Yes—some current flagship phones can match or exceed the processor and graphics performance of laptops that are several years old, but only for particular workloads. The clearest current examples are the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, OnePlus 15, vivo X300 Pro and OPPO Find X9 Pro. The iPhone leads the cited single-core result, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra records the strongest cited multicore and 3DMark scores. Whether any of them is “more powerful” than your laptop depends on its exact processor, cooling system, operating system and the applications you run.
What “more powerful than an old laptop” actually means
A phone and a laptop do not have one universal power rating. A laptop bought three to six years ago might have a high-wattage Core or Ryzen processor, an entry-level discrete GPU, 8 GB of memory and active fans. Another might use a low-power ultrabook chip and integrated graphics. A flagship phone can beat the second machine in a short CPU test yet lose badly during a 30-minute render because the laptop can sustain higher power draw and has more cooling capacity.

For a useful comparison, separate performance into four measurements:
- Single-core CPU: short, interactive work such as opening apps, running many everyday scripts and responding to user input.
- Multicore CPU: compiling code, exporting media, compressing files and other tasks that can use many cores at once.
- GPU throughput: 3D games, visual effects and compute workloads. The cited figures here use 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited.
- Sustained performance: what remains after heat builds up. A phone may score brilliantly for a few minutes and then reduce clock speeds to stay within its thermal limits.
The figures below are synthetic benchmarks, not a promise that every application will run faster on a phone. They are best used to establish a realistic range and to identify which devices deserve closer testing against your particular laptop.

Geekbench’s mobile and Android indexes are live databases, so rankings and scores can change as new submissions arrive. Any published comparison should identify the benchmark version and the date it was accessed. Chipset names alone are not enough: cooling design, firmware, memory configuration and regional model differences can change the result.
1. iPhone 17 Pro Max: the strongest single-core and ecosystem-led choice
The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses Apple’s A19 Pro platform. In Tom’s Guide’s 2025 Geekbench 6 measurement, it scored 3,871 in single-core and 9,968 in multicore. That single-core result is higher than the 3,785 recorded for the Galaxy S26 Ultra in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison, making the iPhone the more compelling candidate for quick, bursty interactions in the cited data.
Its 2026 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited result was 5,855 at 35.03 frames per second. That is a strong mobile graphics result, although it trails the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s cited score. Synthetic graphics scores also do not account for game settings, API support, display resolution or how long the phone can hold peak clocks.

Why choose it over an older laptop?
- Short tasks feel immediate, and many apps are optimized specifically for Apple silicon.
- Apple controls the processor, operating system and update pipeline, reducing variation between software and hardware.
- It is a sensible choice when your priority is responsive everyday use, camera or video workflows supported by iOS apps, and long-term platform consistency.
Where the laptop still wins
A laptop remains more practical for desktop software that has no full iOS equivalent, sustained exports, large file management and workflows requiring several windows, a physical keyboard or multiple ports. The phone’s benchmark lead does not remove those usability limits.

2. Galaxy S26 Ultra: the best cited multicore and graphics result
The Galaxy S26 Ultra uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variant designated “for Galaxy.” Tom’s Guide measured 3,785 single-core and 11,563 multicore in Geekbench 6 in 2026. Its multicore score is the highest phone result cited here. In the same year’s 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited test, it achieved 6,645 and 39.8 frames per second, also the strongest direct graphics result in this shortlist.
Those results make the S26 Ultra the clearest candidate for readers who care about parallel workloads and mobile gaming. The comparison is still not a universal laptop replacement: a laptop with a modern high-wattage CPU or discrete graphics card can remain faster, especially after several minutes of continuous work.
What the Snapdragon result does and does not prove
A separate Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 reference device recorded 3,832 single-core and 12,208 multicore in Tom’s Guide’s 2025 Geekbench 6 testing. That is a reference design, not the retail Galaxy S26 Ultra, so it demonstrates the platform’s potential rather than a guaranteed score for every phone using the chip. Qualcomm describes the platform as “a masterpiece of performance, delivering state-of-the-art experiences and personalized Agentic AI.” That is vendor positioning, not independent testing.

The OnePlus 15 is another Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 flagship and appears in Geekbench’s current Android rankings. The available evidence identifies its platform and its presence in the live index, but does not establish a single device-specific Geekbench or 3DMark number in this comparison. It should therefore be treated as a credible high-performance option, not assigned the reference device’s score.

