Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo run a continuous YouTube stream from an Ubuntu or Debian VPS, install GStreamer’s command-line tools and the plug-ins for H.264 encoding, FLV muxing and RTMPS output. Build a pipeline that feeds a continuous video source through x264enc and flvmux to rtmpsink, then supply the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Before relying on a low-cost server, test that its CPU can encode your chosen format and its outbound connection can sustain the bitrate.
Install the GStreamer packages on Ubuntu or Debian
Start with the command-line runner and the main plug-in families. These are apt package examples; element availability can vary by distribution release and repository configuration.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly
Add gstreamer1.0-libav if your chosen media requires formats supplied by that plug-in. The GStreamer Linux installation guidance describes package installation: GStreamer installation on Linux. GStreamer packages themselves are typically available through distribution package managers, but the exact repository setup and package state depend on the VPS image. Keep the OS and its packages maintained with security updates.
Check that the needed elements exist
Use gst-inspect-1.0 on the actual server rather than assuming a package name guarantees an element on every release:

- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
gst-inspect-1.0 x264enc
gst-inspect-1.0 h264parse
gst-inspect-1.0 flvmux
gst-inspect-1.0 rtmpsink
The relevant mappings are x264enc in Ugly Plug-ins, flvmux in Good Plug-ins and rtmpsink in Bad Plug-ins. The sink uses librtmp. The x264enc documentation, flvmux documentation and rtmpsink documentation describe the elements. Check the AAC encoder you intend to use in the same way; its package and element availability depend on the distribution.
Use a test pipeline before connecting your own video
This video-only example generates test bars and sends them through H.264 encoding, FLV muxing and RTMPS output. It is a starting point, not a verified production command; confirm element properties, negotiated caps and the exact sink URL form against the installed GStreamer version and YouTube Live Control Room.
gst-launch-1.0 -v
videotestsrc is-live=true !
video/x-raw,framerate=30/1,width=1280,height=720 !
videoconvert ! x264enc tune=zerolatency speed-preset=veryfast bitrate=6000 key-int-max=60 !
video/x-h264,profile=main ! h264parse !
flvmux streamable=true !
rtmpsink location="<RTMPS_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
The example requests 1280×720 at 30 fps. In x264enc, bitrate is expressed in kbit/s, so 6000 is a 6,000 kbit/s video target. key-int-max=60 at 30 fps sets a maximum interval of 60 frames, equivalent to two seconds. Those values are configuration choices, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or deliver them reliably.

