A playlist only sets playback order; it does not convert the files or make an unsupported codec playable. Test the files on the actual destination first, then convert only the streams that destination cannot handle.
Why mixed codecs can cause playback problems
Each video file contains one or more streams, such as video, audio, and subtitles, inside a container. The player must support the relevant codecs, stream properties, and container to play them. Compatibility can vary by player, operating system or build, device, and the particular files; a codec name alone does not establish that a file will work.

A playlist—whether it is a simple local list or another ordering file—does not change those streams. A file that plays on your computer may still fail on a TV or another receiving device.

1. Identify where the playlist will play
Write down the target player or app, operating system or device model, intended container, and whether playback is local, on a TV, or streamed. Check the destination’s current supported-format documentation before selecting a conversion format. Without a named target, there is no universal audio codec that can be promised to work.

2. Inventory representative files
In VLC, open a file and choose Tools → Codec Information to view the codecs used. VLC’s Desktop User Documentation 3.0 describes this view; menu labels can differ in other releases. You can also use FFmpeg’s stream-probing options to inspect files. Record each file’s name, container, video codec, audio codec, channel layout, and subtitles or alternate audio tracks if those matter to you.
FFmpeg’s documentation explains that transcoding decodes and then encodes a stream again. It also notes that FFmpeg transcodes audio, video, and subtitle streams unless you specify -c copy for them. Those distinctions matter when deciding what to preserve.

3. Try the playlist unchanged
Add representative files from each audio-codec group to the playlist and play it on the intended device—not just the computer used to create the playlist. Check that audio is present and in sync, that the channel layout sounds right, and that seeking and transitions between files work. If every file works, no conversion is necessary.
Choose the smallest conversion that fixes the problem
| Method | What changes | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stream copy | Copies selected streams without re-encoding them. | When the target accepts the existing codecs and you only need to remux or otherwise copy compatible streams. | Fast and avoids re-encoding, but cannot change a codec the target rejects. The chosen container must support the streams. |
| Convert audio only | Decodes and re-encodes the audio while copying compatible video. | When the target rejects the audio but accepts the video and the output container supports the streams. | Leaves video untouched, but audio is re-encoded and may change in quality. Confirm the output audio format with the target’s supported-format guidance. |
| Transcode other affected streams | Re-encodes the video, audio, or other streams that the target cannot handle. | When a video codec, container-related constraint, or other stream also causes incompatibility. | Provides more control over compatibility, but takes processing time and re-encoding may change quality. |
Keep the originals. Before batch conversion, make one representative output and check audio presence, sync, channel handling, subtitles and alternate tracks, seeking, and playlist transitions on the actual destination. The necessary settings depend on that destination and the source files; there is no substantiated one-size-fits-all codec setting for an unspecified device.

For HLS, use a streaming manifest—not just a local playlist
A local playlist and an HLS multivariant playlist are different artifacts. Apple’s Creating a Multivariant Playlist guidance describes the CODECS attribute as a comma-separated list of formats present in media segments and says it provides the formats necessary to decode a particular stream. Ensure declarations match the actual segments and variants. Do not assume a local M3U-style list is an HLS manifest without confirming its structure.
