Short answer: Fedora is a fast-moving Linux desktop with two scheduled releases each year. Fedora Linux 44 is the current stable release identified in the supplied release announcements (April 28, 2026); Fedora Linux 45 was still a beta on September 15, 2026, so a beta build should not be treated as the normal stable installation. Keep Fedora current with GNOME Software, KDE Discover or DNF, and plan a release upgrade at least annually. Official repositories cover software that meets Fedora’s licensing and maintenance rules; Flatpaks and carefully selected third-party repositories fill many gaps, especially for multimedia codecs and proprietary hardware drivers.

What Fedora desktop is, and why its release schedule matters

Fedora Workstation is a general-purpose Linux desktop built around current kernels, desktop environments and developer tools. Its development model is schedule-based: Fedora targets two major releases per year, generally in late April and late October. That cadence gives you newer hardware support and applications sooner than a long-term-support distribution, but it also means you must treat upgrades as routine maintenance rather than a once-in-several-years project.

Fedora Linux 44 was announced on April 28, 2026. Fedora Linux 45 was announced as a beta on September 15, 2026. Beta software is for testing and feedback; it can contain unresolved bugs and is not the stable Fedora 45 release. If you need a dependable everyday workstation, install the latest stable release shown by Fedora’s download channels, not a beta merely because its number is higher.

How long is a Fedora release supported?

Fedora does not promise an indefinitely supported installation. Its practical support window is tied to later releases. Fedora’s DNF upgrade guidance says end of life arrives roughly one month after the N+2 release ships. In practical terms, you normally have support for the current release and the two immediately preceding releases, with a short transition period after the second successor appears.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use that policy as a planning rule, not as a date to postpone action until the last day. Fedora recommends upgrading before end of life, and upgrades across more than two releases are not supported. A workstation that is several releases behind may require a fresh installation, data migration or an intermediate upgrade path that is no longer officially supported.

A sensible maintenance rhythm

  • Install normal security and bug-fix updates whenever they are offered.
  • Check for the next stable release at least twice a year, around Fedora’s late-April and late-October targets.
  • Plan a major upgrade at least annually, rather than waiting until your release approaches end of life.
  • Before upgrading, remove or update third-party repositories that do not yet publish packages for the target release.

How to install routine Fedora updates

Routine updates refresh packages within your existing release. They are different from a release upgrade, which moves the whole system to a new Fedora version.

GNOME Workstation

  1. Open GNOME Software.
  2. Choose the Updates view and allow it to check for available packages.
  3. Start the update. When Fedora has a system update that requires an offline reboot, GNOME Software displays a blue Restart & Update action.
  4. Save your work, select Restart & Update, and leave the computer connected to power until it returns to the login screen.

KDE Plasma

  1. Open Discover.
  2. Select the updates area and review the application and system updates listed.
  3. Apply the updates, then restart when Discover requests it for a system update.

DNF on a traditional RPM installation

Fedora’s conventional desktop installs use RPM packages managed by DNF. In a terminal, refresh repository metadata and apply updates with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

The --refresh option forces a metadata refresh, which is useful when the graphical updater appears stale or when a repository has recently published fixes. Read any transaction summary before confirming. If DNF proposes removing a large number of packages, stop and investigate instead of accepting blindly.

Image-based desktops

Fedora image-based variants use rpm-ostree rather than the traditional package transaction model. Their update and rollback behavior differs from a normal DNF installation, so follow the instructions for the specific image-based edition. Do not apply a conventional DNF release-upgrade recipe to an rpm-ostree system unless that edition’s documentation explicitly calls for it.

How to upgrade to a new Fedora release

A supported release upgrade is normally performed with DNF. Back up personal files first, connect the computer to reliable power, and make sure you have enough free disk space. If the machine is business-critical, test the target release on a spare system or separate disk before changing production hardware.

