To loop a prerecorded video into a YouTube live stream with FFmpeg, send it at real-time speed with -re, loop the input with -stream_loop -1, encode H.264 video and AAC audio, and publish to the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is a 1080p30 starting point; adjust its bitrate and keyframe interval to match your actual output and YouTube’s current settings.

FFmpeg command for a looping YouTube stream

Replace input.mp4 with your video file and replace the destination with the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"

This example is intended for a 30 fps output, with stereo AAC audio. It does not resize the video or convert its frame rate. Its 4,500 Kbps video target is only a conservative example—not YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 target. Choose your video bitrate based on the output resolution and frame rate, and confirm the file’s streams and frame rate before relying on the command. The example has not been tested against your particular file, FFmpeg build, channel, or network.

What the options do

  • -re reads the file at its native frame rate instead of sending it as fast as the encoder can process it. That is appropriate when replaying a file as a live stream.
  • -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so keep it before -i. It repeats the file; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or restore a failed network connection.
  • -c:v libx264 selects FFmpeg’s H.264 encoder. -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set the video rate-control target and limits. The example uses a two-second buffer value relative to its target bitrate.
  • -preset veryfast trades some encoding efficiency for lower encoding load. If the machine cannot encode in real time, a faster preset may help, at the cost of compression efficiency; a slower preset can require more processing capacity.
  • -g 60 sets a maximum GOP size of 60 frames, while -keyint_min 60 sets the minimum keyframe interval and -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-change keyframes. At 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds. If your output frame rate differs, set it deliberately and recalculate the GOP to roughly two seconds of frames.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a widely compatible pixel format for H.264 playback and ingest.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Those are YouTube’s published recommendations for stereo AAC audio.
  • -f flv selects the FLV muxer commonly used for RTMP-family streaming. The destination uses RTMPS, the encrypted RTMP option YouTube recommends.

Set bitrate and keyframes for your actual stream

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its published H.264 video recommendations include these resolution and frame-rate targets:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
4K30 11 Mbps 42 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations for the listed ingest resolution and frame rate, not a promise that a particular connection can sustain them. Use the row matching your intended output, then ensure your upload connection has stable headroom above the total stream bitrate. YouTube also publishes guidance for AV1 and H.265; check its live settings page for current recommendations before deployment because platform guidance can change.

The sample command does not specify -r, so it preserves the source’s frame rate. If you choose to convert frame rate, specify an output frame rate and set -g and -keyint_min accordingly. For example, 60 frames gives a two-second interval at 30 fps but only one second at 60 fps.

Prepare YouTube and start the stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to obtain the server URL and stream key.
  2. Replace rtmps://SERVER/STREAM_KEY with the RTMPS destination values for your stream. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to that stream.
  3. Run the command and check the YouTube preview and stream health. Test with audio and movement representative of the content you plan to broadcast before treating it as production-ready.
  4. Monitor the FFmpeg process, host, network connection, and source. The infinite loop handles only input repetition; it is not a process supervisor, failover system, or guarantee of uninterrupted connectivity.

Check the source file and handle special cases

The command assumes the input has usable timestamps and a video stream plus audio that can be encoded as stereo AAC. Inspect the file before streaming if its properties are uncertain; its dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, available encoders in your FFmpeg build, and your sustained upload capacity all affect the settings you should use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the source has no audio, do not assume looping the video creates an audio stream. A silent stream or separately supplied music requires an explicit continuous audio input and a filter or mapping setup appropriate to that choice. Likewise, a still image or unusual timestamp pattern may need a different input/filter configuration; the title does not specify which case applies.

Copyright, monetization, and long broadcasts

Looping a file does not grant rights to its video or audio. Use content you own or are licensed to broadcast, and consider YouTube’s copyright rules before making a long-running stream public. Repeated or reused material can also affect a channel’s monetization eligibility; eligibility depends on YouTube’s current policies and the channel’s content, not on the FFmpeg command.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Do not assume that one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will produce a complete archive. Plan separately for the stream’s duration and any recording or archive needs.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: check that the server URL and stream key are copied correctly, that the key belongs to the selected stream, and that the destination uses RTMPS. Avoid sharing the key publicly.
  • The stream buffers or drops frames: compare the configured video and audio bitrates with the upload connection’s sustained capacity. Use the matching YouTube resolution/frame-rate recommendation and leave network headroom; a connection that only intermittently reaches the target is not sufficient.
  • FFmpeg exits at the end of the file: confirm -stream_loop -1 appears before -i and that the input file is readable. This option repeats one input, not a playlist of multiple files.
  • Video looks wrong or the GOP interval is unsuitable: check the actual output frame rate. The sample’s 60-frame interval is two seconds only at 30 fps; choose the GOP size based on the encoded output rate.
  • Audio is missing or rejected: verify that the source has an audio stream and that the chosen mapping is valid. The example encodes available input audio to AAC, but it does not synthesize audio for a silent file.
  • The process stops and the broadcast ends: looping is not automatic recovery from an FFmpeg crash, host shutdown, or network outage. A production 24/7 setup needs monitoring and a way to restart or recover the process; YouTube stream health should also be checked during a representative test.

Or let it run in the cloud
