What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—Firsty Free is genuinely free, but it is best treated as emergency connectivity rather than a full travel-data replacement. You watch short advertisements to earn small data allowances, the connection is capped at 1 Mbps, and availability depends on your destination, phone-number country and eSIM-compatible hardware. That is enough for WhatsApp messages, email, maps and occasional essential browsing. It is a poor fit for streaming, large downloads, dependable hotspot use or trips where you cannot risk a coverage surprise.
Is Firsty Free really free?
Firsty Free has no advertised purchase price. Its business model is advertising: each short ad unlocks a small block of mobile data. You do not enter a card number to earn the free allowance, but you do pay with viewing time and with a much lower speed ceiling than a normal travel eSIM.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The free tier is also conditional. Firsty checks whether your phone-number country, current location and device are eligible. An eSIM-capable phone is required, and a country can have Firsty’s paid service without supporting Free. The app is therefore the final authority for your route; a country count on a marketing page is not a guarantee that your particular line will activate there.
Firsty announced a three-plan global setup and said users without an active plan would be migrated on 6 July 2026. If you installed Firsty before that date, open the current app and confirm which plan is shown before relying on it for a journey.

What Firsty Free includes
Firsty’s official Free plan page states that one short advertisement unlocks 20 MB at speeds of up to 1 Mbps. The in-app balance can hold up to 240 MB, while the Help Center sets an upper limit of 18 advertisements, or 360 MB, per day. Firsty says earned data remains valid for seven days.
| Free-plan detail | What Firsty states | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| How data is earned | One short ad unlocks 20 MB | You must return to the app and watch ads as you need more data. |
| Speed | Up to 1 Mbps | Suitable for text, maps, email and light pages; slow for media and downloads. |
| Balance capacity | Up to 240 MB stored | Unused earned data cannot build an unlimited reserve. |
| Daily earning limit | 18 ads, or 360 MB per day | The Help Center says this limit cannot be increased. |
| Validity | Seven days for earned data | Do not expect a balance earned this week to remain available indefinitely. |
The 240 MB balance limit and 360 MB daily earning ceiling describe different controls: the first limits how much can sit in your account, while the second limits how much you can earn during one day. If you have already filled the balance, watching more ads will not create a larger stored reserve.
How usable is a 1 Mbps connection?
A one-megabit-per-second cap is workable for low-bandwidth tasks but leaves little headroom for modern media-heavy sites. Text messages and compact email sync should be comfortable. Map tiles can load, although you may need to wait when panning or opening a detailed area. Light web pages work best with images and automatic video disabled.

- WhatsApp and other messaging: Text, location sharing and small attachments are realistic. Voice or video calls consume the allowance quickly and may become unreliable.
- Maps: Turn-by-turn directions and occasional map refreshes are plausible. Download an offline map on Wi-Fi before departure so navigation does not depend entirely on the mobile connection.
- Email: Reading and sending text mail is suitable; large attachments should wait for Wi-Fi.
- Web browsing: News, timetables and travel forms are possible if you avoid auto-playing media.
- Streaming: Sustained video, music at high quality and social feeds full of video are poor matches for the cap and the small daily allowance.
- Downloads and updates: App updates, operating-system downloads, cloud-photo sync and large documents should be blocked until Wi-Fi.
Actual responsiveness also depends on the local partner network and congestion. The 1 Mbps figure is a plan ceiling, not a promise that every tower will deliver that rate at all times.
Where does Firsty Free work?
Firsty’s current pages do not agree on one stable country total. The dedicated Free page lists 171 countries. The main site describes Free in 168 countries and the overall Firsty service in 176 countries. A September 2026 TechRadar comparison tested a 74-country Free footprint and warned that substantial parts of Asia and the Americas may be excluded.

| Published source | Free coverage figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Firsty Free plan page (2026) | 171 countries | Marketing-page total; country availability can change. |
| Firsty main site (2026) | 168 countries for Free; 176 for the wider service | Shows that paid and free footprints are not identical. |
| TechRadar comparison (September 2026) | 74-country footprint tested | Independent test coverage was narrower and flagged gaps in Asia and the Americas. |
These figures are not interchangeable measurements. They may reflect different dates, definitions or test routes. Check the exact destination in Firsty’s app immediately before departure, then check again after any major app update. Do not infer that a neighboring country is covered because one country in the region appears in a list.
Firsty’s Help Center gives Panama and Laos as examples of destinations with paid coverage but no Firsty Free access. If your itinerary includes a stopover, border crossing or cruise port, verify every country rather than checking only the place where you spend the most nights.

