For most gamers, the HyperX Cloud III is the safer choice: its conventional closed-back tuning, USB and 3.5mm connections, and broad PC/console compatibility make it easier to use and easier to predict. The FiiO FG3 is the more specialised option. Its coaxial 50mm-plus-16mm dual-driver system and DSP can produce a more energetic, spacious presentation, but its V-shaped tuning pushes the mids back and may sound muddy until you adjust the EQ.
There is no controlled head-to-head measurement establishing a universal winner. The better-sounding headset depends on whether you prefer excitement or neutrality, whether you will tune software, how each model fits your head, and which devices you need to connect.

FiiO FG3 and HyperX Cloud III are fundamentally different headsets
The comparison is not simply a contest between two similarly tuned gaming headphones. The FiiO FG3 is built around a coaxial dual-driver arrangement: a 50mm dynamic driver and a 16mm dynamic driver share one acoustic point. FiiO says this design is intended to keep phase and directionality consistent for precise positioning, and the headset includes digital signal processing (DSP) rather than relying only on passive driver tuning.

The HyperX Cloud III takes the more familiar route. It uses one 53mm dynamic driver in a closed-back over-ear enclosure. That simpler architecture does not automatically make it less detailed; it means the sound is shaped by one driver and a conventional gaming-headset design instead of two coaxial drivers with configurable processing.

How the FiiO FG3 sounds
Energetic V-shaped tuning
Independent listening reports consistently describe the FG3 as lively rather than neutral. TechRadar calls it a “distinct V-shaped sound profile,” with bass and treble well defined while “mids are a little lost.” In practical terms, the low and high frequencies receive more emphasis than the middle of the mix. Explosions, engine noise and high-frequency effects can feel immediate and exciting, while vocals, dialogue and instruments occupying the midrange may sit farther back.
That character can be enjoyable in action games and electronic or rock music. It is less ideal if your priority is a natural voice, a forward teammate callout or an even presentation for every music genre.
Default EQ may need work
Tom’s Guide reports that the FG3’s default sound can be muddy and benefits from EQ. That is a reviewer observation, not a controlled frequency-response measurement. The important buying implication is that the headset is not necessarily at its best when connected and left untouched.
FiiO’s DSP and web-based EQ controls give you a way to rebalance the presentation. A listener who finds the bass too thick can reduce low-frequency emphasis; someone who hears recessed speech can bring the mids forward; and a treble-sensitive listener can soften the upper range. The exact settings should follow your ears, game mix and volume rather than a universal preset.

Detail and positional cues
The second, 16mm high-frequency driver is intended to add extension and definition, and the coaxial layout puts both drivers at a single point source. FiiO describes that arrangement as keeping phase and directionality “highly consistent,” resulting in “pinpoint-accurate soundstage positioning.” That is the manufacturer’s design explanation, not proof that every player will locate footsteps more accurately than with Cloud III.
With an EQ that keeps the bass from masking quiet effects, the FG3 can make small high-frequency cues feel prominent. However, a brighter or more V-shaped balance is not identical to better imaging. Ear shape, seal, game audio, volume and personal sensitivity all influence whether a footstep sounds clear or merely sharp.
How the HyperX Cloud III sounds
Predictable closed-back presentation
Cloud III uses one 53mm driver and a closed-back enclosure. GamesRadar’s review praises its audio and microphone performance, while describing the drivers as angled and covering a 10Hz–21kHz range. The resulting presentation is the conventional gaming-headset approach: focused, direct and easier to understand without configuring a multi-driver DSP system.
Cloud III is not presented in the cited material as a laboratory-neutral reference headphone. Its advantage is consistency. You connect it, select the appropriate USB or analogue output, and the balance is less dependent on finding a personal EQ curve.
Footsteps, dialogue and music
For competitive games, clear mids can matter as much as treble detail. Teammate voices, reload sounds and many positional cues occupy the middle of the spectrum. Cloud III’s simpler tuning avoids the FG3’s explicitly reported mid recession, so it is the lower-risk choice when you want speech and effects to remain intelligible across different games.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Music is more subjective. FG3’s elevated bass and treble can make rhythm tracks feel more dramatic and expose a sense of sparkle, but the recessed mids can reduce vocal intimacy. Cloud III’s single-driver balance is less flamboyant; listeners who prefer a straightforward, all-round sound may find it easier for mixed playlists.

