A conversational discovery workflow can make it easier to find open-source apps on GitHub without knowing which repositories to search or how to parse every README. A How-To Geek account published August 31, 2026, describes combining Claude Code, GitHub data, AlternativeTo, and web search into an app-finding flow, with a Windows example that installs a selected app through Winget. It is a friendlier route into GitHub projects—not a guarantee of software quality or safety.
What the GitHub app discovery workflow does
The described project adds a conversational layer for finding free and open-source software. Instead of starting with repository names or manually searching GitHub, a user can ask for an app by need—for example, a Windows alternative to Notion—and review a set of suggested projects.

In the account, the workflow draws candidates from three places:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Claude’s existing knowledge suggests initial candidates, which are then checked against GitHub.
- AlternativeTo provides another source of alternatives.
- General web search can surface articles and recommendations with additional candidates.
The sources are combined into a list reported as roughly 10–15 application cards. Each card may show the app name, a short description, a screenshot when available, and repository stars and forks. In the Notion-alternative example, AppFlowy, AFFiNE, and SiYuan appear. Those are examples from the reported account, not a current ranking or endorsement.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

How to read the GitHub signals
Stars and forks can help a user notice that a repository has attracted attention or has been copied for further work. They do not establish that the app is secure, actively maintained, well suited to a particular task, or better than another candidate. Counts change over time, and the account does not provide exact counts for its examples.
Before choosing an app, check the repository itself for recent releases or commits, issue activity, supported platforms, license, installation instructions, and how the app handles your data. A high star count should not substitute for those checks.

What happens when you choose an app
The account describes an installation step in which Claude reads the project’s source code and current GitHub issues for suspicious signs before proceeding. The author characterizes this check as neither antivirus software nor a formal security audit and acknowledges that it can miss problems. Treat it as a limited review, not clearance that a program is safe.
Reported Windows installation example
For the Windows example, the workflow runs a Winget installation command through PowerShell. If the user dismisses the User Account Control (UAC) elevation prompt, it detects that and offers two ways to continue. After installation, it provides instructions for launching and uninstalling the app.

This describes one reported example, not a promise that every recommended project has a Winget package, installs successfully, or uses the same process. Confirm the package identity and installation source before approving an install, and do not approve an elevation request you do not understand.
Tools behind the described setup
The account says the workflow uses Claude Code with GitHub CLI (gh). It calls gh api to retrieve repository information, including license details and issues, and keeps recurring workflow instructions in a CLAUDE.md file. AlternativeTo and ordinary web search provide additional discovery inputs; Winget is the package manager in the Windows example.

The available account does not identify an implementation repository or provide enough setup detail to reproduce the system step by step. The described approach therefore serves as a model for a discovery workflow, rather than a turnkey guide with commands and files to copy.
What this approach changes—and what it does not
It changes how a person reaches GitHub projects: a natural-language request can gather alternatives and present repository information in one place. It does not change GitHub, replace checking the project directly, or remove the judgment involved in deciding whether an app fits your needs.
