Square Enix has also announced that the Highwind will let players freely explore the entire planet in the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation, but that feature is a pre-release promise, not something verified in a released game. Other titles use airships or aircraft for transport without the same explicit claim of free piloting.
What counts as free airship exploration?
An airship appearing in a Final Fantasy game does not necessarily mean you can pilot it freely. To compare the games fairly, separate four things:

- Scope: Does travel cover a whole planet, a world map, one region, or fixed routes?
- Control: Do you steer the craft, or choose a destination from a menu?
- Access: When does the craft become usable?
- Landing: Where can you land, and what exploration is available afterward?
The official descriptions available for these games do not answer every question for every craft. The comparisons below stick to what Square Enix states rather than assuming all airships work alike.

Which Final Fantasy games let you explore freely?

What the free-flight claims mean in practice
Final Fantasy XII: the established example
Square Enix’s Jan. 20, 2022 official series roundup ties the Strahl’s free travel to obtaining a new skystone. That makes Final Fantasy XII the strongest released-game answer in this comparison. The source does not specify the exact unlock point, flight controls, or landing restrictions, so those details should not be inferred from the phrase “travel freely.”

Final Fantasy VII Revelation: an announced future feature
Square Enix says in its Aug. 27, 2026 announcement that “the entire planet is freely explorable via the Highwind airship,” and that players can parachute down anywhere, “seamlessly transitioning from air to land.” Those statements describe a broader kind of exploration than fixed-route transport. They are still a publisher announcement for a game due in Spring 2027, not confirmation from a released build. Square Enix lists PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as platforms.
Airships that are transport, not confirmed free flight
Final Fantasy XIV: one option among several
The official game-systems overview says, “Take flight aboard an airship or sail across Eorzean seas by ferry.” It presents airships as part of a larger transport system that also includes city routes, chocobo porters, mounts, and teleportation. That is useful airship travel, but the overview does not establish freely controlled flight across the world.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: regional traversal by aircraft
Rebirth’s official world page describes the Tiny Bronco landing at old airstrips and getting the party where it needs to go. The same page presents other traversal options as region-based. It does not characterize the Tiny Bronco as a freely flown, global airship, so it is more precise to call it an aircraft within a broader regional travel system.

What about the classic airships?
Square Enix’s 2022 roundup also identifies the buried airship in Final Fantasy I, the Lunar Whale in Final Fantasy IV, and the Invincible in Final Fantasy IX. It says the Final Fantasy I airship requires a special item, the Lunar Whale enables travel to the moon with the Crystal of Flight, and the Invincible is connected to antagonist Kuja.

Those details establish each craft’s story or acquisition context, but the roundup does not explain player control or navigation limits for these games. It is therefore not enough to rank them against the Strahl as free-exploration experiences.
