If your phone and Roku are already on the same network, the official Roku mobile app may also find it. But if the Roku has no Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, it has no current local network IP address to look up; reconnect it first.
First, identify which situation applies
| Situation | What can work | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Roku is online, remote is missing | Check the router’s connected-device or DHCP list; try the Roku app if it can control the device. | An existing network connection. The app also needs local access to the same network. |
| Roku is online, but the app cannot find it | Use the router’s device list, or resolve the local-network discovery issue. | Access to the router or gateway administration page. |
| Roku is offline and has no Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Reconnect it, then check the router or Roku settings. | Wi-Fi credentials, supported Ethernet, or another available setup connection. |
“Without a remote” and “without Wi-Fi” are different problems. A missing remote does not prevent the router from listing a Roku that is connected. No network connection, however, means there is no current local IP address for the router to report.

Find the IP address in the router’s device list
This is usually the best remote-free method when the Roku is already connected to your network. Router labels and screens vary, so there is no universal Roku-specific menu path.

- On a phone or computer connected to your home network, sign in to your router or ISP gateway’s administration page.
- Open the connected-device, client, or DHCP-lease list. Look for a device identified as Roku and note its assigned private IP address.
- If no Roku name is obvious, inspect device details such as the MAC address, or disconnect and reconnect the Roku and watch for the device entry that changes.
The router list can reveal the address without Roku menu access or app control, but it can only show an address for a Roku that is on the network. For router-specific instructions, consult the router manufacturer or your internet provider; Roku does not define one standard router interface.

Try the Roku mobile app if the Roku is online
Open the official Roku mobile app and select the Roku from the Devices list. Roku’s app guidance requires the phone or tablet and Roku player or TV to be on the same wireless network for local discovery and control. If the Roku uses Ethernet, it should receive an address in the same range as the phone or tablet to communicate locally. See Roku’s mobile-app connection and IP-address guidance.
- On iOS, allow the Roku app to access the local network.
- Temporarily disconnect a phone VPN if it routes traffic away from the local network.
- Check that the phone and Roku are on the same network and subnet, rather than separate guest networks.
- Check whether router client isolation is preventing devices on the network from communicating with one another.
The app’s “Connect manually” option is for entering an IP address you already know; it does not discover an unknown address.

If the Roku has no Wi-Fi connection
If the Roku is disconnected from Wi-Fi and Ethernet, reconnect it before trying to find a current local IP address. Use the on-screen setup or network flow to join Wi-Fi with the network credentials. Some Roku players support wired Ethernet, including some that can use a USB Ethernet adapter; support depends on the model. Roku’s internet connection instructions cover Wi-Fi, wired connections, and setup options.

A mobile hotspot may be an option during setup, but streaming or updates over it can use cellular data. Once the Roku has joined a network, check the router’s device list or, if you can navigate its menus, open Settings > Network > About to view the IP address, as described in Roku’s app and IP-address guidance.

When a remote is still necessary
If the Roku is online but the app cannot control it because external control is disabled, you may need a remote to change that setting or navigate the on-screen menus. Roku notes that disabling external control prevents app control. A compatible replacement remote can restore menu access, but check compatibility with your exact Roku player or TV model; the remote itself does not find the IP address. See Roku’s guidance on app control.
