If your OBS study stream has gone black, first check whether the picture is missing in the OBS preview or only on YouTube. A black preview usually points to the source or capture setup; a correct preview with a black or buffering live stream calls for checking output and connection instead. The right fix depends on your source type, operating system, OBS version and, on some Windows laptops, GPU setup.
1. Find where the picture disappears
- Look at the affected source in the OBS preview. If it is black there, troubleshoot source visibility and capture settings first.
- If the preview looks right, check the stream output and the destination playback. A blank or buffering YouTube player is not the same symptom as a black capture source.
- Note which source you are using—Display Capture, Window Capture, Game Capture or, on macOS, Screen Capture—and record your operating system and OBS version before changing settings.
OBS distinguishes capture-source problems from dropped frames and intermittent disconnections. The latter can indicate trouble between your computer and the streaming ingest server, rather than a missing desktop or window image.

2. Match the fix to your capture source and system
Display or window capture
Use Display Capture when you need the desktop, or Window Capture when you need one application window. On macOS, use the macOS Screen Capture source. Game Capture is a Windows-only source in OBS’s quick-start guidance; do not switch to it as a general fix for a blank desktop capture.
Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that you selected the intended display or window. If you have several scenes, verify that the live scene contains the source you are checking.

Windows 10 display capture method
OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guide documents a newer display capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or higher with OBS 27 or higher. Automatic is the default; if it does not work, the guide suggests opening the Display Capture source properties and manually trying the “Windows 10” capture method. This is a version-specific Windows step, not a fix to apply on macOS or Linux, and the older guide does not establish that every later Windows build behaves identically.
Multi-GPU Windows laptops
A laptop may have integrated and discrete GPUs. OBS explains that capture or performance issues can arise when OBS and the application being captured use different GPUs. Its GPU-selection guidance gives different recommendations depending on whether you use Game/Window Capture or Display Capture; its laptop guide recommends leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU in the cases it describes.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Check OBS’s current official GPU-selection and laptop troubleshooting instructions for your Windows version and source type. Apply the recommendation for that capture path, and restart OBS if the setting requires it. Do not assume one GPU assignment is correct for every capture source.
3. If the preview works, check performance and connection separately
Choppy output or encoding overload
A working preview with choppy output can indicate that rendering or encoding is struggling because GPU resources are overloaded. OBS’s encoding guidance suggests reducing workload—for example, simplifying scenes or lowering output resolution or frame rate if necessary. These measures address performance problems; they are not a guaranteed repair for a source that is black in the preview.

Dropped frames or disconnections
OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its connection troubleshooting guidance includes trying wired networking. Treat this as a network branch: buying a capture card, GPU or other hardware is not established as the remedy for a black capture source.
4. Validate before leaving a study stream unattended
- Start the exact scene and source you intend to leave running.
- Confirm the OBS preview shows the picture, then verify that the destination playback also shows it.
- Watch OBS’s status indicators while the stream runs. Check for a black source, rendering or encoding strain, dropped frames and disconnections as distinct symptoms.
- Test the settings for a few minutes at minimum, as OBS recommends. For an always-on use case, a longer validation period is a prudent extra check, not a duration guaranteed by OBS.
No configuration can be presented here as a universal 24/7 uptime setting. Recheck version-specific instructions against the current OBS and operating-system interface.
