Age alone has not made these five gadgets useless. Ranked by their original introduction year, the 2006 Nintendo Wii is oldest, followed by Apple’s 2007 iPod classic, Nintendo 3DS (2011), Nintendo Wii U (2012) and the first-generation Google Chromecast (2013). Their usefulness now depends on what remains after stores and online services closed: owned games, local multiplayer, offline music or phone-controlled casting.
The ranking measures launch age, not overall quality. A newer device can be more useful for a particular household, while an older one may require scarce cables, controllers or a battery replacement. The sections below separate each gadget’s surviving core function from the network features that have ended.

The ranking at a glance
| Rank by introduction year | Gadget | Introduced | What still works best | Biggest limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nintendo Wii | 2006 | Owned disc games and local multiplayer | Wii Shop Channel closed January 30, 2019 |
| 2 | Apple iPod classic | September 2007 | Offline music from locally stored files | Aging hard drive and battery |
| 3 | Nintendo 3DS family | 2011 | Offline games, local features and StreetPass | eShop purchases ended March 27, 2023; online communication ended April 8, 2024 |
| 4 | Nintendo Wii U | 2012 | Owned games, local multiplayer and Wii compatibility | eShop purchases ended March 27, 2023; online communication ended April 8, 2024 |
| 5 | First-generation Google Chromecast | 2013 | Casting supported online video and music from a phone, tablet or computer | Requires a working network, compatible apps and a TV input |
“Discontinued” covers two different events here. A manufacturer can stop making hardware while its core function remains available, as with Chromecast. A platform can also lose its storefront or online communication while the physical device remains valuable, as with the Wii, 3DS and Wii U. Check those distinctions before you sell, reset or discard an old unit.

1. Nintendo Wii (2006): the oldest device with the easiest local use
Nintendo’s Wii dates from the 2006 era; the Wii Shop Channel launched in December 2006. Its age puts it first in this list, but its main offline use is straightforward: insert an owned game disc and play on a television. The console’s motion controls also make it practical for local multiplayer when you have working Wii Remotes and a sensor bar.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What remains useful
- Physical Wii discs can be played without buying anything from the former store.
- Local multiplayer does not depend on Nintendo’s online communication service.
- The console is a simple way to use a library of games already in your home.
What ended
Nintendo says the Wii Shop Channel closed on January 30, 2019. New Wii Shop purchases are therefore unavailable. Nintendo previously allowed purchased Wii Shop titles to be redownloaded for a period, but you should not treat that historical allowance as a way to obtain new software today. If a title matters to you, verify that it is already installed and that the console can launch it before changing storage or resetting the system.
Setup and maintenance checklist
- Confirm that the television accepts the Wii’s available video connection and that the console has its power adapter.
- Pair and test every Wii Remote, then check the sensor bar position before inviting other players.
- Test each disc and save data while the console is still operating normally.
- Keep discs, controllers and memory accessories together; replacing a missing peripheral can be more difficult than finding a used console.
The Wii is the best choice here when the goal is uncomplicated, screen-based local play rather than downloadable content or online competition.
2. Apple iPod classic (2007): a focused offline music library
Apple’s model guide lists the 80 GB and 160 GB iPod classic as introduced in September 2007. It uses a mechanical hard drive, a click wheel, USB syncing and support for music, photos and video. Those deliberately limited functions are exactly why it can still be useful: there are no social feeds, notifications or streaming subscription requirements when your music is stored locally.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Why it still earns a place
- Large built-in storage can hold a personal music collection without a mobile data connection.
- The click wheel provides tactile navigation that works while walking or driving once a playlist is prepared.
- USB syncing keeps the device independent of a current app ecosystem, provided a compatible computer and local files are available.
- Photo and video playback remain secondary functions for files you have transferred yourself.
The component most likely to fail
The hard drive and battery are aging components. A unit that shows a sad-face icon, clicks repeatedly, freezes during syncing or has dramatically reduced playback time may need service rather than a software setting. A replacement battery is the clearest maintenance purchase because a depleted battery can make an otherwise functional player appear dead. Opening the enclosure carries a risk of damaging the display, ribbon cables or case, so use a repair service if you do not have the tools and experience.
Practical setup for 2026
- Connect the iPod to a computer with a known-good USB cable and see whether it is recognized before buying parts.
- Back up the music library on the computer; syncing is not a substitute for a separate backup.
- Copy a small test playlist first, then check playback, click-wheel response and headphone output.
- Use a case and avoid shocks while the hard drive is spinning.
Apple’s May 10, 2022 announcement said iPod touch would be available “while supplies last.” That announcement concerned the iPod touch line, not a revival of the hard-drive-based iPod classic. Apple also notes that the original iPod, introduced October 23, 2001, put 1,000 songs and a 10-hour battery into a 6.5-ounce device. The historical milestone explains the product family’s appeal, but the 2007 classic is the model in this ranking.
3. Nintendo 3DS family (2011): the strongest offline handheld library
The Nintendo 3DS arrived in 2011 and remains a capable handheld for software you already own. Its dual-screen design, 3D display on supported models and local features give it a role that a modern phone does not exactly duplicate.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Service changes you must understand
Nintendo ended new eShop purchases and downloads for the Nintendo 3DS family on March 27, 2023. Nintendo says owners can still redownload purchased software and updates. Online play and other online communication ended on April 8, 2024. StreetPass remains available locally because it does not require internet communication. These dates describe separate functions: a game can remain playable offline even though its online multiplayer no longer connects.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Open the system and test the battery, both screens, the touch input, cameras, buttons and game-card slot.
- Connect to a network while redownloads and updates remain available, and retrieve purchased software you may need.
- Launch every important digital title once after downloading it; do not assume a forgotten account or damaged storage will be easy to recover later.
- Use local wireless modes and StreetPass with nearby systems, but plan games around offline features rather than internet matchmaking.
Accessories and repair considerations
Hinges, circle pads, shoulder buttons and batteries receive heavy wear on used units. A carrying case protects the dual screens and is a sensible accessory for a system that travels. Replacement parts exist, but the compact design makes repairs more involved than changing a controller battery. Keep the stylus, charger and game cards with the console so a missing small part does not become the reason it sits unused.
For a household that already owns 3DS games, this is arguably the most versatile offline device in the ranking: it combines a portable library, local play and StreetPass without requiring an active storefront.