Neither headset has a controlled, directly comparable measurement in the available evidence. Claims that one universally produces better footsteps, a wider stage or more accurate music would therefore go beyond what has been established.
Spatial audio and processing differences
FG3 virtual 7.1 and DSP
The FG3 includes virtual 7.1 in supported modes through its DSP and control software. This gives you an additional processing option for games that benefit from a simulated surround presentation. Virtual surround can increase a sense of width, but it can also change tonal balance or make a cue less focused. Compare it with stereo in the same game and keep the mode that lets you identify direction most reliably.
Because the FG3 processes audio digitally, your result can change when you switch between USB operation, software profiles and different EQ settings. Save a profile for competitive games and another for music only if you can identify a real benefit; more processing is not automatically more accurate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCloud III connection choices
Cloud III offers 3.5mm, USB-A and USB-C connections. The analogue path is useful with devices that expose a standard headset jack, while USB provides a digital connection to compatible computers and consoles. The cited official information emphasises compatibility and wired operation rather than a directly measured surround advantage.
With Cloud III, start with the game’s native stereo or spatial setting and change one processing layer at a time. Running a console’s surround mode, a game’s own virtualisation and an additional headset effect simultaneously can make positioning less predictable.
Setup: getting the best result from each headset
FiiO FG3 setup
- Connect the headset using USB-C or USB-A, choosing the connector that matches your computer or console.
- Set FG3 as the system’s playback and communication device, then confirm that the game is using the same output.
- Open FiiO’s control or web EQ/DSP interface and listen to the default profile with a familiar game.
- If explosions or music mask speech and footsteps, reduce bass emphasis before adding more treble.
- If voices sound distant, make a modest midrange adjustment. If cymbals or interface sounds become sharp, reduce the upper range instead of lowering overall volume.
- Test virtual 7.1 against stereo in the same map or level. Keep the setting that makes left-right and front-back cues easiest to identify.
The FG3’s value is highest when you are willing to perform this short tuning process. If you do not want software adjustments, you are accepting its factory V-shaped balance, including the possibility of a muddy default noted by Tom’s Guide.

HyperX Cloud III setup
- Choose USB-A or USB-C when you want a digital connection, or use the 3.5mm connection with a compatible headset jack.
- Select Cloud III as the playback and microphone device in the operating system or console audio menu.
- Set the game to its normal headphone or stereo mode first and establish a comfortable volume.
- Play a section with speech, quiet environmental sounds and directional effects before changing any additional spatial processing.
- If your platform offers its own spatial mode, compare it directly with stereo and retain only the option that improves your ability to locate sounds.
This process is intentionally simpler than the FG3 workflow. Cloud III is the better fit for a household where the headset must move between systems without rebuilding an EQ profile.

Compatibility and everyday practicality
Why Cloud III is easier across platforms
The combination of 3.5mm, USB-A and USB-C gives Cloud III several connection routes. That matters if you alternate between a desktop, a laptop, a console controller and a console dock. The closed-back design also reduces leakage compared with an open-back headphone, which is useful when other people are nearby or a microphone is active.
Cloud III is therefore the practical choice for a player who values broad compatibility over a specialised sound system. The official specification cited here does not require you to choose a single digital connector, and the analogue option can keep working when USB features are unavailable.
What FG3’s USB design implies
FG3 is specified with USB-C and USB-A and supports up to 192kHz/24-bit processing. That is useful for a digital-first setup and gives the DSP room for EQ and virtual 7.1 modes. It is less convenient if your main source only provides a 3.5mm analogue jack, because the cited configuration does not list a 3.5mm connection.
Check the ports on every device you intend to use before buying. A USB adapter may solve a connector mismatch, but it adds another item and does not turn the FG3 into a conventional analogue headset.
Comfort, fit and microphone considerations
Both products are over-ear designs in the configurations described here, and their published weights are nearly identical. That does not make them equally comfortable for every person. Clamp force, ear-pad depth, glasses, head width and whether your ears touch the driver can change the result more than a specification sheet.

