A regular YouTube playlist does not, by itself, become a livestream. The rotation, restart behavior, and recovery have to be configured in the tool sending the video.
What you need for a rotating 24/7 stream
YouTube Live receives a video feed from an encoder, which can be software or standalone hardware. For prerecorded nature footage, the encoder or cloud service must also handle the video rotation. YouTube’s setup guidance explains how to create and connect an encoder stream; it does not prescribe playlist automation or guarantee how a particular tool handles looping and restarts. A normal channel playlist is for organizing and playing videos on YouTube; it is not a live feed that automatically rotates through those videos. Choose a tool that can send the prepared videos continuously, and test its playlist behavior before scheduling a public broadcast.
Prepare the seasonal video library
Confirm rights for every clip and soundtrack
Before assembling the rotation, check that you have permission to livestream and archive each video and every audio track. Keep records of ownership, licenses, permitted territories, and any restrictions. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions require necessary rights for use of live content on Google services, including applicable music rights.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party content may still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Archived livestreams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions and arrange allowlisting with the rights owner when applicable.
Organize files for reliable playback
Group footage by season, location, or mood, then set an intentional order—for example, spring forest, summer meadow, autumn rain, and winter snow. Check that the selected encoder accepts each file and that clips play through without missing media. The exact supported formats and transition options depend on the tool you choose.

Decide whether the rotation should use hard cuts or transitions, whether clips contain audio, and what should happen at the end of the playlist. Normalize or balance audio levels where needed, and listen to the handoffs. Confirm behavior when a file is unavailable or playback reaches the end of the list; do not assume every encoder loops in the same way.

Choose how to send the rotation to YouTube
Local software encoder
A software encoder on a computer can send the feed directly to YouTube. This keeps the workflow under your control, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain operational for the stream to continue. Check the software’s playlist, looping, restart, and reconnect behavior for your intended schedule.

Dedicated hardware encoder
Standalone hardware is an option for a fixed installation or a more advanced production setup. It is not required: YouTube supports software encoders as well. Confirm that a device supports your inputs and can provide the playlist rotation you need before buying it.
Cloud service
A cloud encoder can run the video feed without relying on a computer at home. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory is useful for discovering services, but it is not a ranking or a guarantee that a vendor’s features, pricing, or support match your needs. The directory names AWS Elemental MediaLive and describes Gyre as a service for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. Verify current capabilities and costs directly with the provider.

When comparing tools, check whether playlist rotation is actually automated, how the service handles recovery and failover, what happens at archive and restart boundaries, which inputs it supports, how monitoring works, and the total cost of the setup.
Set up the YouTube livestream
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream for encoder software. Scheduling can help promote the event and let viewers set reminders. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup steps for the available controls.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the connection. Treat the key as a password: it directs the encoder to your stream and authorizes YouTube to accept the feed. Do not share it publicly; reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Load and configure the seasonal playlist. Add the prepared clips in the desired order in the selected encoder or cloud tool. Set looping and transitions if available, then verify the end-of-list and missing-file behavior. YouTube’s basic setup does not configure these tool-specific playlist options.
- Check the preview before going public. Confirm that the Live Control Room receives a picture and audio, that the correct stream is selected, and that the opening clip and playlist order are right. Check the public watch page and access from a mobile device as part of your launch test.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Keep an operator or monitoring process available to catch interruptions, audio problems, or a playlist that stops advancing. YouTube recommends monitoring both audio and video in its livestreaming tips.
Plan bandwidth, recovery, and archives
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom beyond the total bitrate of the stream. Treat this as a planning recommendation, not a promise of uninterrupted service. Measure available outbound capacity under realistic conditions and account for other devices or traffic using the same connection. See YouTube’s network and livestreaming tips.

Test failover and reconnection
Network disruption or an encoder failure can interrupt a broadcast. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover; if your setup has a backup, test the transition before relying on it. Also verify whether the selected encoder or service reconnects automatically and what viewers see during a disruption. No setup removes the need to check that recovery works as intended.
Understand automatic archiving
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an automatic-archive condition, not a stated maximum livestream duration. For a continuous channel, plan session boundaries and test how your tool starts the next session, how the archive is divided, and what viewers experience during a restart. Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube receives no video: Confirm that the encoder is running and using the correct stream URL and key, then check the Live Control Room preview. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The stream starts but the playlist does not rotate: Check that playlist playback and looping are configured in the encoder or service itself. YouTube does not turn an ordinary channel playlist into a live rotation.
- Playback stops at the end of the list: Verify the tool’s end-of-playlist behavior and enable looping if supported. Test a full cycle before scheduling the broadcast.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check the outbound connection and whether it has YouTube’s recommended headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Test reconnection or backup-encoder failover rather than assuming it will work.
- A live stream is interrupted despite a license: Ask the rights owner whether the channel needs a Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption.
- The archive is missing or split unexpectedly: Check the session length and restart plan. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; confirm archive boundaries with your chosen workflow.
- Audio is silent, uneven, or out of sync: Check the source files and encoder preview, then monitor audio and video during a test broadcast before relying on the rotation.
