FFmpeg vs OBS for a 24/7 YouTube Channel on a Low-Cost PC in India

FFmpeg often suits a simple prerecorded loop; OBS suits scenes and overlays. Learn how to choose, set YouTube output, test your connection, and plan recovery on a low-cost PC.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a simple loop of prerecorded videos, FFmpeg is often the more practical starting point—if you are comfortable with command-line setup and arranging your own monitoring and restart plan. Choose OBS when you need a visual scene editor, overlays, camera sources, or frequent manual switching, and the PC has enough GPU capacity for scene rendering. Neither program by itself makes a channel reliably 24/7: network stability, stream-health checks, and a recovery plan matter just as much.

This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a performance benchmark. Without a specific PC, source video, operating system, and connection, there is no reliable universal CPU winner or guaranteed resolution for a “low-cost” machine.

Which should you use for a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream?

Need Better starting point Why
A straightforward video file or playlist with minimal processing FFmpeg It can send compatible media to a network output, and stream copy can avoid decoding and re-encoding when the source is suitable.
Scenes, overlays, camera sources, or regular manual changes OBS Its graphical scene and source workflow is easier to manage visually, though compositing and rendering use GPU resources.
A borderline PC or a complex source file Test both on the actual setup Load depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, hardware acceleration, and build—not just the app name.

FFmpeg’s stream-copy path is useful only when the existing encoded video and audio are compatible with the output requirements. It cannot apply filters in that path. Resizing, adding overlays, changing codecs, or mixing content requires filtering and/or transcoding, which adds processing work. The FFmpeg documentation describes its file, network, and capture inputs, stream selection, filtering, encoding, and output options.

OBS is not automatically too demanding for a low-cost PC, but it must composite and render its scene. The OBS Project performance guide advises reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes and sources when rendering is overloaded. Browser sources and filters can add further cost. This is troubleshooting guidance, not a head-to-head benchmark showing FFmpeg always uses less CPU or runs more reliably.

Set a YouTube-compatible output before tuning the PC

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, and AV1 support, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Follow the current settings shown in YouTube Studio for the selected codec and output. YouTube’s table can change, and localized page versions have displayed different bitrate figures, so do not treat an old preset as permanent.

H.264 output listed by YouTube Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s figures in its currently surfaced English encoder-settings guidance, not a promise that a particular PC or connection can sustain them. The same YouTube article also gives a different recommended summary figure for H.264 720p30 and 1080p30; use the current resolution-and-codec table in Studio when configuring your stream rather than combining values from different versions of the page. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Match bitrate to upload capacity, not download speed

The relevant connection speed is the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity with 20% headroom; shared household or office use can reduce what the encoder actually gets. A brief speed-test peak does not prove the link will hold a continuous stream, and YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption could break it. Its streaming tips recommend testing and leaving headroom.

Configure a simple FFmpeg file stream

The following is a starting pattern, not a universal command: the input, codecs, container, and YouTube ingest address must match your media and current Studio stream settings. It assumes a compatible H.264 video and AAC audio file, and copies those streams without transcoding.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  1. Prepare the media. Confirm the file plays correctly, has the intended audio, and uses a format compatible with the chosen YouTube output. Stream copy does not repair incompatible codecs, change resolution, or add filters.
  2. Get the ingest details. In YouTube Studio’s live setup, use the current server/ingest address and stream key. Replace the placeholders in the example with those exact values; do not publish or share the key.
  3. Set and test the output. Use the current YouTube guidance for codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes. Check FFmpeg’s output for errors and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the feed.
  4. Build looping and recovery deliberately. The example repeats one input file. For a playlist, arrange inputs and transitions appropriately for the files and FFmpeg build in use. A running command is not a process supervisor: decide how you will detect a stopped process, restart it, and alert an operator.

FFmpeg has many options whose order and input scope matter. Consult the official FFmpeg documentation for the options appropriate to your media rather than copying a command blindly. Avoid adding transcoding or filters unless needed; they can increase compute demand.

Configure OBS for a low-cost PC

  1. Create only the sources you need. For prerecorded playback, add the media source or sources needed for the planned loop. Avoid unnecessary browser overlays, filters, and animated elements while establishing a stable baseline.
  2. Set a modest output. In OBS, configure the output resolution and frame rate to match what the PC and upload connection can sustain. Then use YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance; begin lower if the machine or link is uncertain.
  3. Set encoder behavior. Match the YouTube ingest requirements, including CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), using the controls available for the encoder you select.
  4. Test rendering and stream health. Check OBS for rendering or encoding overload, and check YouTube Studio’s preview and health indicators. Test with representative motion and audio, not only a static frame.
  5. Reduce load if frames are missed. Lower output resolution or frame rate and simplify scenes and sources, following OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide. Re-test after each meaningful change.

Make the stream recoverable, not merely live

Neither FFmpeg nor OBS alone guarantees recovery from a crash, power loss, or internet interruption. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing failover, and monitoring audio and video quality. For a continuous channel, turn that guidance into an operating plan:

  • Keep the stream key private and store it securely; YouTube describes it as the credential that lets the service accept the feed. See Manage live stream settings.
  • Write down how to restart the encoder and verify that the feed has returned. For unattended use, add process supervision or an equivalent alert-and-restart method appropriate to the operating system.
  • Test the recovery path before depending on it. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet; monitor the preview and stream health during the test.
  • Check audio and video periodically, and confirm the archive and watch-page access where relevant.
  • Consider optional backup power for the PC and router if local power interruptions are a concern. It cannot fix an ISP outage.

YouTube’s live streaming tips describe preflight and monitoring practices. A local encoder cannot protect against every failure in the PC, power supply, router, or ISP connection.

Copyright and channel policy still apply to loops

Using prerecorded material does not make it automatically safe to stream or monetize. Make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other included material, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and channel monetization rules before building a continuous schedule. A technically stable loop can still receive a copyright claim or face policy consequences. Do not assume that repeatedly broadcasting content you did not create is permitted simply because it is available online.

For live ingestion setup, YouTube’s encoder stream guide lists encoder options, including Gyre as a hosted cloud option for prerecorded 24/7 streaming without a dedicated PC. Verify its current price, availability in India, and terms directly before choosing it; those details are not established here.
