Choose a first-person Soulslike if you want to explore from inside the character’s viewpoint, with the environment filling your view. Choose third-person if you want to see your character alongside nearby enemies and follow positioning from outside the character. Neither perspective is inherently better or harder: the right fit depends on which view and combat cues you enjoy, and each game implements them differently.
What changes when the camera changes?
Perspective shapes what you see and how you read a space. In first-person, you look out from the character, so the surroundings take up the view and exploration can feel close and immediate. In third-person, the character remains visible in the scene, giving you another visual reference as you move and fight.

These are practical preferences, not measured outcomes or universal rules. A first-person camera does not guarantee deeper immersion, and a third-person camera does not automatically make combat easier. Controls, enemy behavior, level design, and camera implementation vary by game.

What first-person Soulslike play can offer
First-person dungeon exploration has a history in FromSoftware’s own catalog. The studio describes King’s Field as a first-person 3D RPG set in the underground tomb of Verdite, where players explore, fight with sword and magic, and move through a dark fantasy world. It is a useful historical reference for first-person action-RPG exploration.

A modern adjacent example is Lunacid. Its Steam listing calls it a dark fantasy dungeon crawler inspired by Shadow Tower and King’s Field, and tags it as both a first-person RPG and a Souls-like. That makes it a relevant example of the lineage, not evidence that it reproduces every feature of third-person FromSoftware Soulslikes.
If you gravitate toward first-person, consider whether you enjoy navigating and investigating a world from within the character’s view, as well as handling combat in that same view. Check how the particular game presents attacks, movement, and exploration rather than assuming every first-person title works alike.

What third-person Soulslike play can offer
Third-person play keeps your character in view, which can help you follow their position relative to an enemy or the surrounding space. It also makes camera management part of the experience. Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring page describes combat in terms of reading enemy intentions and using well-timed dodges or parries. Its starter guide includes camera reset and lock-on controls.
Those details make Elden Ring a useful third-person reference: watching enemy movement, managing distance, and choosing when to dodge or parry are explicit parts of its combat guidance. They do not establish that every third-person Soulslike uses the same controls or gives the same view.

How much does perspective tell you about the game?
Less than the label might suggest. Camera perspective helps describe how you experience the space, but it does not tell you how punishing a game is, how its progression works, or whether its combat will suit you. Even the genre’s structure varies. In a publisher discussion of the Souls series, Bandai Namco characterizes many paths as branching routes connected by hubs, with bosses acting as progression gates. That is commentary about the series, not a definition that every Soulslike must follow.

A quick way to choose
- Decide what you want to see. Pick first-person if you want the environment to fill the view; pick third-person if seeing your character in the scene matters to you.
- Think about combat cues. Consider whether you prefer responding from within the character’s view or watching character and enemy movement together.
- Check the individual game. Look for how it handles camera movement, lock-on or targeting, attacks, and exploration. The perspective label does not specify those details.
- Choose by experience, not presumed difficulty. If both viewpoints appeal to you, let the game’s other features decide; the camera by itself is not a reliable difficulty or quality signal.
