- Decide whether you need automated audio rotation, audiovisual encoding, or both; they may be separate jobs.
- Check whether the system can run unattended and recover after a connection drop.
- Identify where it runs: on a local computer, on a self-managed server, or in a managed cloud service.
- Confirm supported media formats and the exact steps for sending the output to YouTube Live.
- Check current continuous-stream costs and what happens after any free quota. The cited official sources do not settle current provider pricing or every tool’s recovery behavior.
Free local setup: OBS for YouTube, with playlist automation as a separate layer
OBS is a free encoder option, not a documented turnkey 24/7 radio scheduler. Configure the YouTube encoder connection
- Enable live streaming for the YouTube channel in YouTube Studio. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this well before the intended launch.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Enter those values in the encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Keep the stream key private; anyone with it may be able to send video to the channel.
- Set up the audio and visual content in OBS, then connect it to YouTube using the stream URL and key. YouTube’s encoder guidance provides the connection workflow; use current OBS and YouTube instructions for the exact controls, which can change.
- For playlist automation, assign every intended track to at least one AzuraCast playlist. Its documentation says unassigned media will not be played automatically by AutoDJ. Configure rotation or scheduled playlists there, and verify the route from AzuraCast output to the YouTube encoder before launch.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream first. Confirm that audio is present, the visual feed is correct, the playlist advances as expected, and YouTube receives the stream before making it public.
- For a self-hosted AzuraCast installation, expect to administer a Linux server: AzuraCast says installation assumes basic Linux shell knowledge. Its documentation describes the project as in beta, recommends keeping the server updated, and advises maintaining a second copy of station media because updates may cause unexpected issues or data loss.
Rights, copyright checks, and interruptions
YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions require streamers to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants: YouTube Livestream Terms and Conditions. A track being available to buy, download, or play privately does not by itself establish permission to use it in a public, continuous YouTube broadcast.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If a match remains after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. For music licensed from a third party, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. - Ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting before going live with licensed tracks.
- Keep records of permissions and track lists, and prepare a way to stop or replace content if a claim interrupts the stream.
Archives and monetization
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a single complete archive for a 24/7 broadcast. If a full replay matters, make and test a separate archive plan rather than assuming YouTube will preserve the entire continuous stream: YouTube live-stream archiving guidance.
YouTube says live-stream revenue can include ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships; ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Whether a particular channel is eligible, and whether the music rights permit monetization, must be checked for that channel and its licenses: YouTube monetization guidance.
