Use the concat filter when you need to re-encode or normalize inputs into a consistent output. Neither choice, by itself, keeps a YouTube broadcast running continuously: encoder settings, upload capacity, and stream-health monitoring are separate requirements.
Demuxer or filter: which should you choose?

The right choice depends on the media files, not on whether the destination is a 24/7 stream. The FFmpeg FAQ discusses the filter for concatenation where re-encoding is needed and the demuxer for avoiding re-encoding when file-level concatenation is not supported. When the concat demuxer is the better fit
Choose the demuxer if every file has the same stream layout, codecs, and time bases, and you want to pass packets through without re-encoding. It uses a text file as a playlist. For example, save this as playlist.txt:

file 'video-03.mp4'Then feed the script to FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy OUTPUT_OPTIONSOUTPUT_OPTIONS is a placeholder, not a literal FFmpeg option: replace it with the output format, destination, and any required live-ingest settings for your workflow. For YouTube, configure the encoder and destination separately; the concat demuxer does not set those for you.

Check compatibility before relying on stream copy
- Compare the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases. Different layouts or incompatible parameters can prevent clean concatenation without conversion.
- Check duration metadata. The demuxer uses duration information to determine timestamps for the next file. An inaccurate duration can produce artifacts or gaps.
- If a stored duration is wrong, the concat script supports a
durationdirective to override it. Verify the resulting transitions; an override is not a substitute for testing. - Test the exact sequence and output before a long broadcast. A successful start does not establish that all later file boundaries will be clean.

When to use the concat filter
Use the filter when your playlist inputs need re-encoding to make a consistent output. Unlike the demuxer’s packet-copy approach, a filter workflow decodes, processes, and encodes media. That can accommodate normalization work, but it requires an encoding configuration and enough system capacity to sustain it continuously.

A filter-based workflow is not a universal fix for arbitrary files: confirm the filter’s input requirements and output mapping for your installed FFmpeg version, then test the actual files. This comparison does not prescribe a single filter command because stream layout, codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio, and live destination vary by playlist.

The concat demuxer presents the listed files once; it does not turn the list into an endless loop. For a continuous local FFmpeg process, use FFmpeg’s input-loop option on the concat input, for example:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy OUTPUT_OPTIONSThis only repeats the input sequence. It does not guarantee a 24/7 broadcast: the process, computer, network connection, and YouTube ingest must continue working. If stream-copy compatibility fails, use an appropriate filter and encoding workflow instead, then validate the output.

The concat method determines how FFmpeg joins source files. YouTube ingest settings determine how the live output is transmitted. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds and no more than four seconds, AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS to encrypt data to and through Google’s servers. These are YouTube recommendations, not settings supplied automatically by either concat method. Check the YouTube Live encoder settings before configuring a stream because platform guidance can change.

Before going live
- Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends matching the selected stream quality to the available upload connection.
- Configure the encoder with CBR, the recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS, using the current YouTube settings guidance.
- Run a preflight test with the real playlist and intended output settings. Check file transitions as well as startup.
- During the broadcast, monitor stream health and review YouTube’s messages. YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions, but that does not remove the need to watch the ingest stream.

Troubleshooting playlist broadcasts
- The demuxer refuses or mishandles a file: Check whether all files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If they do not, use a filter workflow that re-encodes to a consistent output.
- There is a gap, timestamp jump, or artifact at a boundary: Check duration metadata for the files around that transition. The demuxer uses durations to place later timestamps; correct the metadata or use the script’s
durationdirective where appropriate, then retest. - The playlist plays once and stops: A concat script lists files sequentially but does not loop by itself. Use an input loop such as
-stream_loop -1and confirm the process remains running. - YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast drops: Check available upload capacity, encoder settings, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and the connection. A correct file-concatenation method cannot resolve an ingest or network issue.
- It works on one machine but not another: FFmpeg documentation tracks the newest revision, while installed builds can differ. Consult documentation for the installed build and verify the command and filter behavior locally.
