Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The app implied by the headline is probably Fermata Auto: its publisher describes it as a broader media app with a built-in browser that can access YouTube. That is an inference, not a confirmed identification, and the feature descriptions come from the publisher rather than independent testing. Fermata Auto is a sideloaded third-party option—not an officially documented way to watch YouTube video on Android Auto.
What is the app, and what can it do?
The headline does not name an app. Fermata Auto is the strongest match because its publisher describes both media playback and a built-in browser; the same publisher characterizes CarStream as more narrowly focused on YouTube. The distinction matters: Fermata Auto is presented as a wider media-and-browser package, while CarStream is presented as a simpler YouTube-oriented option.

According to the AAAD publisher’s July 6, 2026 comparison, Fermata Auto supports local files, IPTV, network storage, and web browsing, including access to YouTube. These are publisher descriptions, not independently verified results, and they do not establish that every feature works on every phone, Android Auto release, or vehicle display. The publisher also describes AABrowser as a browser route offered through its web app.

Google’s Android Auto help describes listening to media such as music and podcasts through car speakers, and says media apps must be compatible with Android Auto. Its example voice command is “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.” That refers to YouTube Music audio; it does not document general YouTube video playback projected onto an Android Auto screen. Google’s media guidance is the relevant distinction to keep in mind.

Google’s May 2025 announcement about video and browser app categories discusses parked-use experiences for cars with Google built-in. Google built-in is based on Android Automotive OS, which runs in some cars; Android Auto projects a phone interface to a compatible car. The announcement should not be read as a broad approval of video apps on projected Android Auto. Google’s announcement covers the built-in-car context.
How do Fermata Auto, CarStream, and AABrowser differ?
| Option | Publisher-described approach | Distribution/setup distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Fermata Auto | Broader media and browser features, including local files, IPTV, network storage, and browser access to YouTube, according to the AAAD publisher. | Described as an APK-based sideloaded app, not an official Google distribution channel. |
| CarStream | YouTube-focused option, described by the publisher as simpler than Fermata Auto. | Described as an APK-based sideloaded app, not an official Google distribution channel. |
| AABrowser | Browser alternative described by the publisher as a web-app route. | Publisher describes it as accessed through its web app rather than the same APK-based route. |
The comparison is about the publisher’s stated scope and setup, not a guarantee of current availability, successful installation, or equivalent behavior. Google says developers must follow its Android Auto and Android Automotive policies and Google Play policies; that policy framework does not amount to Google’s approval of a particular sideloaded app. See Google’s Android Auto and Android Automotive policies.

What should you check before trying a sideloaded app?
- Your exact configuration: check the Android version, Android Auto version, phone model, car head unit, and current app release. The compatibility recommendations published by AAAD can change and are not an independent cross-device test.
- Installation route: distinguish installing an APK from using a publisher-described browser/web-app approach. A third-party installer or app publisher is not an official Google distribution channel.
- Current behavior: Android and Android Auto updates can affect sideloaded apps and their workarounds. AAAD’s comparison reports changing version recommendations and restrictions; those claims are time-sensitive, not a universal compatibility promise.
- Use while parked: only consider video when the vehicle is legally and safely parked. Check local law and your vehicle’s guidance; the cited Google pages do not settle rules for every jurisdiction.
AAAD’s separate guide says its editorial team tested a Pixel 7 Pro running Android 16. That is the publisher’s report about one configuration, not independently verified or representative evidence for other phones, cars, or releases. It does not establish current compatibility for your setup.
Is an adapter required?
No adapter is established as a requirement. AAAD mentions an AAWireless dongle in the context of a workaround some users employ, but it is optional and is not a guaranteed fix for sideloaded-app restrictions or compatibility problems. The evidence does not support treating it as a necessary purchase.

Can you watch Netflix or use YouTube Music without AAAD?
The cited sources do not establish Netflix playback in Fermata Auto or CarStream, so neither should be treated as a confirmed Netflix solution. YouTube Music is a separate case: Google lists it as an example of an Android Auto-compatible audio service, and its help page shows a voice command for playing an artist. That official audio use does not require interpreting YouTube video playback as supported.