Use a return policy that allows a genuine fit check when possible. During that check, wear the headset for at least the length of a normal gaming session and test it while looking down, turning your head and speaking. A seal that breaks when you move can reduce bass and make either model sound thinner than it did at first listen.
GamesRadar specifically praises Cloud III’s microphone performance. The cited FG3 reports focus on its drivers, tuning and DSP rather than providing a comparable microphone assessment, so do not assume equal voice quality from the specifications alone.
Which headset is better for specific priorities?
| Priority | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-and-play gaming | HyperX Cloud III | Its single-driver closed-back design is simpler to use and less dependent on EQ. |
| Energetic bass and treble | FiiO FG3 | Independent reviews describe a distinct V-shaped profile with defined bass and treble. |
| Forward dialogue and dependable speech clarity | HyperX Cloud III | FG3’s mids are reported as somewhat recessed; Cloud III avoids that specifically documented caveat. |
| Willingness to customise sound | FiiO FG3 | Its DSP, web EQ and virtual 7.1 modes provide more configuration options. |
| Switching among PC and consoles | HyperX Cloud III | It offers 3.5mm, USB-A and USB-C connections. |
| Digital USB setup with high-resolution processing | FiiO FG3 | FiiO specifies up to 192kHz/24-bit processing over its USB-oriented design. |
| Music with prominent vocals | HyperX Cloud III is the safer audition | FG3’s reported mid recession can move vocals back; personal preference still decides the result. |
| Music with a lively, bass-forward presentation | FiiO FG3 | Its V-shaped emphasis is more deliberately dramatic. |
Who should buy the FiiO FG3?
- You enjoy a lively V-shaped sound rather than a restrained, even balance.
- You want a coaxial 50mm-plus-16mm driver system and are interested in the engineering behind it.
- You will use FiiO’s EQ and DSP controls instead of judging the headset only from its factory profile.
- Your main devices support USB-C or USB-A and you want digital processing and virtual 7.1 options.
- You are comfortable accepting that the default sound may be muddy or that vocals can sit behind bass and treble until adjusted.
FiiO describes FG3 as “our first step into this new arena.” That makes it an interesting choice for an enthusiast, but the product’s specialist character is also why it is not the automatic recommendation for every gamer.

Who should buy the HyperX Cloud III?
- You want clear gaming audio without spending time finding an EQ profile.
- You switch between PC and consoles or need both USB and 3.5mm connectivity.
- You prefer a conventional closed-back presentation that keeps voices and game effects predictable.
- You want a microphone that received positive comment in GamesRadar’s review.
- You would rather choose a headset by fit and everyday convenience than by dual-driver architecture.
What the available evidence cannot prove
Published specifications and independent reviews can describe the designs and listening impressions, but they do not settle every performance question. No controlled head-to-head measurement is available here for frequency response, imaging accuracy, soundstage width, latency, microphone frequency response or footsteps in a standardised game test.
It is therefore reasonable to say that FG3 offers more adjustable hardware and a more emphatic tuning, and that Cloud III offers a simpler, broadly compatible gaming package. It is not reasonable to claim that either headset wins every competitive game, every music genre or every listener’s ears.
Final buying decision
Choose the HyperX Cloud III when you want the lowest-friction path to clear gaming sound. Its closed-back, single-driver design, three connection options and positive independent comments about audio and microphone performance make it the safer general recommendation.
Choose the FiiO FG3 when the appeal is the sound itself: a pronounced bass-and-treble lift, coaxial dual-driver hardware, USB DSP, EQ and virtual 7.1. Give yourself time to tune it, and buy only if your devices fit its USB-focused connection approach.