Firsty says eligibility is determined automatically from three inputs:
- Phone-number country: The country associated with your mobile number can affect whether Free is offered.
- Current location: The service checks where you are when you attempt to activate or use it.
- Device support: Your phone must contain an eSIM and support the required carrier profile.
The app-store listing names recent iPhone, Samsung, Pixel and other Android eSIM devices as supported. TechRadar reported that Firsty’s published device list lagged newer phone releases, so a phone that technically supports eSIM should still be checked in the app. Imported regional variants can also differ from the model name sold in your home market.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- Check the hardware. Confirm that your exact phone model has an eSIM option in its cellular settings and is not carrier-locked.
- Install the current Firsty app. Use your phone’s official app store and sign in with the phone number you intend to use.
- Review destination eligibility. Search each country on your itinerary in the app. Treat the result shown for your account as more useful than a general country count.
- Add the eSIM while on Wi-Fi. Follow the in-app installation flow. Keep your physical SIM active for calls or SMS if you need it, but label the Firsty line clearly.
- Set the data line. In iPhone, Samsung or Android cellular settings, choose Firsty for mobile data. Leave data roaming enabled for the Firsty line if the app instructs you to do so; roaming on the wrong line can create charges from your home carrier.
- Disable unwanted background use. Turn off automatic updates, photo backup and high-quality media downloads on the Firsty line.
- Test activation at home. The plan may not pass traffic until you reach an eligible country, but you should be able to see the installed profile and account status before departure.
- At arrival, select Firsty and restart mobile data. Give the phone a minute to register on a partner network, then open the app and claim the first data block.
Keep the app installed: it is where you watch ads, see the remaining balance and check whether the current country is eligible. If you delete the eSIM profile, reinstalling it abroad may require Wi-Fi and may not be possible on every phone.

How to stretch the free allowance
Prepare offline content
Download maps, boarding passes, translation packs, hotel details and entertainment before leaving Wi-Fi. This turns Firsty into a backup for changes and emergencies instead of a primary connection.
Stop background consumption
On iPhone, review Settings > Cellular and disable mobile data for photo backup, video apps and other heavy users. On Android, use the SIM or network settings to restrict background data and enable Data Saver. Check cloud-drive and podcast apps separately; they can consume a 20 MB block without an obvious foreground download.
Claim data when you need it
Because each ad grants a small block and earned data expires after seven days, avoid filling the balance days before a trip unless you expect to use it. The daily ad ceiling cannot be expanded, so do not assume you can watch extra ads after a navigation-heavy day.
Can Firsty Free be used as a hotspot?
Firsty’s Help Center says people who want the highest speeds or hotspot may need Classic or Unlimited. That is a warning against treating Free as a dependable tethering plan, not a guarantee that every phone will show or block the hotspot switch.

Even when tethering appears to work, a laptop can exhaust a small allowance through system updates, browser prefetching or cloud synchronization. For occasional emergency use, pause automatic updates, set the computer’s connection as metered and disconnect as soon as the task is complete. For regular work, video calls or sharing with several devices, choose a paid plan or a separate travel eSIM with a stated hotspot policy.
Firsty’s paid upgrades
Paid plans remove the central limitations of Free. Firsty’s current pricing pages describe Classic from €0.98 per GB and Unlimited from €2 per day. These are starting prices shown by Firsty; the amount available to you can depend on destination, currency, taxes or an in-app offer.
| Plan | Price stated by Firsty | Speed and allowance | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | No purchase price; ad-supported | 20 MB per ad, up to 1 Mbps; balance up to 240 MB; maximum 360 MB earned per day | Backup messaging, maps, email and essential access |
| Classic | From €0.98 per GB | Ads removed; Firsty says it provides the highest available speed | People who need predictable high-speed data without a daily pass |
| Unlimited | From €2 per day | 5 GB at high speed, then 512 Kbps until the next day or a top-up | Heavy daily use, faster navigation, media and more practical tethering |
“Unlimited” is therefore not unlimited full-speed data. Once the 5 GB high-speed allowance is used, the line continues at 512 Kbps until the next day or until you top up. That reduced speed can still support basic messaging, but it is not equivalent to the initial high-speed portion.