For a buyer, the important question is how the particular regional model handles heat and power. Two phones with the same Snapdragon designation can diverge under a long game or export if one has a larger vapor chamber, a different performance mode or more aggressive thermal management. Check sustained testing for the exact model you can buy, rather than inferring it from the chipset name.
Who should consider it?
Choose the OnePlus 15 when you want Android flexibility, a performance-oriented design and access to demanding games or multitasking without moving to Apple’s ecosystem. Verify local software support, warranty terms and network compatibility before ordering because availability varies by country.
4. vivo X300 Pro: Dimensity 9500 power with device-level questions
The vivo X300 Pro uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 and is listed in Geekbench’s current Android rankings. No device-specific score is stated in the supplied benchmark evidence, so there is no defensible number to place beside the iPhone and Galaxy results. Its inclusion reflects a current flagship platform that belongs in a serious performance comparison, not proof that it beats a particular laptop.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For gaming and multicore work, assess the retail phone’s memory configuration, storage speed, cooling and sustained frame rate. Short benchmark bursts can look excellent while a long session triggers thermal throttling. Also check whether the exact model and software version are sold in your region; flagship names can cover different configurations across markets.

5. OPPO Find X9 Pro: another Dimensity 9500 flagship
The OPPO Find X9 Pro is the second Dimensity 9500 phone on the shortlist and also appears in Geekbench’s live Android rankings. As with the vivo, a device-level benchmark number was not established here. It is appropriate to compare its exact retail configuration, firmware and cooling behavior, but not to claim a precise ranking from the chipset alone.
It is a logical candidate for readers who want a top-tier Android phone for demanding apps, games and multitasking. Before buying, confirm regional availability and the support period offered for your market. Those practical factors can matter more than a small synthetic-score difference.
How these phones compare with your own laptop
Start by identifying the laptop’s exact processor model, graphics hardware, memory and operating system. “Bought a few years ago” is not a technical baseline. A 2021 ultrabook and a 2021 gaming laptop can differ by several times in sustained graphics performance.
- Record the laptop hardware. Note the CPU model, number of performance and efficiency cores where applicable, GPU model, RAM capacity and whether the machine is plugged in during heavy work.
- Define the workload. Separate quick app launches from long video exports, code compilation, 3D games and file compression. A phone may lead in one category and lose in another.
- Match benchmark versions. Use the same Geekbench 6 release and the same 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited test where possible. Record the date because live databases change.
- Control conditions. Test both devices from a cool start, with similar battery or power conditions, updated software and no competing background jobs.
- Repeat sustained tests. Run a loop for at least 20 to 30 minutes and record the final result, temperature behavior and frame-rate stability. The peak score alone is not a sustained-performance result.
- Check real applications. Time the tasks you actually perform, such as exporting a project, building a codebase or loading a game level. App availability and file-transfer friction can outweigh a benchmark advantage.
Can a smartphone replace a laptop?
For communications, photography, streaming, navigation, short edits, cloud work and many games, a flagship phone can replace an older laptop in speed and convenience. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra demonstrate how far mobile CPU and GPU throughput has advanced.

Replacement becomes less realistic when you need desktop-class software, a full keyboard, a large local file library, multiple external displays, many ports, virtual machines or hours of uninterrupted maximum performance. Phones also use mobile operating systems with different multitasking, storage-access and peripheral rules. A fast processor cannot supply a desktop application that does not exist for the platform.
What can make a slower-looking phone the better choice?
- Sustained thermals: a slightly lower peak score may deliver higher results after a long workload.
- Software support: update policy, app quality and compatibility can matter more than a few hundred benchmark points.
- Battery and charging: heavy gaming or exports can drain a phone quickly; charging behavior and heat affect usability.
- Memory and storage: multitasking and large projects depend on RAM capacity and storage speed, not just the SoC.
- Accessories: desktop modes, docks, keyboards and external-display support vary by model and region.
- Availability: the exact model, warranty and network bands may not be offered in your country.
What the benchmark numbers say—and what they do not
The cited results establish a useful hierarchy for selected tests: the iPhone 17 Pro Max has the highest single-core score among the two retail phones directly compared; the Galaxy S26 Ultra has the higher cited multicore and 3DMark results; and the Snapdragon reference device shows that platform can score higher still under its own test conditions. They do not establish that every listed phone beats every laptop, nor do they provide current retail prices or stock information.
Use the five models as a shortlist for a controlled comparison against your machine. Choose the iPhone for the strongest cited single-core result and ecosystem consistency, the Galaxy for the strongest cited multicore and graphics performance, and the OnePlus 15, vivo X300 Pro or OPPO Find X9 Pro when their Android features, regional support and sustained testing fit your needs.
