A separate South African incident involving operational technology (OT) that supports weather services offers a concrete reminder: systems that inform operational decisions matter even when they are not direct control systems. The incident report does not establish that core air traffic control systems were compromised.
Today’s OT security headlines
Viakoo’s October 2, 2026 briefing is a compact secondary roundup. Its five items cover different kinds of claims, so they should not be read as equally verified incident reports: some describe policy or coordination, one describes a threat group’s reported activity, and one is a vendor deployment claim.

- Awareness: The briefing describes CISA’s 2026 “Securing the Next 250” awareness campaign.
- Critical-infrastructure coordination: Viakoo reports that the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure expanded to nearly 50 companies across six sectors. That figure is attributed to Viakoo’s briefing and was not independently verified in the available reporting.
- Threat activity: Viakoo reports that the Longlegs/Storm-2603 group exploited on-premises SharePoint flaws in intrusions that culminated in Warlock ransomware.
- Industrial deployment: Viakoo says ARIA Cybersecurity expanded AZT PROTECT deployment at a pharmaceutical producer. This is a vendor-related deployment claim, not independent evidence of security effectiveness.
- Reporting requirements: The roundup points to a GAO report on overlap among federal and sector-specific cyber incident reporting requirements.
These items touch resilience and governance as well as technical threats. The briefing does not make them interchangeable: an awareness campaign or a reporting analysis is not an intrusion, and a deployment announcement does not demonstrate measured risk reduction.
What happened at South Africa’s air navigation services?
SANS NewsBites’ October 2 issue reports that South Africa’s Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) sought outside forensic support after detecting suspicious activity in OT environments supporting weather-related services. SANS says the malware appeared consistent with early ransomware activity and that monitoring indicated data may have been exfiltrated.
#1 Best Overall
The account does not say that core air traffic control systems were compromised. The reported activity was in OT supporting weather-related services; the available account does not establish an impact on air traffic control itself.
Why weather and other supporting systems matter
A system need not directly steer equipment to matter to operational safety. SANS editor Marc Sachs, Senior Vice President and Chief Engineer, put it this way: “Weather systems may not directly control an aircraft or issue an air traffic control instruction, yet their data feeds operational decisions.” If supporting data is unavailable or its integrity is uncertain, people and processes that rely on it may have to make decisions with reduced confidence.
Rank #2
That dependency principle applies beyond aviation: OT security includes the services and data systems that inform operations, not just the equipment on a direct control path. Operators need to know which services feed decisions, what depends on them, and how operations should respond if their availability or integrity is in doubt.

What OT operators can take from the incident
SANS Community Instructor Lee Neely advises: “Don’t wait for the incident to perform a security assessment — particularly for OT systems, which are a hot target right now.” He also emphasizes keeping a services map and inventory that is better than an attacker’s. Applied in practice, that means building readiness around dependencies as well as devices.

- Map services and dependencies: Record the OT assets, supporting services, data feeds, owners, and operational processes that rely on them.
- Assess before an incident: Identify exposed or poorly understood systems and decide how to investigate suspicious activity without creating unnecessary operational disruption.
- Monitor and plan response: Define who assesses alerts, how forensic support is engaged, and what decisions follow when a system’s data integrity or availability cannot be trusted.
What to know about NIST’s OT security guide
NIST’s OT Security project page says work to revise Special Publication 800-82 began on January 22, 2026, with the aim of incorporating lessons learned and aligning the guide with relevant NIST guidance and OT cybersecurity standards and practices. The project page is the appropriate place to check the revision’s current stage; the start date alone does not establish a release date or present status.

For this roundup, distinguish the type and source of each claim. SANS provides a separate, contemporaneous account of the ATNS activity and attributed commentary from its editors. The other five topics above are reported through Viakoo’s briefing; the underlying primary sources for every item were not all independently checked in the available material. Treat the Alliance membership figure, SharePoint intrusion account, and AZT PROTECT deployment as attributed reports rather than independently confirmed findings.
