If Firefox stays open but stops responding on Windows 11, start with the action that triggers the freeze, then use Firefox Troubleshoot Mode to test whether extensions, the theme, or hardware acceleration are involved. Move to profile repair or reinstall only after those lower-risk checks. If Firefox closes unexpectedly, that is a crash rather than a hang and calls for crash troubleshooting.
First, identify what is freezing
Note whether the problem happens during one specific action, such as copying text, or at random. Also check whether only Firefox becomes unresponsive or Windows and other apps do too. That distinction helps you decide whether to focus on the browser or investigate a wider system problem; a Firefox freeze alone does not establish a Windows fault.

If Firefox freezes while copying
Mozilla lists a Windows 11 issue in which Firefox can hang while copying when Suggested Actions is enabled. See Mozilla’s Firefox hangs when copying with Suggested Actions enabled on Windows 11 for its current instructions. Verify the exact setting and remedy on that page rather than guessing at a fix.

A hang means the Firefox window remains open but ignores input. A crash means Firefox exits unexpectedly. If it closes, use Mozilla’s Firefox crash troubleshooting rather than treating it as an ordinary freeze.

Try reversible fixes first
- Restart the computer. Mozilla includes a computer restart among its general troubleshooting steps.
- If the issue is tied to a page loading or site behavior, consider clearing only the relevant browsing data. In Firefox, open the menu, choose Settings, then Privacy & Security and find the options for cookies and cached web content. Select only the data you intend to remove; clearing cookies can sign you out or remove site data.
- If Firefox’s interface is the problem, try clearing its startup cache. Mozilla lists this as a step for interface issues in its general Firefox troubleshooting guide. Follow the current instructions there for your Firefox version.
These steps can help in particular circumstances, but clearing cache or cookies is not a guaranteed fix for every hang.
Use Troubleshoot Mode to isolate common causes
Troubleshoot Mode is a temporary diagnostic run, not a profile reset. It disables extensions, switches to the default theme, and turns off hardware acceleration, along with other customizations. To start it, open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then Troubleshoot Mode, restart Firefox, and open it in that mode. Reproduce the same action that normally causes the freeze.
If the freeze stops
One or more features disabled in Troubleshoot Mode may be involved. Return to normal mode and test extensions, theme, and hardware acceleration separately where practical. Mozilla recommends disabling all extensions and re-enabling them one at a time. With many extensions, testing a portion of them at a time can narrow the search with fewer restarts. Change one factor at a time so the result is interpretable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the freeze continues
The extensions, theme, and hardware acceleration disabled by Troubleshoot Mode are less likely to explain the problem. That result does not prove Windows is at fault: preferences, profile data, or other causes may still be involved. Mozilla’s guide to extensions, themes, and hardware acceleration issues explains how to interpret this test.

Test hardware acceleration and check Firefox’s resource use
Turn hardware acceleration off as a separate test
Some graphics processors or driver configurations can cause Firefox crashes or display problems, so hardware acceleration is worth testing when Troubleshoot Mode changes the behavior. In Firefox, go to Settings → General → Performance. Uncheck Use recommended performance settings, then uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available. Restart Firefox and test again.
If disabling acceleration resolves the issue, Mozilla suggests updating the graphics driver using the manufacturer’s instructions or continuing to use Firefox without acceleration. This is a possible graphics-path cause, not a universal explanation for freezes.
Look for a busy tab or extension
Open Firefox Task Manager from Menu → More Tools → Task Manager, or enter about:processes in the address bar. Shift+Esc is another way to open it. Sort by CPU or Memory and look for a tab or the Extensions entry that is using unusually high resources. The figures are rough estimates; the shared extension process can aggregate enabled extensions, so a high reading is a clue, not proof that a particular item is defective. The task manager can also close a tab or unload its contents.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Firefox keeps profile data separate from its program files, and the repair options have different effects. A refresh changes the existing profile; a new profile gives you a clean comparison while leaving the old one available; reinstalling targets the application files.

| Option | What it changes | What it preserves | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Troubleshoot Mode | Temporarily disables extensions, uses the default theme, and turns off hardware acceleration. | Your normal profile is not reset. | You need to test those features without making a permanent profile change. |
| Refresh Firefox | Returns the profile to its default state, removes extensions and themes, and resets preferences. | Bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs and windows, passwords, cookies, and form autofill. | You want a profile reset and accept rebuilding customizations. |
| New profile | Creates a separate profile that starts without the old profile data. | The existing profile remains available for comparison. | You want to see whether a clean profile behaves differently without changing the old one. |
| Reinstall Firefox | Replaces the application files through Mozilla’s documented reinstall process. | Profile data is stored separately and is not removed by that process. | You suspect damaged program files after other diagnosis. |
Refresh Firefox
Before refreshing, note your custom preferences and extension names. Mozilla says Refresh Firefox saves bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs and windows, passwords, cookies, and form autofill, but removes extensions and themes and resets preferences. See Refresh Firefox for the current procedure.
Create a separate profile
If you want to retain the customized profile for comparison, create a new one rather than refreshing the old one. A new profile starts without the old profile data; it does not automatically import your settings or extensions. Mozilla’s profile manager guide explains how to create and switch profiles.
Reinstall Firefox
Reinstalling may help if application files are damaged. Mozilla’s documented reinstall process leaves profile data in its separate location. Follow Mozilla’s uninstall instructions and install Firefox again using Mozilla’s official download page.
When the freeze persists
If Firefox still hangs after these checks, gather the steps that reproduce it and the tests you have tried, then ask in the Mozilla Support community. If Windows and other applications also become unresponsive, include that detail because it changes the scope of the problem.