  1. Bring the current release fully up to date. Run sudo dnf upgrade --refresh and reboot if the transaction installs a new kernel or other components that request it.
  2. Review external repositories. Disable or update repositories that have not published packages for the target Fedora release. Third-party packages are a common source of dependency conflicts.
  3. Download the target release. Replace <target> with the Fedora release number you intend to install:
    sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=<target>
  4. Inspect removals and conflicts. DNF will show packages it must replace or remove. Pay particular attention to proprietary drivers, codec packages and software installed from external repositories. Resolve dependency failures before proceeding.
  5. Start the offline upgrade. Use sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot, or the documented DNF5 offline-reboot workflow where that is the command provided by your installation.
  6. Wait for completion. The computer reboots into a special upgrade environment. Do not power it off while packages are being installed.

Fedora’s documented rule is clear: upgrades across more than two releases are not supported. If your installed release is too old for a supported jump, a clean installation followed by restoration of your backed-up data may be safer than forcing a chain of obsolete upgrade paths.

Why codecs and proprietary drivers may be missing

Fedora’s official repositories prioritize software that can be distributed under Fedora’s licensing and redistribution rules. Some multimedia codecs and proprietary drivers cannot be included there, or cannot be shipped in the same form as on commercial operating systems. A missing codec is therefore often a repository or licensing issue, not evidence that your hardware is defective.

RPM Fusion and other third-party repositories

Fedora’s migration guidance identifies RPM Fusion’s free and non-free repositories as sources for multimedia components, gaming software and drivers. Enabling such a repository can expand compatibility, but it also adds another maintainer and another supply-chain decision to your system.

  • Confirm that the repository supports your exact Fedora release before enabling it.
  • Use the repository’s official setup instructions rather than copying an old command from an unrelated release.
  • Review who maintains the packages, how quickly they follow Fedora releases and how security issues are handled.
  • Expect a release upgrade to fail or remove packages if the repository has not prepared compatible builds.
  • After an upgrade, verify that the repository is enabled for the new release and that important applications still launch.

No single, permanent Fedora 44/45 codec package matrix is established here. Package names and legal availability can change by release and region, so check the current Fedora and RPM Fusion documentation before installing a specific codec. Do not assume that a package name used on Fedora 39 or Fedora 40 remains correct on Fedora 44 or 45.

NVIDIA and other proprietary hardware drivers

Driver installation depends on the GPU generation, Fedora release, repository state and firmware settings. Fedora Linux 41’s release announcement documented renewed support for installing proprietary NVIDIA drivers on Secure Boot systems. In that workflow, GNOME Software creates a Machine Owner Key (MOK); you must manually enroll or enable the key during reboot before the kernel can load the signed driver.

That Fedora 41 behavior should not be treated as a timeless recipe. On a newer release, the graphical prompts, signing arrangement or recommended repository may differ. Before installing, identify your Fedora version, GPU model and whether Secure Boot is enabled in firmware. Follow the current release-specific instructions, and keep a fallback kernel or recovery method available in case a driver update prevents the graphical session from starting.

Common driver symptoms

  • Black screen after an update: boot an older kernel from the boot menu, remove or repair the incompatible driver, and then reinstall a build intended for your Fedora release.
  • Secure Boot rejection: complete the MOK enrollment shown during reboot, or use a driver package whose signing process is supported by your release.
  • Missing acceleration: confirm that the intended driver is actually loaded and that the desktop is not using a fallback graphics stack.

Can you install ordinary desktop applications on Fedora?

Usually, yes, but the best installation source depends on the application. Fedora’s application documentation distinguishes Fedora RPM packages, Fedora Flatpaks, EPEL and other optional repositories. Start with sources that are integrated with Fedora, then consider a reputable upstream source when the application is not packaged there.

