The Winix C909 is a strong particle-focused air purifier for people who want app control and automatic operation, but it is large, its coverage figures depend on the source and test method, and its thin carbon filter is not a fix for persistent odors. Independent testing by RTINGS found substantial particle-cleaning output, including at a quieter setting. It is a better fit for a sizable room and routine particle reduction than for odor control or buyers short on floor space.
What the Winix C909 offers
Winix describes the C909 as a four-stage purifier with a washable fine-mesh pre-filter, an activated-carbon filter, a True HEPA filter, and PlasmaWave technology. It also has Wi-Fi app control, air-quality sensors, and an automatic mode that adjusts fan speed. RTINGS identifies it as a Costco-exclusive model; Costco lists the unit as model 1022-0228-00.

The controls and filtration make the C909 a full-size room purifier rather than a compact desktop unit. Its strongest case is particle cleaning with the option to automate fan adjustments. The less compelling parts of the proposition are its footprint, the limits of the carbon sheet for odors, and the recurring filter upkeep.

The coverage numbers are not interchangeable: Winix and Costco provide product or retailer room-size figures, while RTINGS reports its own measured output and room-size recommendations under a stated test approach.

For a quiet-room decision, the speed-2 result is the more relevant RTINGS figure; for maximum output, use its maximum-speed result. In either case, compare the room you intend to use with the figure for the operating condition you expect. Winix itself cautions that room conditions affect improvement, so no single square-foot number guarantees a particular result in every layout.
How well does it clean particles, and how noisy is it?
RTINGS characterizes the C909’s particle filtration rate as strong and says much of its cleaning performance remains at lower fan speeds. That is useful because a purifier that is tolerable at a lower setting is more practical for continuous use than one that only performs well at full blast.

RTINGS reports noise from 33.1 dBA at the lowest fan speed to 53.9 dBA at the highest. These are reviewer measurements across the fan range; the louder maximum setting trades acoustic comfort for the greatest output. The published low-noise speed-2 test paired 337 m³/hr (198 CFM) with a 310 sq ft recommendation, so that result offers a more specific reference for balancing noise and coverage than the maximum-speed figure alone.
Will it help with odors?
RTINGS says the C909’s carbon sheet is unlikely to make a significant difference with persistent or heavy odors. Treat the activated-carbon stage as a limited odor-control feature, not a substitute for addressing the source of strong smells or choosing a purifier with a more substantial odor-filter design.

What should you know about PlasmaWave?
PlasmaWave is optional and can be switched off. Winix reports an 8-hour time-weighted-average ozone result of 1.12 ppbv in a 30 m³ chamber on its product page, and directs owners to the manual’s safety instructions. That is a manufacturer-reported chamber result; it should not be read as a universal measurement for every room or operating condition. If ionization is a concern or you prefer not to use it, disable PlasmaWave and consult the C909 manual.
Does the C909 fit your space?
Winix lists the unit at approximately 16.5 × 11.3 × 23.2 inches and 17.2 pounds; Costco lists dimensions of 11.4 × 16.5 × 23.2 inches. These are listing specifications, not independent measurements. RTINGS describes the purifier as bulky but notes that its narrow profile can fit against a wall. Measure the intended location, including clearance for airflow and access to controls, rather than judging by room coverage alone.

Winix lists 95 W and a two-year warranty for its standard product listing; Costco gives the same two-year manufacturer’s warranty. These figures are seller specifications, not independent measurements. Confirm warranty and package details with the seller for the specific unit being purchased.
How often do the filters need attention?
The maintenance schedule in the C909 manual separates cleaning from replacement. The HEPA indicator monitors the HEPA filter; it does not remove the need to track carbon-filter changes yourself.

- Every 14 days: clean the permanent fine-mesh pre-filter.
- Every three months: replace the activated-carbon filter.
- Approximately every 12 months: replace the True HEPA filter. The manual says intervals can vary by environment.
The manual names genuine Filter A, SKU 115115, for replacement. Confirm that a replacement is compatible with the C909 before ordering, and keep a separate reminder for carbon changes. See the C909 manual for maintenance instructions.

Bundle contents differ between Winix’s current product listing and Costco’s listing; check the live offer rather than assuming all C909 packages include the same supply.

Is the Winix C909 worth choosing?
The C909 is a reasonable shortlist choice if particle reduction, app control, automatic fan adjustment, and strong output at both high and lower fan speeds matter more than compact size or intensive odor removal. The RTINGS measurements give more useful context than relying on room-size claims alone: its maximum-speed and speed-2 results describe different output and coverage trade-offs.
