1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMost “fingerprint apps” do not scan and store a new copy of your fingerprint. They ask your phone’s operating system to verify a finger already enrolled on the device, then receive an authentication result. That is different from using a camera to capture a fingerprint without touching a sensor—a separate technology with different evidence and limitations.
What does a fingerprint app actually do?
On a compatible phone, an app can request biometric authentication when you sign in, approve an action, or unlock a protected area. The operating system and device hardware perform the check; the app generally receives a success-or-failure result rather than handling the fingerprint itself. Support depends on the phone, operating system, app, and service.

Android’s developer security checklist recommends considering biometric authentication, including fingerprint scans, for appropriate apps. That describes a platform capability developers may use, not a promise that every Android app or device supports fingerprints.
Does an app get a copy of your fingerprint?
For Apple’s Touch ID, Apple says an app learns only whether authentication succeeded and “Apps can’t access Touch ID data associated with the enrolled fingerprint.” Apple also says the mathematical representation of the fingerprint is encrypted and protected in the Secure Enclave, stays on the device, and is not backed up to iCloud. These statements apply to Touch ID; they should not be assumed to describe every operating system, third-party product, or camera-based scanning app. Apple’s Touch ID & Privacy explanation provides the details.

Are fingerprint apps safe?
A biometric prompt can add a convenient way to authenticate, but it does not by itself establish that an app, account, or service is secure. Check what the app protects, what data its privacy terms say it collects, and how account recovery works. Use the biometric option only if you are comfortable with the service and device handling the surrounding account security.
NIST’s Digital Identity Guidelines say, “Biometric characteristics do not constitute secrets.” A fingerprint is a physical characteristic, not a password you can change if exposed. NIST guidance for systems within its scope treats biometrics as a factor used with a physical authenticator for multi-factor authentication, rather than as a standalone secret. That guidance is not a universal legal rule for every consumer app. See NIST SP 800-63B and NIST’s biometrics overview.

What happens if fingerprint recognition fails?
Use the alternate sign-in or recovery method offered by the device or service, such as a passcode, password, or account-recovery flow. NIST says a non-biometric alternative should always be available in the contexts covered by its guidance. Before relying on fingerprint sign-in, make sure you know which fallback the particular app provides and that you can still reach it if the sensor cannot authenticate you.

Camera-based, contactless fingerprint capture is not the same as the integrated sensor and operating-system authentication used by most fingerprint-enabled phones. A NIST study published in May 2020 assessed six contactless technologies—four smartphone-based apps and two standalone devices—using technology current around May 2019. One mobile app reached 95% accuracy and other devices approached 90%, but results varied by task; single-finger matching was comparatively poor, at 60% to 70% for contactless devices. Those findings concern contactless capture, not the performance of built-in phone authentication. NIST’s study summary explains its scope.

How should fingerprint accuracy claims be read?
NIST SP 800-63B, fourth edition, includes performance criteria for biometric systems within the guidance’s scope. It specifies a false-match rate target of one in 10,000 or better and a false non-match rate below 5%, with testing conditions and other requirements. These are not measurements of a particular phone or app, and they do not guarantee that every user will be recognized on every attempt. NIST also discusses presentation-attack detection. The criteria are for systems covered by the standard, not a consumer ranking of fingerprint apps; consult the NIST authenticator guidance for context.

- Compatibility: Confirm the feature works with your phone, operating system, and the specific app or service.
- Choice: Check whether biometric sign-in is optional and how to turn it off.
- Fallback: Identify the non-biometric sign-in and account-recovery route before you need it.
- Purpose: Understand which action the fingerprint prompt approves; it may unlock an app or authorize a step without replacing the account’s other security controls.
- Privacy: Read the app’s stated data practices, and distinguish its handling of account information from the operating system’s biometric check.
