Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A consent cookie can be present in a browser and still fail to suppress a cookie banner. The cookie may not apply to the screenshot URL, may contain a value the site does not recognize, may be set in a different browser context, or may be cleared before the page loads. Check the exact URL and application behavior, set consent state in the same context before navigation, then verify the banner after the app initializes.
Check whether the cookie applies to the screenshot URL
A cookie appearing in a browser’s storage view does not prove that the browser sends it to the page being captured. Compare the cookie’s name, value, domain, path, Secure and SameSite attributes with the exact URL you screenshot. Domain and path determine where it applies; Secure and SameSite can also affect when it is sent. Cypress documents these cookie scope options in its cy.setCookie() reference.
With Playwright, inspect cookies for the specific page URL rather than relying on a general cookie listing. BrowserContext.cookies() accepts URLs and returns cookies affecting those URLs. When adding a cookie, provide either a URL or both a domain and path; the API also supports attributes such as expiry, HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite and partition keys for partitioned third-party cookies.

Confirm the consent value and storage contract
There is no universal consent cookie name or value. An application may expect a particular name, a specific value, or a structured consent payload; it may instead read local storage, another browser store, or state supplied by its consent-management platform. Inspect the site’s initialization code or documentation to find what it actually checks. Browser automation documentation cannot determine the expected format for an unidentified site.
Cypress uses cookieConsent=accepted as an illustrative example, not a standard that every site follows. Set the real cookie name and value required by the target application.

Set consent in the context before the page loads
Seed known consent state in the same browser context that will navigate to and capture the page. Do it before navigation or before the application initializes: setting the cookie after the app has already read consent may leave the banner visible until the next load or until the app is explicitly refreshed. With Playwright, cookies belong to a BrowserContext; add them to the context that creates the page, then navigate and inspect cookies for the page URL. See BrowserContext.addCookies().
For Cypress, set a known cookie in a beforeEach hook so it is available at the start of each test. Cypress recommends this pattern for consent or feature-flag cookies in its cy.setCookie() documentation.

Cypress clears cookies before each test by default. If the banner returns at the start of every test, repeat the known consent setup in beforeEach. For state created through a server-side login or other setup flow, Cypress’s cy.session() can cache and restore browser context state, including cookies and web storage. Disabling test isolation is another option, but it allows tests to affect one another, so use it only when that trade-off is intentional.
Distinguish a consent behavior test from a visual mask
If the test is meant to prove consent works, let the application initialize and assert that the banner is absent (or otherwise in its expected state). Hiding the banner with screenshot-only CSS can isolate layout differences, but it does not prove that the application recognized consent or would suppress the banner for a visitor. If masking is intentional for a visual baseline, document it as part of the test.
Consent platforms can initialize asynchronously, and their selectors differ. Browserless’s cookie-consent example advises adapting selectors to the banner framework. Prefer waiting for an application-ready signal or a relevant selector over assuming a fixed delay is always sufficient.
Compare screenshots in a stable environment
Once the state is correct, keep the browser and host configuration consistent when comparing visual snapshots. Playwright notes that rendering may vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode, among other factors. See Playwright’s screenshot comparison guidance.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- The cookie is visible, but the banner appears immediately. Check its domain, path and applicable URL; verify the expected value and storage mechanism; then confirm it was set before navigation in the page’s own context.
- The banner returns for every Cypress test. Cypress test isolation clears cookies by default. Set the known state in
beforeEach, or restore a server-created state withcy.session(). - The cookie exists in one Playwright page but not the screenshot page. Confirm both pages use the intended
BrowserContextand inspectcontext.cookies([pageUrl])for the exact capture URL. - The banner flashes, then disappears—or remains despite a correct cookie. Check when the consent code reads state and whether initialization is asynchronous. Wait for the app’s relevant ready condition before capturing; verify that the cookie payload is the format the app consumes.
- The banner is absent but the test still fails visually. Stabilize the browser, operating system and rendering settings. If CSS masking is used, distinguish that visual baseline from a test of real consent behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting a consent cookie prove the site accepted consent?
No. It proves only that browser state was set; confirm that the application reads that cookie and that the banner reaches its expected state.
Can I hide a consent banner in the screenshot?
Yes, for a deliberately masked visual baseline, but masking does not test whether the site recognizes consent.
