Samsung Galaxy: How to Save Videos to an SD Card

First check whether your Galaxy phone or tablet has a microSD card slot: not every model does. If it does, use My Files to copy or move videos already on the device. For new Camera recordings, choose the SD card as the save location if your model and recording mode support it.

Check whether your Galaxy supports a microSD card

Galaxy phones and tablets do not all have a microSD slot. Check the specifications for your exact model before buying a card or searching for a storage setting. Samsung’s compatibility and card guidance is available in its microSD support article.

For high-resolution video recording, Samsung recommends a microSDXC card, but that is not a universal capacity or speed specification for every Galaxy. Confirm your model’s supported card capacity and recording requirements before choosing one.

How do I save existing videos to an SD card on my Samsung Galaxy?

Use My Files to copy or move a video that is already stored on your phone or tablet. The SD card destination appears when a card is inserted. Samsung’s My Files instructions describe this workflow.

  1. Insert a compatible microSD card.
  2. Open My Files and locate the video. Depending on where it is stored, check categories such as Videos or the folder where you saved it.
  3. Touch and hold the video to select it. Select additional videos if needed.
  4. Tap Move to transfer the selected files, or Copy to leave the originals where they are.
  5. Return to the My Files home screen, then choose SD card.
  6. Open the destination folder, or create one if you want to organize the files.
  7. Tap Move here or Copy here, as applicable.

Moving a file relocates it off internal storage; copying creates another version on the card and retains the original. Use My Files for the transfer rather than trying to move a video between apps such as Gallery. Samsung’s file-management guidance also explains the distinction between copying and moving.

Set the Camera to save future recordings to the card

On compatible models, open the Camera app, go to its settings, and look for Storage location or similarly worded storage options. Select the SD card. Menu names and availability vary by model and software version; Samsung’s instructions for the setting were updated on February 4, 2026, and describe the behavior on supported models: set the Galaxy camera save location.

Selecting the card does not mean every capture mode will save there. Samsung lists 8K video, UHD video at 60 fps, GIF, burst, and RAW capture as cases that may save to internal storage instead. If one of those files is stored internally, use My Files to move or copy it to the card afterward.

What to check if the SD card option is missing

  • No SD card destination in My Files: Confirm that the device has a microSD slot and that a compatible card is inserted. The destination appears only when a card is present.
  • No Camera storage-location setting: The model or software version may not offer the option. Samsung notes that availability and labels differ across devices.
  • A recording went to internal storage: Check whether it was captured in 8K, UHD at 60 fps, GIF, burst, or RAW mode, then transfer it with My Files if needed.
  • Considering formatting the card as internal storage: Samsung Android does not support Adoptable storage, so formatting the card as internal memory will not make apps treat it as built-in storage.

Samsung’s microSD guidance covers compatibility and this Adoptable storage limitation. Confirm card specifications for the exact Galaxy model rather than assuming one capacity or speed works across the range.
