Pair the new earbuds, then check the controls and preferences you want to keep.
Do AirPods settings transfer to a new pair?
Apple advises setting newly purchased AirPods up as new. When they are connected to an iPhone signed in to iCloud, they can be set up automatically with supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That account-based setup is not a promise that customized controls from your previous earbuds will be copied.

After connecting AirPods Pro 3, open their settings on your iPhone or iPad and review the options you use. Apple’s settings guide covers configurable options such as stem actions, microphone selection and Automatic Ear Detection. Set the preferences you want on the new pair. Apple’s AirPods settings guide describes these controls.
How to connect AirPods Pro 3 to an iPhone
Apple’s current connection instructions require iOS 26 or later for this setup. Make sure the iPhone is updated, then pair the earbuds through the nearby-case prompt:

- Place both AirPods in their case and open the lid.
- Hold the open case near your unlocked iPhone.
- When the setup animation appears, tap Connect and follow the prompts.
- Tap Done when setup finishes.
If you are signed in to iCloud with your Apple Account, Apple says the AirPods are set up automatically with supported devices signed in to that same account. Apple also says AirPods can be associated with one Apple Account for features including automatic device switching and Find My. See Apple’s connection instructions.
How to pair AirPods Pro 3 manually
If the setup animation does not appear, use the Pro 3 case’s manual pairing gesture. With the AirPods in the case and the lid open, double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. Then go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone and select the AirPods when they appear.

AirPods Pro 3 use a front-of-case double-tap for manual pairing; do not follow instructions for older models that tell you to hold a setup button on the back. Apple’s model-specific steps are on its connection instructions page.
Why won’t AirPods switch between my Apple devices?
Automatic switching requires supported devices to be up to date and signed in to the same Apple Account, with two-factor authentication enabled. If those conditions are not met, switching may not work as expected.

If you prefer to prevent a device from switching automatically, change its connection preference on that device: open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button next to your AirPods, then choose Connect to This iPhone or Connect to This iPad and select the preferred option. If you see an alert that Find My setup is incomplete, allow time for pairing to finish, check that the iPhone or iPad is running current software, and confirm that Find My iPhone, Find My network and Bluetooth are enabled.

If the AirPods were previously used by another person, they must be removed from that person’s Apple Account before they can be associated with yours. Follow Apple’s Find My setup guidance and its connection instructions for these cases.

If the fit or sound seems wrong after pairing
Fit is separate from account setup and Bluetooth pairing, but a poor seal can affect how the AirPods sound. On a connected iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 26 or later, use the Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 from Settings. Adjust the earbuds and test again; if the seal is still poor, try another included tip size. Apple notes that different ears may need different sizes. Its AirPods fit guidance covers the test.
