Final Fantasy VI puts more emphasis on each character’s identity and signature ability, while magicite lets characters learn spells and summon espers. In short, V asks which job and abilities to combine; VI asks how to develop a particular character and which magicite to equip.
How does the FFV job system work?
In Final Fantasy V, character level and job level progress separately. Characters earn Ability Points (AP) to raise a job’s level and unlock abilities for that job. After learning an ability, a character can retain access to it when changing jobs, allowing the player to combine a new role with abilities learned elsewhere.

That makes V’s customization chiefly player-configured: you choose a character’s current job and, where available, equip abilities learned through job progression. The PlayStation Final Fantasy Anthology manual describes the job and ability system; its interface and details should not automatically be assumed to apply identically to every release. Does Final Fantasy VI have a job system?
Not in the same sense as V’s freely changeable jobs. VI gives its characters distinct identities and individual abilities, rather than making job selection the main way to define a character’s role. The game’s progression therefore feels less like assembling a job-and-ability combination and more like developing a character whose personal strengths remain part of the picture.
#1 Best Overall
There is an important qualification: the broad contrast does not mean every character or release works identically, or that VI offers no customization. Story progression and version can affect the details. The game’s character abilities and magicite system are described in the Final Fantasy VI reference.
How does magicite change character development in FFVI?
Magicite provides a shared way for characters to learn many spells, alongside their individual abilities. The Final Fantasy VI Advance instruction manual explains: “By equipping magicite, the crystallized essence of an esper’s power, characters can learn magic spells and gain the ability to summon the mystic beasts.” Characters make progress toward spells associated with the magicite they have equipped. Equipping magicite also grants the ability to summon its esper.

Terra is a notable exception to the idea that magic access comes only from magicite: Square Enix describes her as having been born with the ability to wield magic. That distinction helps clarify VI’s design: magicite broadens how characters develop, but it does not replace their individual identities. See the Final Fantasy VI Advance manual and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VI page.
Which game offers more flexibility?
| Question | Final Fantasy V | Final Fantasy VI |
|---|---|---|
| What defines a character’s role? | A job the player can change, combined with learned abilities. | The character’s distinct identity and signature ability, developed alongside magic access. |
| How are abilities developed? | Earn AP to level jobs and unlock job abilities. | Equip magicite to learn its associated spells; characters also retain their individual abilities. |
| Where does customization come from? | Combining a current job with abilities learned from job progression. | Choosing magicite and developing characters without erasing their individual identities. |
| Useful question to ask | “What job and learned abilities should this character use?” | “How should this character be developed, and which magicite should they equip?” |
V’s flexibility is centered on changing and combining roles. VI’s comes from character development and magicite choices within a cast whose members have their own abilities. The contrast is about where customization is anchored, not a claim that one game has no flexibility.
