No—you can start Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without playing Remake. Square Enix calls Rebirth a standalone game for newcomers and includes an optional in-game recap of Remake. Playing Remake first is still the best way to experience the story in sequence; the recap is the quicker way to catch up.
What “standalone” means for Rebirth
Rebirth is the second game in Square Enix’s remake project, which the publisher describes as three distinct, standalone parts. It continues the journey of Cloud and his companions after they leave Midgar, so it follows the events of Remake even though Square Enix says newcomers can begin here. Square Enix’s official FAQ describes Rebirth as “a standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers alike.”

Choose the route that fits you

Play Remake first if you want the full lead-in
Choose this route if you want to experience the previous installment rather than hear its story summarized, or if you already own it and want to follow the journey in order. This is a recommendation for narrative continuity, not a prerequisite imposed by Square Enix.
Use the recap if you want to begin Rebirth now
Square Enix says the in-game menu offers a Remake story recap for players who want to learn the story so far. The publisher also presents its recap video as useful both for a refresher and for people planning to start with Rebirth. Square Enix’s recap-video explanation describes that purpose; it does not compare the recap with playing the earlier game.

Do you need to play the original Final Fantasy VII or other entries?
No. Square Enix’s FAQ says each Final Fantasy has its own story and that you can start with Rebirth without playing another series entry. You do not need to play the original 1997 game or another Final Fantasy title to meet the publisher’s stated starting point.

No. The practical choice is how much of the preceding story you want before continuing: play Remake for the full earlier installment, or watch the recap to get the publisher-provided overview and move straight to Rebirth. Square Enix does not claim that the recap contains every detail of the earlier game.
