Rebirth follows Cloud and his companions after they escape Midgar, taking them across the planet in pursuit of Sephiroth and ending at the Forgotten Capital. It is the second chapter of a three-game reimagining—not a full remake of the 1997 story—and changes the route, expands the cast’s roles, and makes uncertainty about fate part of the plot.
How much of the original story does Rebirth cover?
Rebirth begins after the party leaves Midgar, where the first game, FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, set most of its story. The sequel follows their journey beyond the city and reaches the Forgotten Capital. Square Enix describes it as the second installment in a three-part project, so Rebirth does not adapt the entire 1997 game or bring the trilogy’s story to a complete conclusion. Square Enix’s official Rebirth page outlines the premise and endpoint.

The division changes the shape of the narrative: Remake gives Midgar far more room than it received in the original, while Rebirth carries the party through a much broader stretch of the world. The trilogy revisits the original’s story rather than simply reproducing it scene for scene.
What changes in the story compared with the 1997 game?
| Story element | Original game | Remake project |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | The 1997 game tells the larger story in one release, including the events beyond Midgar. | Remake focuses on Midgar; Rebirth continues after the escape and reaches the Forgotten Capital as the second chapter of three. |
| Route and locations | The original establishes a particular order for locations and story events. | Exploration order differs. Wutai is not on Rebirth’s route and is deferred to the next installment. |
| Fate and established events | The original provides the reference point for the story’s events. | Remake introduces the Whispers and raises the possibility that fate can be challenged, making the outcome less predictable for returning players. |
| Characters and continuity | Some characters, including Yuffie, were optional or less closely tied to the central party’s journey. | Formerly optional characters are more closely woven into the main story, and the trilogy draws on wider FINAL FANTASY VII lore. |
The journey takes a different route
Rebirth does not preserve the original game’s location order. Director Tetsuya Nomura said that Wutai is not part of this chapter’s route and will be visited in the next installment. Rebirth instead brings this leg of the journey to the Forgotten Capital. Nomura’s PlayStation Blog interview confirms both the changed order and Wutai’s postponement.

Fate becomes part of the story’s subject
In Remake, the Whispers are presented as arbiters of fate, and key events depart from the established course of the original. PlayStation’s guide describes Remake as largely faithful while also noting those important breaks. That premise carries into Rebirth: the story asks whether familiar events will unfold as expected. It does not, by itself, prove any particular theory about timelines or establish one definitive explanation for every difference. PlayStation’s Rebirth guide explains the fate framing.
More of the wider series enters the main narrative
The trilogy draws on stories and lore from other works in the FINAL FANTASY VII universe, not only the 1997 game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has also described how characters who were formerly optional, including Yuffie, are tied more closely to Cloud and the party’s central adventures. The result is a version of the story that can feel familiar in its foundations while incorporating more of the wider series. In a Nintendo UK interview, Hamaguchi said he was dedicated to keeping the experience authentic to FINAL FANTASY VII while making it feel fresh.

What does Rebirth’s ending confirm?
Rebirth’s story reaches the Forgotten Capital, a major point in the original’s narrative and a location the official description identifies as the chapter’s endpoint. That much is clear. The ending also uses imagery and character states that invite interpretation, but the official material cited here does not establish a single definitive reading of every ambiguous moment.
When explaining the ending, keep three things separate: what the game visibly depicts, what characters say about events, and what players infer from the presentation. A theory about how those pieces fit together may be plausible, but it should be identified as interpretation rather than settled fact. The story’s fate-focused premise makes uncertainty meaningful; it does not make every proposed explanation confirmed.

What should returning players expect?
- A continuation, not a replacement: Rebirth assumes the party has escaped Midgar and develops the story from there.
- Familiar milestones with changed context: The original remains a reference point, but altered pacing, route order, character roles, and fate-related developments affect how events land.
- Uncertainty is intentional: Knowing the 1997 story does not guarantee that every later event will happen in the same way.
- The story is not finished here: Rebirth is the second part of a planned three-game reimagining.