Choose Free when all of these are true
- Your destination is confirmed as Free-eligible in the app.
- You mainly need text messaging, light email, maps or a one-off travel form.
- You can watch advertisements and tolerate a speed-capped connection.
- You have Wi-Fi available for downloads, calls, media and backups.
- You have another option if the local network or coverage fails.
Choose Classic when speed matters more than a daily bundle
Classic is the straightforward upgrade for browsing, navigation with richer map data and ordinary app use when you do not want to watch ads. Its advertised entry price is per gigabyte, so compare the amount you expect to consume with a daily plan before buying.

Firsty Free versus other travel eSIMs
Airalo, Nomad and Ubigi are reasonable alternatives to compare when your route is outside Firsty Free’s verified footprint or you need a larger high-speed allowance. Their exact prices, country lists and hotspot rules vary by destination and change over time, so compare the offer for your specific country rather than relying on a global headline.
| Decision point | Firsty Free | Paid travel-eSIM alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | No purchase price, but ads are required | Usually a paid package; destination pricing not stated here |
| Speed | Capped at 1 Mbps | Varies by provider and local network; check the plan details |
| Data volume | Small ad-earned blocks with a daily ceiling | Often sold as a larger fixed allowance or day pass; exact amounts vary |
| Coverage choice | Free footprint must be verified in the Firsty app | Compare each provider’s country and regional package maps |
| Hotspot | Firsty directs users seeking hotspot toward paid plans | Read the provider’s tethering terms before purchase |
| Best reason to choose it | Zero purchase cost for basic backup access | More predictable speed, volume or destination coverage |
Common problems and fixes
The app says Free is unavailable
Recheck the country, your phone-number country and the exact device model. A destination may have Firsty paid coverage but not Free. If you are using a newly released or imported phone, compare the app result with the manufacturer’s eSIM support and try the current app version.
The eSIM is installed but there is no data
- Make Firsty the selected mobile-data line.
- Enable data roaming for that line if Firsty’s setup instructions require it.
- Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and restart mobile data or the phone.
- Check that you are physically in an eligible country and that the account has an unexpired data block.
- Do not enable roaming on your home SIM unless your carrier’s terms make that intentional.
The connection is much slower than expected
Free has a 1 Mbps ceiling, and local congestion can reduce performance further. Move outdoors or to a location with better signal, close background apps and reserve the line for text and maps. Upgrading to Classic or Unlimited is the practical fix when the plan ceiling, rather than signal, is the bottleneck.
Ads do not add data
Confirm that you have not reached the 18-ad daily limit or the 240 MB stored-balance capacity. Check the app’s account status, maintain a stable connection while the ad completes and reopen the app afterward. The Help Center says the daily limit cannot be increased.
The phone cannot share the connection
Hotspot availability can depend on the plan, device and local network. Firsty specifically points users seeking hotspot or the highest speeds to Classic or Unlimited. If tethering is essential, buy the upgrade before you need to work and test it while you still have a fallback connection.
Advantages and disadvantages at a glance
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| No purchase price for eligible users | Ads are required to earn data |
| Useful emergency access for messaging, maps and email | 1 Mbps speed cap limits media and downloads |
| Seven-day validity gives some flexibility after earning data | Small blocks and a 360 MB daily earning ceiling require rationing |
| Can be installed as a backup eSIM alongside a physical SIM | Coverage figures differ between current pages |
| Simple paid path to Classic or Unlimited | Eligibility depends on number country, location and device |
Final verdict: is Firsty Free worth it?
Firsty Free is worth installing when you want a no-cost fallback and your destination appears as eligible in the app. It can get a traveler through a delayed flight, a map lookup, a text conversation or an email without committing to a paid package. Install it at home, download essentials over Wi-Fi and treat the ad-earned balance as a reserve.
It is not a dependable replacement for a normal travel-data plan. The advertising requirement, low speed ceiling, modest daily limit and uncertain country footprint make it unsuitable for sustained streaming, large downloads, routine laptop work or an itinerary where connectivity is mission-critical. In those cases, Classic, Unlimited or a paid alternative such as Airalo, Nomad or Ubigi is the safer choice after checking the exact destination and hotspot terms.