Source Best use What to check
Fedora RPM package System-integrated applications and command-line tools Whether the package exists for your Fedora release and architecture
Fedora Flatpak Desktop applications with bundled or sandboxed dependencies Repository availability, permissions and update behavior
Flathub or another optional Flatpak repository Applications not present in Fedora’s own catalog Publisher identity, sandbox permissions and maintenance history
Reputable upstream repository Vendor-supported software unavailable in Fedora or Flatpak catalogs Trust, signing, release compatibility and uninstall instructions
Windows-only software Only when a supported Linux build or equivalent is unavailable Whether the vendor supports Linux, a compatibility layer or a virtual machine

Flatpak through GNOME Software or Discover

GNOME Software and KDE Discover can display and manage Flatpak applications when the relevant repository is enabled. KDE Discover’s documentation also describes adding Flathub when it is required. A Flatpak can solve dependency conflicts by bundling much of an application’s user-space runtime, but it still needs access to files, devices or services that you permit. Read the permissions screen instead of granting every request automatically.

A practical app-availability checklist

  1. Search Fedora’s application catalog for an RPM package.
  2. Search the Fedora Flatpak catalog in GNOME Software or Discover.
  3. Check the application’s own website for an official Linux build or supported Flatpak.
  4. Before adding a repository, verify its publisher, signing method, update cadence and Fedora-release support.
  5. Keep proprietary applications separate from the base system when possible, so their removal does not disturb core desktop packages.

Hardware compatibility and Fedora-ready computers

Fedora maintains a Fedora Ready compatibility list, which is useful when buying a machine intended to run Fedora out of the box. The NovaCustom entry identifies V54 and V56 systems with Fedora preinstalled worldwide; that listing was last reviewed May 22, 2025.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Fedora Ready listing is evidence that the listed configuration has been offered for Fedora, not a guarantee for every screen panel, Wi-Fi module, dock, printer or peripheral in every regional configuration. Confirm the exact CPU, GPU, wireless chipset, webcam and firmware options with the vendor. Also check warranty support for Linux-specific issues and whether the preinstalled image is the Fedora edition you actually want.

Troubleshooting update and installation problems

DNF reports dependency conflicts

Do not force the transaction immediately. Inspect which packages DNF wants to remove, then identify whether they came from a third-party repository. Disable that repository temporarily, update it to a target-release version or remove the conflicting package before retrying. A large proposed removal list is a warning sign.

The graphical updater shows no updates

Open a terminal and run sudo dnf upgrade --refresh on a traditional RPM installation. This refreshes metadata and reveals errors that a graphical front end may hide. On an rpm-ostree desktop, use that edition’s update controls instead of DNF.

A release upgrade stops before reboot

Read the final DNF error, especially references to unavailable repositories, held packages or conflicting drivers. Restore the system to a fully updated state, disable unsupported repositories and retry the documented download command. Do not jump over more than two Fedora releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio or video does not play

First determine whether the application needs a codec that Fedora cannot ship in its official repositories. Then verify that any third-party repository is enabled for your exact release and architecture. Avoid downloading random codec files from search results; mismatched packages can create upgrade problems and security risks.

Fedora desktop maintenance checklist

  • Keep routine updates enabled and reboot when Fedora requests it.
  • Record your Fedora release number before installing drivers or repositories.
  • Back up personal files and important configuration before a release upgrade.
  • Audit third-party repositories before every major upgrade.
  • Use Fedora RPMs or Flatpaks first; treat proprietary repositories as deliberate exceptions.
  • Keep a Fedora installation USB available for recovery or a clean reinstall. Fedora’s migration guidance specifically uses a USB stick for installation media.
  • Check the Fedora Ready list and the exact hardware configuration when purchasing a preinstalled system.

Bottom line for choosing Fedora

Fedora is a strong fit if you want a current Linux desktop and are comfortable upgrading roughly every year. Its official repositories provide a coherent, legally redistributable base; Flatpaks broaden desktop-app availability; and third-party repositories can supply codecs and proprietary drivers when you accept their maintenance and trust trade-offs. The key to a trouble-free Fedora desktop is not avoiding every external package, but knowing which source supplied each component and checking compatibility before every release upgrade.
