If Firefox will not open HTTPS websites, start by noting the exact error and checking whether the problem affects one site or many. Then verify your device’s date and time, compare the affected site in another browser, and use the error code to distinguish a website certificate problem from Firefox, security software, or network interference. Don’t disable certificate protections just to force a page to load.
First, find out what is failing
Write down the full Firefox error message and any code shown on the warning page. Then test a second HTTPS site and try the affected site in another browser. These checks help narrow down where to look:

- Only one site fails: Its certificate or server configuration may be at fault, especially if the same site fails in another browser.
- Several HTTPS sites fail only in Firefox: Check Firefox’s connection settings and any software that may inspect or redirect secure traffic.
- Sites fail in every browser: Investigate the device’s connection, security software, DNS, Wi-Fi, or network provider.
Mozilla’s secure-connection troubleshooting guide explains that Firefox can stop a page when certificate validation fails, a connection is interfered with, or the site has a problem.
Check your device’s clock
Confirm that the date, time, and time zone on your computer or device are correct. Firefox checks whether a site’s certificate is currently valid; an incorrect clock can make a valid certificate appear expired or not yet valid. Mozilla describes this issue in its guide to time-related errors on secure websites.

If the clock is correct and just one site still produces a certificate warning, the site may have an expired certificate or a configuration problem. The site’s owner or administrator must correct that; changing a setting in Firefox cannot renew the site’s certificate.
Use the error code to narrow down certificate problems

SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUERorMOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_MITM_DETECTEDon several unrelated secure sites can indicate that a certificate authority is not trusted or that something is intercepting HTTPS traffic.- The same warning on one site alone can point to that site’s certificate setup, such as a missing intermediate certificate or a self-signed certificate.
Antivirus HTTPS inspection, a corporate network, a proxy, or another security appliance can replace a site’s certificate with one it presents locally. Mozilla’s secure-website error-code reference provides additional detail. On a work or school device, contact the network administrator rather than installing certificates or changing managed policies yourself.

VPNs and antivirus inspection
If the problem began after installing or updating a VPN or antivirus program, check that software’s updates and settings for HTTPS or encrypted-traffic scanning. You can temporarily disconnect from a VPN to see whether it is involved, but restore it after the test. Treat this as a diagnostic check, not a reason to leave protection switched off.

Proxy configuration
A proxy can affect how Firefox reaches websites. If the device recently changed networks or a proxy was configured, review Firefox’s connection settings and confirm they match the network you are using. Mozilla’s secure-connection guide covers proxy and other connection-related checks.
DNS over HTTPS
DNS over HTTPS (DoH) changes how Firefox looks up website addresses. If evidence points to a DNS issue, Mozilla suggests temporarily disabling DoH or adding the affected site to its exceptions. The behavior depends on the selected protection level: Default Protection can fall back to system DNS and respond to network policies, while stricter settings may keep using the chosen secure resolver or show a warning if it cannot be reached. Recognize problems the website owner must fix
The code SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION means the site is using an outdated TLS version. Mozilla documents TLS 1.2 as Firefox’s default minimum. Firefox cannot make an outdated server configuration secure; the website owner needs to support a current secure TLS version. As Mozilla Support puts it, “Firefox protects you by preventing navigation to such sites,” in its secure-connection troubleshooting article.

Do not bypass a security warning as a routine fix
Firefox may not offer a way to proceed when a site uses HSTS, a certificate error is critical, or an organization’s policy disables bypasses. Even when Firefox does offer an override, using it can expose you to an unsafe connection. Do not click through warnings simply to regain access, and do not install an unknown root certificate. Resolve the clock, network, software, or server problem instead; Mozilla explains certificate-warning behavior in its connection security warning guide.
