For a prerecorded video sent to a YouTube Live event, start with YouTube’s live-ingest settings: use H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60, target a two-second keyframe interval, and configure the encoder for CBR-style rate control. In GStreamer, that means setting x264enc bitrate to 14000 or 17000 kbps and key-int-max to 60 or 120 frames, respectively. Test the complete pipeline on your machine and monitor YouTube’s stream health; GStreamer describes its x264enc “CBR” mode as ABR, not guaranteed strict constant bitrate.
Recommended x264enc settings for 1080p
YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Its published minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively; those are minimums, not the recommended targets. Use the recommended bitrate if your connection can sustain it.

| Setting | 1080p30 | 1080p60 | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended H.264 video bitrate | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps | Set x264enc bitrate to 14000 or 17000 kilobits per second. |
| Published minimum H.264 video bitrate | 5 Mbps | 6 Mbps | Use only as the stated minimum, not as the recommended target. |
| Recommended keyframe interval | 2 seconds / 60 frames | 2 seconds / 120 frames | Set key-int-max to twice the frame rate. |
| Rate control | CBR recommended | CBR recommended | GStreamer describes x264enc’s CBR mode as ABR; check actual output and YouTube stream health. |
YouTube also says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval. Its figures and recommendations are for live ingestion, even when the content itself was recorded earlier. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Map YouTube’s requirements to GStreamer properties
Bitrate: x264enc uses kilobits per second
The x264enc bitrate property is expressed in kilobits per second. For the YouTube recommendations, use bitrate=14000 at 1080p30 or bitrate=17000 at 1080p60. These are video bitrate targets; budget additional upload capacity for audio and transport overhead, and leave headroom for network variation rather than planning around an uplink that only just matches the video target.

Rate-control mode matters. In x264enc’s CBR mode, the target bitrate determines quality, but GStreamer documents that mode as “actually ABR.” Do not assume the setting guarantees a perfectly constant output rate. Confirm how your installed version and complete pipeline behave. In constant-quantizer or constant-quality modes, the bitrate setting instead acts as a maximum, so those modes do not serve the same purpose as targeting YouTube’s recommended live bitrate.
Keyframes: convert seconds to frames
The key-int-max property sets the maximum distance between keyframes in frames; zero means automatic. Multiply the actual frame rate by the desired interval in seconds:

If your source is not 30 or 60 fps, calculate the frame distance from its actual frame rate and consult YouTube’s corresponding frame-rate guidance. Do not copy a frame count from a different rate. The four-second limit is a maximum recommendation, not a reason to lengthen the two-second target.

x264enc offers speed presets, but there is no universally correct preset for every computer, source, and pipeline. Choose one that lets encoding keep up with the intended resolution and frame rate, then test the entire stream with representative motion and audio. Presets and tuning choices establish defaults before explicitly set properties are applied, so inspect the resulting configuration rather than assuming defaults remain unchanged. The GStreamer x264enc documentation describes these properties and behavior.

Should you use tune=zerolatency?
Not automatically. Prerecorded input does not by itself require a low-latency encoder setting. GStreamer warns that x264enc can buffer frames and add latency; in complex pipelines, that latency can fill queues on other branches and stall the pipeline. It notes that queue limits may need to be increased or a multiqueue used.
tune=zerolatency is one possible workaround when encoder delay is a problem, but it affects encoding quality. The GStreamer tutorial characterizes it as a lower-quality option more suitable for live-streaming scenarios. Use it only when reducing delay is more important than the quality trade-off for your broadcast, and compare the result against a configuration without it.

Build and verify the stream for your actual pipeline
There is no single complete GStreamer command that is correct for every input format, audio source, muxer, transport, and YouTube ingest workflow. The encoder settings below are the relevant starting values, not a substitute for the rest of a working pipeline:

- Use the appropriate YouTube Live ingest path and stream key in your own pipeline; the encoder properties alone do not create or authenticate a YouTube broadcast.
- Check the installed element and available properties with
gst-inspect-1.0 x264enc. GStreamer behavior can vary by release and build. - Match the encoding resolution and frame rate to the intended 1080p broadcast and source. If the source has a different frame rate, use that actual rate when setting
key-int-max. - Run the complete pipeline with representative movement and audio, not just a static test frame.
- Confirm the encoder keeps pace and the uplink sustains the selected video bitrate with room for audio and overhead.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback during the test, then address any bitrate, dropped-frame, or connection warnings before relying on the setup.
GStreamer’s network-streaming example includes x264enc tune=zerolatency key-int-max=15 alongside RTP elements. That example demonstrates encoder properties in a different network context; its 15-frame interval is not YouTube’s 1080p recommendation and it is not a complete YouTube RTMP pipeline. See the GStreamer multithreading tutorial for the example and its context.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports insufficient bitrate: Check that the chosen x264enc value is in kilobits per second, that the rate-control mode is targeting the intended bitrate, and that the uplink can sustain the video rate plus audio and transport overhead. Do not treat YouTube’s published minimum as the recommended target.
- Keyframes are too far apart: Set
key-int-maxusing the actual frame rate. For 30 fps use 60 for two seconds; for 60 fps use 120. A value of zero leaves the interval automatic. - The pipeline stalls after starting: Encoder buffering can exceed the capacity of a simple queue in a multi-branch pipeline. Review queue limits or consider a multiqueue, then test again. Enabling zerolatency may reduce delay but trades away encoding quality.
- The encoder cannot keep up: Test a faster preset on the target machine and verify performance using the full-resolution, full-frame-rate pipeline. A setting that works on a short or simpler test may not keep pace with representative content.
- The stream looks worse after enabling zerolatency: That quality cost is an expected trade-off of the tuning option. Disable it unless the reduction in delay is necessary, or compare alternative queue and pipeline configurations.
- The configured rate does not look constant: GStreamer identifies x264enc’s CBR mode as ABR. Verify actual output and YouTube’s stream-health status instead of inferring strict constant-rate behavior from the mode name.
