To automatically install Microsoft Intune Company Portal on organization-owned iPhones enrolled with Apple Automated Device Enrollment (ADE), assign the app as a Required volume-purchased app using device licensing, select Install Company Portal with VPP in the ADE enrollment profile, and enable automatic app updates for the Apple Business Manager location token in Intune. For iPhones that are already enrolled, use the separate existing-device workflow: assign the required app and deploy its app configuration policy to the same device group.
What you need before configuring the deployment
- An Apple Business Manager location with a Company Portal app license acquired and assigned to it.
- The location token uploaded to Intune and synchronized. Intune uses it to sync app details and license counts; Microsoft says each location token is valid for one year. Microsoft’s Apple VPP guide explains token management and licensing.
- An Intune device group that includes the ADE iPhones you intend to target.
VPP, formerly Apple’s Volume Purchase Program, is managed through Apple Business Manager. With device licensing, the app license is associated with the device, so an App Store sign-in is not required. Device-licensed VPP apps must be installed and updated through the mobile device management (MDM) channel.

Set up automatic installation for new ADE enrollment
- Acquire and sync the app license. In Apple Business Manager, acquire the Company Portal app license for the relevant location. Download that location’s VPP token, add or update the token in Intune, and synchronize it so Intune can use the license.
- Configure the ADE enrollment profile. In Intune, open the enrollment profile for the iPhone enrollment flow and select Install Company Portal with VPP. The exact navigation labels can vary as the Intune admin center changes; Microsoft’s iOS/iPadOS enrollment guide documents the enrollment option.
- Assign Company Portal as required with device licensing. In Intune, assign Company Portal to the applicable device group as a Required app and select device licensing. A required assignment directs installation; an Available assignment waits for a user to initiate installation.
- Turn on automatic app updates for the token. In Intune’s Apple Business Manager token settings, set Automatic app updates to Yes. Microsoft identifies this as the setting for automatic Company Portal updates on ADE devices. Follow the current ADE deployment guidance if the setting’s location or wording differs in your tenant.
- Choose the enrollment authentication method. Select the method that fits your setup. Setup Assistant with modern authentication is supported on iOS/iPadOS 13.0 and later. Company Portal authentication is another option when users should authenticate through the app during setup. Microsoft outlines the choices in its ADE authentication methods reference.
VPP lets Intune install Company Portal without asking the user for an Apple ID. Without the VPP installation option, users may be asked for an Apple ID during Setup Assistant or when Intune attempts the installation.

Deploy Company Portal to iPhones that are already enrolled
Changing a profile for future ADE enrollment does not by itself install Company Portal on devices that have already completed enrollment. For those devices, Microsoft documents a separate workflow:

- Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you
- Assign Company Portal as a Required app to the existing ADE device group and use device licensing.
- Create an app configuration policy for Company Portal.
- Deploy that app configuration policy to the same device group.
- Allow devices to check in so they can receive the app and policy.
Microsoft’s ADE setup guidance says to deploy Company Portal through Intune for ADE devices; it cautions administrators not to use the App Store version. It also notes that modern-authentication enrollment can push app configuration settings automatically when Install Company Portal is enabled. Avoid deploying a conflicting manual configuration, which can prompt users incorrectly to sign in and download a management profile that is already installed.
Company Portal installation is not always the final sign-in step
Installing the app and completing identity setup are separate milestones. With Setup Assistant with modern authentication, users can reach parts of the device even if Company Portal has not installed yet. After enrollment, they may still need to sign in to Company Portal with their organization account to complete Microsoft Entra registration. Choose the workflow that matches the device

Check these common setup errors
- The app is assigned as Available: users must initiate installation. Use Required for automatic deployment.
- The assignment uses user licensing: device licensing is the relevant choice when the goal is to avoid an App Store sign-in for installation.
- Automatic updates are off: verify the Apple Business Manager token setting in Intune is set to Yes.
- The token has expired: Microsoft says a location token is valid for one year. Check its status and renew or update it in Intune as needed.
- A new-enrollment profile is expected to fix already-enrolled devices: apply the existing-device app and configuration workflow instead.
- Users can see the home screen but cannot access protected resources: check whether they still need to sign in to Company Portal and complete Microsoft Entra registration.
- Users are prompted to download a management profile already installed: review app configuration policies for conflicts with settings automatically pushed during modern-authentication enrollment.
