If a Playwright screenshot shows a cookie preference center unexpectedly, first decide whether the test should show the center or the page after a choice. Inspect the rendered dialog and its accessible controls, account for an iframe if present, interact with the real control when dismissal is intended, and assert the resulting preference state separately from the screenshot. Without the site’s DOM, test, and Playwright version, there is no single verified locator or fix.
Diagnose what the screenshot is meant to show
A preference center can be the expected result—for example, when documenting the first-visit experience—or an unwanted overlay in a screenshot of the post-consent page. Establish which state the test is supposed to capture before changing code. A screenshot records rendered pixels; it does not establish that a choice was saved.

- If the center itself is under test, capture it and assert that it is visible.
- If the post-choice page is under test, activate the site’s real preference control, assert the intended outcome, and then capture.
- Check the viewport dimensions and whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page. A full-page image can include content outside the initial viewport.
Playwright supports page screenshots, including full-page captures, and screenshots of individual locators. Use the page for overlay placement and surrounding layout; use a locator when you need to isolate the center’s own appearance. See Playwright’s screenshot documentation.

Find the center and its actual controls
Use the rendered page’s accessible roles and names rather than guessing CSS classes from the image. A cookie center may expose a dialog, buttons, checkboxes, or switches, but its actual labels and roles depend on the site. Playwright recommends user-facing attributes and explicit contracts such as getByRole(); see the locator guide.

Inspect the accessible structure, then adapt this template to the exact dialog name and button label. It assumes the center is in the main page and that saving hides it; neither assumption is universal.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('save cookie preferences before capturing the page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.in');
const preferences = page.getByRole('dialog', {
name: /cookie preferences/i,
});
await expect(preferences).toBeVisible();
await preferences.getByRole('button', {
name: /save preferences/i,
}).click();
await expect(preferences).toBeHidden();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-preferences.png' });
});
Replace the example URL and accessible names with the site’s real values. The action may be labelled “Accept all,” “Save choices,” or something else, and some centers remain open after saving. Assert the behavior the site actually promises rather than assuming that every successful choice closes the dialog.

- 【CHECK BAKING DONENESS】 Insert the slim probe into the center of a cake, cupcake, muffin, brownie, or bread loaf, then pull it out and inspect the surface. Wet batter usually means more baking time is needed; a clean probe or a few moist crumbs may indicate doneness depending on the recipe.
- 【4.5" SLIM STAINLESS STEEL PROBE】 The stainless steel probe measures approximately 4.5", while the complete tester is about 6.1" long. Its slim profile reaches the center of baked goods while creating a smaller test point than a kitchen knife.
- 【LOOP HANDLE FOR STEADY CONTROL】 The rounded loop handle gives fingers a clear place to hold while inserting and removing the tester. Its compact shape is easy to manage during birthday cake preparation, batch baking, bread making, and everyday dessert testing.
- 【PROTECTIVE SLEEVE FOR STORAGE】 Includes one fitted transparent sleeve to cover the probe between uses. Store the protected tester in a kitchen drawer, baking-tool organizer, or utensil holder so it remains easy to find for the next recipe.
- 【REUSABLE & EASY TO CLEAN】 Rinse the probe with warm water and mild detergent after use, wipe it dry, and replace the protective sleeve before storage. Hand washing is recommended to help care for the handle and keep the tester ready for future baking.
If the center is inside an iframe
Page-level locators do not automatically cross into a frame. Identify the iframe from the rendered page and scope the locator through frameLocator():
const consentFrame = page.frameLocator('iframe[title="Privacy preferences"]');
const preferences = consentFrame.getByRole('dialog', {
name: /cookie preferences/i,
});
await expect(preferences).toBeVisible();
await preferences.getByRole('button', { name: /save preferences/i }).click();
The selector shown is only an example. Use the iframe’s real selector and controls; Playwright’s locator documentation covers frame-scoped locating.

Assert saved preferences separately from appearance
A hidden dialog or a clean-looking screenshot proves only what was rendered at capture time. It does not prove that the site stored the user’s choice or will honor it after navigation or reload. Assert the control’s resulting state using the site’s actual UI contract—for example, a selected checkbox or switch—and, where appropriate, reload and verify the resulting state again.
The storage mechanism is site-specific. Do not assume a cookie name, local-storage key, or persistence rule without inspecting the implementation or defining a supported test contract. Keep behavioral assertions distinct from image comparison so a matching baseline cannot conceal a consent-state regression.

Make visual checks repeatable
For a visual regression test, Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot waits for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing the result with the expected image. Its options can affect the comparison: animation handling, masks, clipping, full-page capture, and screenshot scale may change what is tested. See the PageAssertions documentation.

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('post-preferences.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled',
});
Choose options to match the intended test. A full-page screenshot is useful for document-wide layout, while a viewport capture is more appropriate if the bug concerns what a user sees without scrolling. If the center itself is the subject, assert and capture that locator rather than masking or hiding it. A visual assertion complements, but does not replace, the separate preference-state assertion.

Troubleshoot common failure patterns
- The dialog locator times out: Check the rendered accessible role and name, whether the center has loaded yet, and whether it is inside an iframe. Replace guessed names with the actual accessible label.
- The click runs but the center remains visible: Confirm that the selected control is the intended action. Some controls save without closing, or require a separate confirmation. Assert the site’s documented outcome instead of assuming dismissal.
- The screenshot still contains an overlay: Confirm the action completed before capture and that the test is targeting the intended page state. Check whether another banner or widget appears independently of the preference center.
- The screenshot changes between runs: Make the test state and viewport consistent, wait for the intended UI, and review screenshot options such as animations, masks, clipping, and full-page capture.
- The image looks right but consent is wrong after reload: Add an explicit assertion for the actual selected preference or resulting UI after reload. Pixel output alone cannot verify persistence.
These are diagnostic branches, not a reproduced fix for a particular Indian website. The exact locator, persistence assertion, and any browser-specific behavior require the site’s rendered DOM and failing test.
India context: what the available figure does and does not mean
ASCI’s January 2025 report Navigating Cookies describes a dipstick of 50 popular Indian websites based on a December 2024 ranking. It reports that 3 websites (6%) in that sample implemented consent banners and discusses gaps in opt-out and granular choices. That is a dated observation about that sample, not a current census of Indian sites and not a legal determination about the site in your test. A screenshot alone cannot establish whether a particular site meets its obligations.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is a clean screenshot rather than testing a consent interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. Its cleanup accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
Install the Python dependency with python -m pip install requests, set your API key, then run:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.in"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. This captures a clean image; it is not a substitute for testing whether a site saved or honored a user’s choice. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright automatically accept cookie preferences before taking a screenshot?
No. Your test must interact with the site’s controls if acceptance is the intended behavior.
Can a screenshot prove that a cookie preference was saved?
No. It shows rendered pixels, not persistence; verify the resulting preference state separately.
