To find your laptop’s model, first check the operating system: on Windows, open System Information and look for System Model; on a Mac, choose Apple menu → About This Mac. If the displayed name is missing or too general, check the laptop’s label or box, use the manufacturer’s utility or firmware screen, or enter its serial number or service tag on the manufacturer’s official support site.
Find the model in Windows
Windows may show a model name or number in its built-in tools. The exact fields depend on the computer maker and Windows version, so check the result against the laptop label or its manufacturer’s support lookup if you need an exact match.

Check System Information
- Open Start and search for System Information.
- Open the app and select System Summary if it is not already selected.
- Read the System Model field. Record the full value, including any letters, numbers, or suffixes.
If the field is blank, says something generic, or does not distinguish between variants, use another method below.
Check Settings
Open Start → Settings → System → About and inspect the device information. On Dell computers running Windows 11, Dell says the model number also appears at the top of the Settings Home and System screens. Dell notes that this display is not available in Windows 10 or earlier, and the same presentation should not be assumed on every manufacturer’s computer.

Use the laptop maker’s utility
If the utility is already installed, it may show product details. For example, Dell SupportAssist displays the Service Tag, and selecting it shows the model number and other computer details. Lenovo Vantage is another route to Lenovo product information. Use the utility from your laptop’s manufacturer; these apps are not interchangeable across brands.
Check BIOS or UEFI if Windows will not start
The firmware setup screen may show the model even when Windows cannot boot. On a Dell, power on the computer and tap F2 at the Dell logo; check the Overview tab for the model number and Service Tag. The key and menu vary by manufacturer, so do not assume F2 works on another laptop.

Identify a MacBook or other Mac laptop
Use About This Mac
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select About This Mac.
- Note the model name and serial number shown in the window.
Find more specific hardware identifiers
For additional detail, hold Option while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information. Select Hardware to see the general model name, serial number, model identifier, and model number or part number. A model identifier such as MacBookPro18,1 is not the same as the plain-language model name; use Apple’s identification information to interpret it.

ioreg -l | grep IOPlatformSerialNumberA serial number printed on the underside or packaging can help identify the Mac, but Apple cautions that it may no longer be active after a logic-board replacement. If the printed number does not work, check About This Mac when available, the device list in your Apple account, or repair documentation. Apple also provides a coverage lookup that can return a model name from a serial number.
Identify a Chromebook without mistaking its software version for its model
Use the Chromebook’s physical marking or the support channel for its manufacturer to identify the hardware. Google’s Chromebook support guidance directs users who need help to their device manufacturer.

Settings → About ChromeOS shows the ChromeOS version and update schedule. That is software information, not by itself the model name of the physical Chromebook.

Look for a product or model label on the underside of the laptop. Some computers with removable batteries may also have a label in the battery compartment. The original shipping box can be useful too: manufacturer guidance from Dell and Lenovo describes product or model details on packaging.

A label may show only a serial number or service tag rather than the model. Enter that identifier on the manufacturer’s official support site to retrieve the device’s model and support record. For Dell, the Service Tag or product model can lead to model-specific drivers, manuals, specifications, and capabilities. Apple also offers a serial-number coverage lookup.
If a printed label is faint or very small, a clear, enlarged photo or a magnifier can help you read it. HP Support suggests a magnifying glass for small labels; this is unnecessary when the model is already clear on screen.
Know which identifier you have

When recording the model, preserve the full string. A generation, screen size, or suffix can distinguish variants that otherwise have similar names. A serial number is not a substitute for the model name, although the manufacturer can use it to look up the specific machine.

Try these fallback checks in order, moving to the next one if the previous result is unavailable or unclear:
- Inspect the underside label and, if the laptop has a removable battery, the compartment beneath it.
- Open the manufacturer’s own utility, if one is installed.
- Check BIOS or UEFI using the startup instructions for that manufacturer.
- Find the serial number or service tag and use the official manufacturer support lookup.
- Check the original box, purchase records, or repair documentation.
These routes are documented by Lenovo, Dell, and Apple in different combinations. If the computer has been repaired or its parts replaced, prefer information shown by the operating system or the manufacturer’s current device record over an old label when the identifiers conflict.
