Convert ProRes to an MP4 with H.264 video and compatible AAC audio to create a smaller upload for YouTube. Start by checking the source resolution, frame rate, color (SDR or HDR), and audio tracks; then choose output settings for your intended size and viewing quality. There is no universal compression ratio: file size and results depend on the footage and encoding choices.
Why convert ProRes to MP4?
ProRes is designed for editing workflows and can produce large files. Apple’s April 2022 white paper describes ProRes workflows for full-frame 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 footage across HD, 2K, 4K, 6K, 8K, and larger source contexts. That range describes supported workflows, not a guaranteed file size or compression saving. Apple ProRes white paper

For a YouTube upload, YouTube recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video and lists AAC-LC among its audio options. An MP4 is a container; H.264 is the video codec inside it. Choosing these settings can make a ProRes file more practical to upload, but the resulting size and visual quality vary with duration, resolution, frame rate, content, and encoder settings.
Check the ProRes source before encoding
Use your editing application or a media-information utility to identify the source properties before choosing an export. Do not assume that every ProRes file has the same picture, color, or audio characteristics.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy and fast conversion without a loss of quality
- Support of all the common video and audio formats
- Including a variety of helpful editing tools
- Support of more than 130 file formats, more than 40 presets for various devices (Smartphones, Smart TVs)
- Compatible with Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 7
- Resolution: Note the frame dimensions and decide whether the upload should retain them or use a smaller output.
- Frame rate: Note the rate used during recording. YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at that same rate.
- Color: Determine whether the footage is SDR or HDR. The color workflow differs, so do not apply an SDR conversion blindly to HDR footage.
- Audio: Check which tracks are present and which one should be included in the upload.
- Duration: The longer the video, the larger the output at a given average bitrate.
Choose output settings for YouTube
YouTube’s upload guidance is a useful starting point, not a promise of a particular file size or visual result. Its bitrate references vary by resolution and frame-rate class. The figures below apply to SDR uploads at standard frame rates; consult YouTube’s current table for other resolutions and high-frame-rate footage.
| SDR output | YouTube bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p, standard frame rate | 8 Mbps |
| 2160p, standard frame rate | 35–45 Mbps |
These are recommendations published on YouTube’s help page, whose publication date is not stated, rather than required minimums. Use the resolution and frame-rate class that match your intended upload, and weigh file size against the quality you need. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR uploads, describes handling for unsupported color spaces, and directs HDR workflows to separate guidance. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings

Convert with HandBrake
HandBrake provides Creator presets intended for videos being prepared for hosting services such as YouTube. A preset is a starting point, not proof that one configuration is optimal for every ProRes source. HandBrake official presets
- Open the source: Load the ProRes file and verify that HandBrake shows the expected duration and picture.
- Choose a Creator preset: Select one that suits the intended resolution and frame-rate needs. Check what the preset selects rather than assuming it preserves every source property.
- Review the picture and video settings: Confirm output dimensions and frame rate. Keep the recorded frame rate unless you have a deliberate reason to change it. Choose a quality or bitrate setting that matches your size-quality goal.
- Review audio: Select the intended source track and a YouTube-compatible audio format, such as AAC-LC.
- Check color handling: Keep SDR and HDR workflows distinct. For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709; follow YouTube’s separate HDR guidance for HDR footage.
- Set the destination and encode: Save the output as an MP4, start the encode, and wait for it to finish before checking the file.
Convert with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a command-line option when you want configurable encoding or repeatable batch jobs. Its documentation describes encoder options, but the cited documentation does not establish a tested ProRes-to-H.264 recipe or a best setting for every source. Verify your installed FFmpeg build and inspect the input streams before choosing options. FFmpeg documentation

- Prism can convert popular formats like WMV, MP4, AVI, MOV, MPG, VOB, ASF, and all video formats that have a DirectShow based codec
- Add video effects such as watermarks, text overlay, filters, and video rotation
- Easily drag and drop video files or choose a whole folder
- Preview your video and any changes made to it before conversion
- Adjustable output settings
- Inspect the input: Use an input-inspection tool such as
ffprobeto check the video dimensions, frame rate, color characteristics, duration, and audio streams. - Choose the output target: Decide whether to preserve resolution and recording frame rate, and choose a target bitrate or quality-based setting according to your size-quality goal.
- Configure the encode: Set H.264 video, an MP4 output, and compatible audio such as AAC-LC. Avoid copying settings from an unrelated source without checking their effect on your footage.
- Run and inspect: Encode to a new file, then check playback, sound, duration, and color before uploading.
FFmpeg exposes many encoder choices; the right ones depend on the installed build and the source. Consult the documentation for the options supported by your encoder rather than treating an example command as universal.

Check the MP4 before uploading
Play the exported file from beginning to end, or at least inspect representative sections and the start and end. Confirm that the image, sound, duration, and color are as intended. A successful encode alone does not establish that the export preserved the properties you care about.

- If the picture looks soft or shows encoding artifacts, reconsider the resolution, bitrate or quality setting, and the complexity of the footage.
- If the frame cadence looks wrong, check that the output frame rate matches the recording rate.
- If the color looks different, revisit the SDR or HDR handling and the selected color space.
- If audio is missing or incorrect, confirm the selected input track and output audio settings.
Troubleshooting common conversion problems
The MP4 is still too large
Check the output duration, resolution, frame rate, and chosen bitrate or quality setting. A high-resolution or long video can remain large even after conversion. Reduce the output resolution or bitrate only if the resulting quality is acceptable for your intended viewing.

Check whether the bitrate or quality setting is too low for the resolution, frame rate, and visual complexity. Compare the export with the original in motion as well as on a still frame; adjust settings and encode again if needed.

The frame rate or motion looks wrong
Compare the source and output frame rates. YouTube recommends encoding at the rate used during recording. Change it only when your project has a deliberate reason to do so.
Color changes after conversion
Confirm whether the source is SDR or HDR and review its color handling. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR and provides separate HDR instructions; an SDR setting should not be applied indiscriminately to HDR footage.
Audio is missing or on the wrong track
Reopen the source settings and confirm which audio stream is selected. Export a compatible audio track, such as AAC-LC, and check playback before upload.
Or let it run in the cloud
Converting a file creates an upload-ready video; it does not keep a YouTube live stream running. If your goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer can be off.
