Final Fantasy VI keeps characters’ signature commands and layers magicite-based spell learning, summons, and some level-up bonuses on top. In short, V’s flexibility comes from changing and combining jobs; VI’s comes from choosing magicite for characters with more distinct identities.
How progression works in Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy V tracks character level separately from job level. After battle, characters earn experience points and ability points (ABP): experience raises character level, while ABP advances the job currently selected. As a job gains levels, it teaches abilities associated with that job.

Learned job abilities remain available after a character changes jobs, and abilities from different jobs can be combined. That makes progression cumulative: a character’s current job sets their role, while abilities learned earlier can expand how they perform it. The number of useful combinations depends on the abilities involved; flexibility does not make every pairing effective.
What the player chooses
The main decisions are which job a character should use now and which mastered abilities to bring along. A change of job does not erase learned abilities, so experimenting develops a toolkit that can be rearranged as the party’s needs change.

How progression works in Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VI gives characters distinctive battle commands, such as Locke’s Steal, Edgar’s Tools, Sabin’s Blitz, Cyan’s SwordTech, and Gau’s Rage. Magicite does not replace those identities: it provides another layer of customization by teaching spells, enabling summons, and, for some magicite, affecting attribute growth.
In the PlayStation version covered by the Final Fantasy Anthology manual, a character equips one piece of magicite at a time. After battle, the character earns magic points (AP), which advance spell learning according to the rates listed for that magicite. Once progress reaches 100 percent, the spell is learned. If the character changes or removes the magicite first, accumulated learning progress is retained.

What magicite changes
- Spell access: Equipped magicite teaches spells at its listed learning rates.
- Summons: The equipped esper can be summoned in battle, subject to the game’s restrictions.
- Level-up growth: Some magicite grants a permanent attribute increase when its wearer gains a character level.
So the central choice is which magicite to equip for its spells, summon, or possible level-up bonus, while each character’s signature command remains part of their battle identity.
Final Fantasy V and VI compared
| Progression question | Final Fantasy V | Final Fantasy VI |
|---|---|---|
| Where role identity sits | The selected job sets the character’s current role and job-specific command. | Characters retain distinctive commands; magicite adds spell learning and customization. |
| How abilities are learned | ABP raises a job’s separate level and unlocks its abilities. | Battle-earned AP advances spell learning at the equipped magicite’s listed rate. |
| What persists after a change | Learned job abilities remain available after changing jobs and can be combined with abilities from another job. | Spell-learning progress remains after changing or removing magicite, and learned spells are retained. |
| How equipment affects growth | The PlayStation Anthology manual’s job progression description centers on jobs, ABP, and transferable abilities. | Some magicite gives a permanent attribute increase when its wearer gains a level. |
| Main customization decision | Choose the current job and which previously learned abilities to pair with it. | Choose magicite for spells, summons, and possible level-up bonuses while using character-specific commands. |
The detailed mechanics in this comparison are documented in the PlayStation Final Fantasy Anthology manual. Square Enix’s Pixel Remaster announcements corroborate the broad distinction—a job system in V and magicite customization in VI—but do not establish that every mechanic is identical in every later edition. Square Enix described V’s job system in its November 10, 2021 Pixel Remaster announcement and VI’s magicite system in its February 10, 2022 announcement.
