Yes—some supported iPhones can still be located for a limited time after they’re turned off, but only if Find My network was enabled beforehand. Apple states the window can be up to 24 hours after shutdown, or up to five hours in power reserve mode; those are maximums, not a promise of continuous or precise tracking.
How an iPhone can be found after it turns off
With Find My network enabled, nearby Apple devices can use Bluetooth to detect an offline iPhone and relay its approximate location to its owner. Apple describes the network as anonymous and encrypted. Whether a device can be found, and which features are available, may vary by country or region.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 says a supported iPhone may be locatable for up to 24 hours after it is turned off, or up to five hours in power reserve mode, when Find My network is on. A phone may not report a location throughout that period, and the feature does not guarantee recovery.
Turn on the settings before the iPhone goes missing
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap Find My.
- Tap Find My iPhone.
- Turn on Find My iPhone and Find My network.
- Optionally turn on Send Last Location. Apple says this sends the phone’s location when its battery charge becomes critically low.
Apple’s setup instructions are in its iPhone User Guide. Labels or availability can vary by software version and region.

What to do if the iPhone is already missing
- Open the Find My app on another Apple device, or go to iCloud.com/find.
- Select the missing iPhone from the device list and check its location or last reported location.
- Mark it as lost. Lost Mode locks the screen and can display a contact message.
These Find My actions require that Find My was enabled on the iPhone before it went missing. If it was not, Apple says the phone will not appear in Find My or iCloud.com/find and cannot be marked as lost or remotely erased through Find My. See Apple’s lost iPhone guidance.
Powered-off locating is not the same as a last known location

Apple describes the separate last-known-location period in its lost-device instructions. The seven-day period is not an extension of the 24-hour or five-hour powered-off window.

Temporarily stop Find My from locating the iPhone after shutdown
If you need to turn off the phone and do not want it to be findable through this feature, Apple’s Personal Safety Guide says to tap iPhone Findable After Power Off beneath the power-off slider and follow the onscreen instructions to disable Find My network temporarily. What this feature can—and cannot—do
- It can help you check for a location after an eligible iPhone shuts down, provided the necessary Find My settings were already on.
- It does not guarantee a live or exact position. The network reports an approximate location, and Apple’s stated time limits are not guaranteed tracking durations.
- It cannot be enabled retroactively. If Find My was off before the phone went missing, Find My cannot locate, mark as lost, or remotely erase it.
- It is not a substitute for Lost Mode. If the device appears in Find My, mark it as lost to lock it and show contact information.
