source visibility and order, canvas placement, and playback state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Local recording: Record a short sample while the clip is visibly playing in OBS. If the preview is right but the recording is not, inspect OBS’s output and scene setup.

  3. YouTube Live Control Room preview: If the local recording is correct but this preview is not, check the stream configuration, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and whether representative movement and audio are reaching YouTube.

  4. Public watch page: Compare it with the Live Control Room preview. A difference at this stage points away from assuming the Media Source itself is the cause; inspect YouTube’s live status and playback path.

Investigate performance only if the symptoms fit

If the source is visible but output is choppy, delayed, or dropping frames, then check OBS’s rendering and encoding workload. OBS notes that scene compositing and rendering use GPU resources; its performance guide recommends reducing unnecessary scene complexity and using appropriately lower-resolution media when high resolution is not needed. A black frame by itself does not establish GPU overload. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

  • Remove sources and filters that are not needed for the scene.

  • Use media at a resolution appropriate to the stream when a larger file is unnecessary.

  • Look for OBS overload indications and correlate them with choppy or lagging output before changing performance settings.

Keep YouTube encoder settings separate from source diagnosis

Bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, and resolution govern the stream sent to YouTube; they do not repair a file that is hidden, finished, or black in the OBS preview. If the local picture and recording are correct but YouTube is not receiving a clean stream, use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists H.264 recommendations of 5 Mbps at 1080p/30fps and 6 Mbps at 720p/60fps; these are ingestion recommendations, not guarantees. Its page also specifies supported video options (H.264, H.265, or AV1), AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds.

Plan recording and playback for a 24/7 stream

Do not treat YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a long broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local archive backup. This limit concerns archive capture, not the cause of a black OBS source. For continuous streams, check that the local recording file is growing and that you have storage available. YouTube also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, which is a viewer-navigation issue rather than a source failure. See Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream rather than diagnosing a local OBS scene, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