4. Nintendo Wii U (2012): useful as a local console and Wii machine
Nintendo introduced the Wii U in 2012. Its value now comes from software and accessories already in your possession, including Wii U discs, local multiplayer and backward-compatible Wii software. The GamePad can be essential for some titles, so a console without its original controller may be a poor bargain even if the main unit powers on.
End-of-service dates
Wii U eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023, and online communication ended on April 8, 2024. Nintendo says offline game modes remain usable and previously purchased software and downloadable content can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. “Foreseeable future” is not a guaranteed permanent archive, so redownload essential purchases while the service permits it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuying or keeping one safely
- Check that the GamePad charges, holds a connection and responds to touch input.
- Test the console’s disc drive with both Wii U and Wii discs if backward compatibility matters to you.
- Verify the sensor bar and Wii Remotes for Wii software and local multiplayer.
- Download owned software and updates before relying on the console for a trip or event.
- Keep the GamePad charging cable, stand and any proprietary accessories together.
The Wii U is a better fit than the Wii when your collection includes both generations of discs or games designed around the second screen. It is a weaker fit if you expect current online communities, new digital purchases or a replacement GamePad to be easy to source.

5. First-generation Google Chromecast (2013): still convenient when casting is the point
Google released the first Chromecast in 2013. Google says Chromecast production ended after 11 years and more than 100 million devices were sold. Ending production does not remove its original purpose: casting online content from a phone, tablet or computer to a television. Google says support for existing devices continues under its support policy.
Where it still helps
- A television without built-in casting can gain phone-controlled playback through an available HDMI input.
- Guests can choose content from their own phones instead of navigating a television remote.
- The small dongle is useful for a spare room or travel setup when the network and TV meet its requirements.
Dependencies that can break the experience
Chromecast is not an offline media player. It needs a compatible TV input, power, a working Wi-Fi network and an app or service that still supports casting. A phone can act as the remote while the Chromecast receives the stream, so poor wireless coverage or a changed account can matter more than the age of the dongle. Existing-device support is governed by Google’s support policy; individual streaming apps can also change their own compatibility.
Basic setup and troubleshooting
- Plug the Chromecast into HDMI and provide power using its intended adapter or a reliably powered USB port.
- Switch the television to the correct HDMI input and connect the controlling phone, tablet or computer to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open a casting-compatible app, select the cast control and choose the Chromecast.
- If it does not appear, restart the Chromecast and router, confirm both devices use the same network, and check that the app is current.
- Reset only as a last resort; a reset erases its network configuration and requires setup again.
Chromecast ranks fifth because it is the newest device here, not because it is automatically the best. It remains a sensible solution when your television lacks convenient casting and your household already uses supported services.

How to choose among them
Choose by the function you need
| Your priority | Most suitable gadget | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Offline music with no notifications | iPod classic | Local files, click-wheel control and built-in storage |
| Motion games for a group | Nintendo Wii | Disc-based library and local multiplayer |
| Portable Nintendo games | Nintendo 3DS | Dual-screen handheld play, local features and StreetPass |
| Wii and Wii U libraries in one console | Nintendo Wii U | Backward-compatible Wii software plus Wii U games |
| Phone-controlled TV playback | Chromecast | Casting from supported apps to an HDMI television |
Check these four constraints before spending money
- Service dependence: the Wii, 3DS and Wii U have lost important storefront or online functions; Chromecast still depends on network and app support.
- Included hardware: Wii Remotes, sensor bars, a Wii U GamePad, a 3DS charger or an iPod cable can determine whether a cheap listing is actually usable.
- Storage and ownership: digital purchases should be redownloaded while Nintendo allows it, while physical discs and locally stored music avoid storefront dependence.
- Repair risk: an iPod’s battery and hard drive are aging; handheld hinges, buttons and screens can also require specialist work.
What “discontinued” should mean to your decision
None of these products should be bought on the assumption that every original feature will return. The Wii Shop Channel will not become a new marketplace, 3DS and Wii U online communication will not restore their former matchmaking, and a Chromecast cannot cast from an app that no longer supports it. Their durable value is narrower and more concrete: software and media you already own, local interactions, or a simple hardware function that remains supported.
Before paying a collector’s price, test the exact unit and list the accessories it includes. For a Wii or Wii U, confirm the console reads a disc and that the controllers work. For a 3DS, inspect both screens and the hinge. For an iPod classic, test syncing and battery behavior. For Chromecast, verify HDMI, power, Wi-Fi and the casting app you actually use. That short inspection prevents most disappointments with discontinued technology.
The Bottom Line
The oldest option, Nintendo’s 2006 Wii, is still excellent for owned discs and local play; the iPod classic is the best dedicated offline music player; the 3DS offers the deepest portable offline use; Wii U preserves Wii and Wii U libraries; and Chromecast remains useful only when current casting support and a suitable network are in place.
