FFmpeg “Could Not Write Header” When Streaming to YouTube Live: How to Diagnose It

“Could not write header” does not identify the cause by itself. Find the first specific error in FFmpeg’s full log, then check output muxer and stream mapping, YouTube encoder settings, and the ingest URL and key.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg’s “Could not write header” message is a generic output-initialization failure, not a diagnosis. The useful clue is usually the first specific muxer, codec, stream, or network error immediately above it. Check that error first; then verify the output format and mapped streams, YouTube encoder settings, and ingest URL and stream key. Without the full command and log, no single cause or fix can be confirmed.

What “Could not write header” means

FFmpeg writes an output header when it initializes a file or stream. If it cannot initialize the chosen output, it may end with a message such as “Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?).” That final line is too general to identify the cause by itself. Find the first detailed failure above it and note which output stream, codec, muxer, or network operation it names.

A 2019 FFmpeg-user archive example shows the diagnostic pattern: an FLV tag rejects an incompatible output codec before FFmpeg reports the header failure. That is an illustration, not evidence that your command has the same problem. Read the archived FFmpeg-user example.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Capture the complete log. Keep the command and output from the beginning through the first failure, not just the last line. Find the earliest specific error preceding “Could not write header”; later messages may only describe the consequence.
  2. Check output format and stream mapping. Confirm that the selected muxer can carry the codecs and stream types being sent to it. Do not assume every input stream can be copied unchanged into every output format. FFmpeg’s format documentation describes its muxers and includes an RTMP example that writes FLV and explicitly maps video and audio. Its example uses FIFO options; treat it as documentation of mapping and format choices, not a command to copy blindly. Available formats and options can vary with FFmpeg version and build. FFmpeg formats and muxers documentation.
  3. Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Match bitrate guidance to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually selected; the figures below are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a diagnosis of a header error. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  4. Verify the destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that you are using the current ingest URL and stream key for the intended broadcast. If you choose RTMPS, make sure your FFmpeg build and command support it and use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Review the live dashboard for stream-health messages and specific errors. YouTube live streaming error messages; YouTube stream settings; YouTube RTMPS guidance.
  5. If the cause is still unclear, share the diagnostic details safely. Include the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key replaced by [REDACTED], the full unabridged log, FFmpeg version and configuration, input stream metadata, and whether output goes directly over RTMP/RTMPS or through tee, FIFO, or another intermediate.

YouTube settings to check against your actual stream

YouTube’s current English-US live encoder table, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 examples. They are bitrate recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate—not universal values and not proof of why a header failed. Other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations have different rows.

  • Transport: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Check that your encoder supports the protocol you selected.
  • Bitrate mode and frame rate: YouTube lists CBR and frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm the matching bitrate row for your chosen video codec, resolution, and frame rate in the official settings table.

Common diagnostic clues

What you see before the final message What to investigate
A codec or tag incompatibility Whether the chosen output muxer supports the mapped codec and whether the stream needs to be encoded to a compatible codec rather than copied.
A stream or mapping error Which input streams are selected for output and whether each mapped stream is valid for that output.
A URL, connection, or authentication error The RTMP/RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, plus encoder support for the selected protocol. Redact the key before sharing logs.
No specific clue or the log is truncated Capture the full command output and FFmpeg build details; the final header line alone cannot identify the cause.

What not to change without evidence

Do not treat the generic header message as proof YouTube is down, nor assume a bitrate adjustment, new capture card, cable, microphone, or computer will fix it. The correct next step depends on the first detailed error and the command’s actual input, mapping, output format, and destination settings.
