Russian officials said the exercise was intended to train prioritization and decision-making. The project was also described as a robot for dangerous rescue and space tasks. “Westworld” is a vivid comparison, not evidence that FEDOR was designed to impersonate a person.
Why was FEDOR firing guns?
In April 2017, video showed FEDOR firing two handguns, one in each hand. The demonstration drew attention because it made an experimental humanoid robot look like a science-fiction gunslinger. In contemporary reporting, Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin said the exercise was meant to train the robot to prioritize and make decisions. He rejected the idea that the project was intended to create a “Terminator.” The Independent reported his translated statement: “We are not creating a Terminator, but artificial intelligence that will be of great practical significance in various fields.”

That was the public explanation for the exercise, not independent evidence of what the training achieved. The footage establishes that FEDOR was shown firing weapons; it does not establish autonomous target selection, battlefield use, or deployment as a weapons system.

What was FEDOR built to do?
FEDOR—an acronym for Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research—was a Russian humanoid robot associated with Android Technologies and government-linked development. ITMO University describes its development as building on the earlier SAR-400 and SAR-401 robots, developed by Android Technologies on commission from Roscosmos. The project was publicly framed around helping in dangerous environments, including rescue work where tasks could put people at risk. ITMO’s 2019 explainer discusses that background.

The point of a humanoid shape in such work is practical rather than theatrical: a robot built around human-scale tools and workspaces may be able to manipulate familiar equipment. But a human-like body is not necessary for every task. ITMO quotes robotics researcher Sergey Kolyubin saying, “However, you could still use solutions with some degree of human resemblance,” in a discussion of the trade-offs involved in designing robots for space.
Was FEDOR really sent to space?
In 2019, the robot was reported under the name Skybot F-850 in connection with a planned trip to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz MS-14. Al Jazeera’s August 2019 report described the announced mission as testing tasks considered risky for astronauts, including handling standard tools. It quoted Roscosmos describing the robot’s purpose as operating in especially dangerous situations aboard spacecraft and in outer space, and cited agency official Alexander Bloshenko discussing work involving cables and tools.

These reports describe the program and mission plans as covered in 2019; they should not be read as evidence of FEDOR’s current operational status. The historical reporting does not establish what the robot is doing in 2026 or identify a current successor.
Is FEDOR a Westworld-style android?
No. The Westworld comparison captures the unsettling image of a human-shaped machine handling weapons, but the sources do not describe FEDOR as a human impersonator, an android covered in realistic skin, or a self-directed killer. The documented claims are narrower: a robot was shown firing guns in a demonstration, officials gave a training rationale, and later coverage connected the project to dangerous-work and space-testing plans.

Nor does the available reporting provide comparable technical measurements that would support ranking FEDOR against other robots. Its demonstrations, stated tasks, and announced plans are different kinds of evidence; none alone proves broad autonomy or dependable performance in real-world rescue or space operations.
