Choose FFmpeg if you want to build and operate your own streaming setup; choose a cloud service if you want prerecorded videos to keep playing without a computer or server you manage. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports FFmpeg as a software encoder, and YouTube lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streams. StreamNeo is another cloud option: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream.
The key difference is responsibility. With FFmpeg, you own the host, playback process, monitoring and recovery. A managed service handles cloud playout, though its current controls and terms need checking. Neither approach changes YouTube’s stream-key requirements, encoder recommendations or archive behavior.

How to choose between FFmpeg and cloud streaming
Think about who should operate the stream after setup. FFmpeg is software you run on a computer or server; it gives you control but leaves process management and monitoring to you. A cloud prerecorded-playout service runs the playback in the cloud, reducing the need to keep your own machine in the streaming path. Dedicated hardware is a third route if you prefer a physical encoder.
| Option | Who operates it | Prerecorded scheduling | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg on a computer or server | You manage the host and encoder process. | Depends on your own setup; YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a ready-made looping workflow. | Playback and restart design, monitoring, hosting costs and maintenance. |
| StreamNeo | Cloud service for continuous YouTube playout. | Upload a recording or build a playlist for looping. | Confirm that your source media, storage needs and channel workflow fit. |
| Gyre | YouTube lists it as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams. | Purpose-listed for prerecorded 24/7 streaming. | Current plans, scheduling controls, content limits, support and recovery terms with the provider. |
| AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream | You configure dedicated encoder hardware. | YouTube says PlayToStream can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. | Current price and availability, supported scheduling behaviors, monitoring and restart behavior. |
YouTube’s listings establish the broad operating models, not comparable prices, uptime guarantees or recovery benchmarks. Check current vendor and product terms before buying.

Running a prerecorded stream with FFmpeg
FFmpeg can act as the encoder that sends media to YouTube Live. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. A stable, continuous channel also requires you to arrange how media repeats, how the process is monitored and what happens if the host or connection fails. The sources cited here do not establish a verified, ready-to-run FFmpeg command or a guaranteed restart strategy, so the exact command depends on your files and hosting setup.
- Enable live streaming and prepare the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until immediately before launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your broadcast. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, public log or shared document. Use the secure transport option when available.
- Configure the encoder for your source and connection. Choose a quality your reliable upload capacity can sustain, rather than aiming for a setting your connection only reaches in ideal conditions. Follow YouTube’s codec, bitrate and resolution guidance for the chosen output in its live encoder settings page.
- Test with representative media before the real broadcast. Include motion and audio similar to the content you intend to loop. YouTube advises testing before going live, then checking stream health while the broadcast runs.
- Design operations around failure. You remain responsible for keeping the FFmpeg process and its host running, watching for errors and deciding how to restart or recover. Do not assume YouTube will restart a failed encoder process for you.
Encoder settings that matter on YouTube
Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the output you intend to send; the settings below are platform guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. The official settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; progressive scan; square pixels; and Rec. 709 for SDR. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Consult the page for bitrate and resolution values that match your selected output.

YouTube recommends RTMPS when streaming to YouTube Live. RTMPS is RTMP carried over an SSL connection. If your encoder supports it, prefer RTMPS and keep the stream key private. See Google’s RTMPS delivery guide.

A cloud service takes prerecorded playout out of the hands of a local FFmpeg process, but it does not remove YouTube’s requirements. You still need a YouTube live stream and stream key, suitable source media, and a content-rights basis for what you broadcast. YouTube identifies Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streams. Its listing does not specify current commercial plans, detailed scheduling controls or recovery commitments.

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation shows FFmpeg being used to generate input streams for a cloud processing service. That API is documented for live linear stream transcoding; it should not be confused with a turnkey scheduled prerecorded YouTube channel service. See Google Cloud’s setup documentation and its Live Stream API overview.
For a dedicated physical route, YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. That is different from a hosted cloud service: you operate and configure the hardware, and should verify that its current features support your intended playlist or rotation behavior.

Continuous transmission is not the same as a complete archive
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that an uninterrupted 24/7 stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete recording. If you need an archive, plan separately for how recordings will be captured and retained, and verify the current YouTube behavior for your broadcast format.

Using FFmpeg, a cloud service or dedicated hardware does not grant rights to the videos or music being streamed. Use content you own or are licensed to broadcast, and check YouTube’s live-streaming and copyright rules before scheduling a loop. A continuous format also does not guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization: follow YouTube’s policies on reused and repetitive content and make sure your programming adds value rather than simply rebroadcasting material without permission or meaningful context.

Costs and operating trade-offs
There is no like-for-like price comparison established here for FFmpeg hosting, Gyre and AJA hardware. FFmpeg’s total cost depends on the computer or server, connection, storage and your time maintaining it. A cloud service’s cost and limits depend on its current plan; check the vendor’s terms. Hardware requires a device and ongoing operation. Compare the total effort and responsibility—not just the encoder software or device price.
StreamNeo offers one flat price per slot regardless of uploaded quality, with one always-on YouTube stream, up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Can Google Cloud’s Live Stream API replace a prerecorded-playout service?
Not on the evidence described here: Google documents it for processing and transcoding live linear streams, not as a turnkey scheduled prerecorded YouTube channel.
Does a 24/7 YouTube live stream automatically become one full-length archive?
YouTube’s cited Help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise a complete single archive for a continuous stream longer than that.