Replace the test source with continuous media
For a real stream, replace videotestsrc and its raw-video caps with a source that produces the video you intend to send. It must supply frames continuously; a finite file source by itself will eventually reach the end rather than run forever. If you want to stream a recording repeatedly, use a looping source or playlist arrangement appropriate to that media and verify that it stays live across transitions. The pipeline’s essential path remains video source, H.264 encoder, parser, FLV muxer and RTMPS sink.
Add audio when the program has audio
The example is video-only. For a stream with sound, add a separate audio branch, encode it to AAC, and connect the encoded audio to another input on flvmux. Do not deploy a production command with a disconnected audio branch or unintended silence. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 for audio and recommends 128 kbps for stereo AAC or MP3. Confirm the chosen encoder’s available element and properties on the host before assembling the full pipeline.
Set bitrate, keyframes and audio for YouTube Live
YouTube recommends selecting settings that fit the available connection, testing with similar motion and audio, and watching stream health. Its H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30; the corresponding listed minimums are 3 Mbps and 5 Mbps. For 480p30, YouTube lists 4 Mbps recommended and 0.4 Mbps minimum; for 360p30 it lists 3 Mbps recommended and 0.4 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not proof that a VPS has the CPU or network capacity to sustain them. Consult the official table for other resolutions and frame rates rather than extrapolating: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
- Use H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR) and set the target according to YouTube’s resolution-and-frame-rate guidance.
- Target a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it must not exceed four seconds.
- For SDR, YouTube recommends progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, two B-frames and one reference frame.
- For stereo audio, YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio it specifies 48 kHz and 384 kbps; AAC is required for 5.1 over RTMP(S).
- YouTube accepts H.264, H.265 or AV1 video in its encoder guidance and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. The sample pipeline uses H.264 through
x264enc.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats. You still need to send a stable, correctly configured ingest stream; viewer-side transcoding does not compensate for dropped frames or an undersized VPS.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. In YouTube Live Control Room, reveal the RTMPS URL and copy the stream key, then use those values in the sink’s location in the form supported by your installed rtmpsink. The exact endpoint and key come from your own Live Control Room; do not substitute a guessed URL.
YouTube notes that an SSL error may occur if you use rtmp instead of rtmps; check the scheme and port 443 if the secure connection fails. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a repository, screenshot, log or support request.
- A command-line key can be exposed through shell history or process visibility. For ongoing use, store secrets with appropriate access controls and avoid printing the full sink location in logs.
- If you suspect exposure, replace or reset the key in Live Control Room and update the process using it.
Size the VPS for encoding and outbound traffic
A 720p30 stream at YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps video bitrate sends 6 megabits per second of video alone, continuously, before audio and transport overhead. The machine must also encode roughly 30 frames every second without allowing processing to fall behind. Software encoding with x264enc consumes CPU; the load depends on the resolution, frame rate and encoder settings. GStreamer’s x264 documentation also cautions that encoder settings can introduce latency.
There is no universal minimum vCPU count or India VPS plan established for this workload. Before choosing a provider, verify its current disclosures and terms for:
- Data-center location and whether it meets your latency or regulatory needs.
- Sustained outbound throughput, egress allowances and any traffic charges.
- vCPU availability, throttling policy and whether CPU capacity is shared.
- Process restart behavior, support arrangements and current service terms.
Do not treat a plan’s advertised peak network rate as evidence of continuous usable throughput. Run a representative test at the intended resolution, frame rate and audio settings. Watch VPS CPU usage, dropped frames, pipeline errors and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Repeat under realistic conditions before relying on it for a 24/7 channel.

Keep the pipeline running and recover from failures
A foreground gst-launch-1.0 session is useful for diagnosis but is not, by itself, a 24/7 operations plan. Use a process supervisor or equivalent service manager so that an unexpected process exit can be detected and restarted. Add alerting for repeated restarts, missing output and server resource pressure. Keep the stream key secured in the service configuration, restrict access to it, and test the recovery path deliberately.
A restart can reconnect the encoder process, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube or the VPS provider will remain available. Investigate whether a failure came from the source ending, an encoder overload, a network interruption, an invalid endpoint or a rejected key before increasing restart frequency. The YouTube and GStreamer guidance cited here does not validate any specific VPS provider’s uptime or guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
gst-inspect-1.0 cannot find an element |
The plug-in family is missing, unavailable in the configured repositories, or differs on this distribution release. | Confirm installed package state and repository configuration; install the relevant plug-in family, then inspect the element again. |
| Pipeline fails while linking elements | Caps or pad types do not match, an element lacks a required property, or audio/video branches are not connected correctly. | Run with -v, inspect each element with gst-inspect-1.0, and verify negotiated formats and muxer inputs. |
| RTMPS connection or SSL error | The URL may use the wrong scheme, endpoint or port, or the host may not support the needed secure sink connection. | Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, check for rtmps rather than rtmp, and verify port 443 access and local sink support. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong key or endpoint, outbound connectivity restrictions, or an invalid/missing stream branch. | Recheck the private URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm outbound access, and inspect pipeline errors without exposing the key. |
| Stream health reports dropped frames or the pipeline falls behind | CPU cannot encode the selected settings fast enough, network throughput is insufficient, or the VPS is throttled. | Compare CPU and outbound usage with the target settings; test a lower resolution or bitrate and investigate provider limits. |
| Stream stops after a period | The source may have reached end-of-file, the process may have exited, or the connection may have dropped. | Ensure the source is continuous or loops as intended; use supervision and alerts, then identify the actual exit or connection error. |
| Audio is absent or rejected | No encoded audio reached the muxer, or the codec, sample rate or channel configuration is unsuitable. | Inspect the audio branch, confirm AAC/MP3 settings supported for RTMP(S), and check the YouTube stream-health message. |
