FFmpeg vs. OBS for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist: CPU Use and Reliability

FFmpeg and OBS have no proven universal CPU or reliability winner for a 24/7 YouTube playlist. Compare their workflows, configure YouTube ingest settings, and test recovery on your actual setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither FFmpeg nor OBS is a proven universal winner for CPU use or 24/7 reliability. CPU load depends on what each setup actually does—especially encoding, decoding, filters, scaling, and scene rendering—and neither tool’s documentation provides a matched CPU benchmark or comparative endurance test. OBS offers documented reconnect controls and a graphical production interface; FFmpeg is a flexible command-line media framework. Choose based on whether you need scenes and operator controls or a scripted media pipeline, then test the exact playlist, settings, computer, and connection you intend to use.

What changes CPU use in a 24/7 stream?

The workload matters more than the application name. Copying a compatible encoded stream, decoding and re-encoding it, applying filters or scaling, and compositing scenes are different processing paths with different costs. A meaningful comparison must use the same source files, output codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, hardware, and encoder settings.

FFmpeg describes itself as a media framework for reading, filtering, and transcoding media. That flexibility can support a lean, fixed-purpose command, but its documentation does not establish that FFmpeg always uses less CPU than OBS. FFmpeg documentation

OBS composites and renders scenes as well as encoding. Its documentation notes that hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU; this can reduce CPU encoding load, but it does not remove scene-rendering work or guarantee a reliable stream. OBS lists NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox with platform-specific qualifications, so verify support for your operating system, GPU, drivers, and encoder. There are no evidence-based CPU percentages to quote for this comparison. To compare your own setups, measure CPU and GPU use, dropped or duplicated frames, encoder overload, playlist transitions, reconnect events, stream health, and output quality over the same multi-hour or multi-day run.

Which tool fits your playlist workflow?

Decision point FFmpeg OBS Studio
Best fit Scripted, single-purpose media processing and streaming; the command and playlist behavior need to be configured deliberately. Graphical production with scenes, compositing, and operator-facing controls.
CPU and GPU considerations Load depends on whether the pipeline copies, decodes, filters, scales, or encodes media. The official manual gives no universal CPU comparison with OBS. Scene compositing and rendering use GPU resources; a supported hardware encoder can reduce CPU encoding work. Neither fact predicts total load for a particular setup.
Reconnect and restart Behavior depends on the command, input and playlist construction, output protocol, error handling, and any external supervisor. The cited manuals do not establish a built-in one-click 24/7 supervisor or uptime guarantee. Provides configurable auto-reconnect controls for supported outputs. Reconnection is not a guarantee that the entire setup will recover from every failure.
Operation and monitoring Plan how to detect process exit, playlist exhaustion, bad media, connection failure, and host restart; monitoring and restart policy need to fit your system. Offers a graphical interface and output status, but still requires monitoring of the source, connection, and YouTube stream health.

The comparison describes workflow and documented controls, not a measured ranking. FFmpeg can be the better fit when you can maintain a scripted pipeline and its recovery plan. OBS can suit a creator who needs scenes or prefers a graphical interface. Test playlist looping, mixed file properties, transitions, and failure recovery in either case.

Set up and validate either encoder for YouTube

  1. Check the current YouTube ingest guidance. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and support for H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Prefer RTMPS where supported. Confirm the current guidance for your chosen codec and output before configuring the encoder. YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
  2. Choose a bitrate for your output and connection. As examples from YouTube’s current guidance, for 1080p at 30 fps it lists H.264 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and AV1/H.265 at 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU measurements or guarantees of quality or connection stability. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance advises matching bitrate to stable upload capacity; lowering it may reduce quality and will not fix an underlying network fault. OBS stream connection troubleshooting
  3. Connect using the YouTube server URL and stream key. Enter the stream details in the chosen encoder and keep the key private: it functions as a credential. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  4. Test the real playlist, not just one file. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement. Also check transitions, differing file properties, missing or corrupt entries, audio changes, and the intended repeat or end behavior. These edge cases determine whether a playlist-based setup actually continues as expected.
  5. Watch the full run. Record dropped frames, encoding overload indicators, reconnect events, YouTube stream-health messages, audio presence, and whether playback advances across playlist boundaries. OBS’s output reference documents frame-drop reporting associated with network congestion. A rising dropped-frame count calls for network diagnosis as well as encoder checks; lowering bitrate is a trade-off, not a repair. OBS Studio output reference
  6. Plan for failures beyond the encoder. Use a process monitor or supervisor appropriate to your operating system and decide what should happen after a process exit, power loss, network interruption, or host restart. A retry setting alone does not cover every failure mode.

Reliability: reconnect is only one part of the plan

OBS exposes auto-reconnect settings for supported outputs, including a maximum retry count and a starting retry wait; the wait doubles with each attempt. These controls can help with transient disconnects, but they do not prove that OBS is more reliable than a properly supervised FFmpeg process. OBS Studio output reference

With FFmpeg, recovery depends on how the command handles inputs and errors, how the playlist is constructed, and whether an external supervisor restarts the process. Do not treat a copied command as production-ready unless you have checked what happens when the playlist ends, a media file is malformed, the connection fails, the process exits, or the host restarts. The FFmpeg manuals describe media processing and output capabilities; they do not establish comparative uptime or a turnkey 24/7 playlist supervisor. FFmpeg all documentation

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health. Its setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish how a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. YouTube encoder setup

Troubleshoot the symptoms that interrupt a long stream

  • CPU or encoder overload: Check whether the output is being re-encoded, whether filters, scaling, or complex OBS scenes add work, and whether the selected frame rate and resolution are necessary. In OBS, consider a compatible hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the bottleneck, while checking GPU and rendering load too.
  • Dropped frames or unstable ingest: Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity, inspect network and server conditions, and investigate software that may interfere with the connection. OBS guidance recommends checking these factors; reducing bitrate may lower quality without curing the cause.
  • Stream reconnects but does not resume correctly: Verify retry behavior, source continuity, playlist handling, and any process supervisor. Test a deliberate interruption and confirm that playback and audio return as intended.
  • Playlist stalls or changes unexpectedly: Test every transition, file variation, missing or damaged entry, and repeat/end setting. Check the source itself rather than relying only on the encoder’s connected status.
  • YouTube reports stream-health problems: Review YouTube’s message and verify codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, server URL, and stream key against current setup guidance. Test with representative audio and motion before relying on a continuous run.
