FDM vs. Resin 3D Printing: Which Process Is Right for Your Project?

FDM is often the practical choice for larger, simpler parts; resin suits small, detailed prints when its washing, curing, and workspace needs are manageable.

Choose FDM for larger, simpler, cost-conscious functional parts and a less involved workflow. Choose resin printing when fine detail and smooth surfaces matter enough to justify washing, possible post-curing, extra supplies, and a suitable workspace. Neither process is universally better: the right fit depends on the part, material, finish, size, and how much post-processing you can accommodate.

How FDM and resin printing work

FDM: melted filament deposited in layers

Fused deposition modeling (FDM), also called fused filament fabrication (FFF), feeds thermoplastic filament—such as PLA or ABS—through a heated nozzle and deposits it layer by layer. It is commonly used for proof-of-concept models and quick, low-cost prototypes of relatively simple parts. Formlabs explains FDM and its typical uses.

Resin: light-cured liquid photopolymer

Stereolithography (SLA) cures liquid photopolymer resin with light, building a part in layers. Resin printing is well suited to detailed prototypes and parts where fine features, smooth surfaces, or tight tolerances matter. Desktop resin printers can use different machine implementations, so “resin” does not mean every printer uses an identical light source. Formlabs describes SLA applications.

Which process fits the part you need?

Project need Usually the better starting point Why
Large, relatively simple part FDM FDM is commonly practical for larger, simpler parts and functional prototypes.
Small part with intricate features Resin SLA generally reproduces fine details more effectively.
Smooth surface with minimal visible layer texture Resin Light-cured resin typically produces finer features and smoother surfaces than deposited filament.
Cost-conscious functional prototype FDM FDM is often a practical choice for simple prototypes, but compare the total cost of the specific job.
Part whose strength or durability is critical Compare specific materials and design conditions The process label alone does not establish strength; material, orientation, geometry, and expected loads all matter.

These are tendencies, not guarantees. Printer, material, settings, and geometry affect the finished result. FDM lays down lines of molten material, so layer lines may be visible and the nozzle size affects achievable resolution. SLA generally supports finer detail and smoother surfaces. Formlabs compares the processes’ print quality.

Layer height is only one part of detail

UltiMaker gives typical layer-height ranges of 50–400 microns for FDM and 25–100 microns for SLA in its article dated April 1, 2025. These are typical ranges, not promises for a particular machine or a complete measure of dimensional accuracy or surface quality. UltiMaker’s comparison.

How to judge material performance

Do not assume all resin parts are stronger, or all FDM parts are tougher. Formlabs describes FDM layers as joined by mechanical bonds, while SLA photopolymers cross-link across layers; it characterizes SLA parts as isotropic. Actual performance still depends on the formulation and the part’s conditions of use. Formlabs discusses material and process differences.

Account for the full workflow

FDM finishing

FDM does not require the resin wash workflow, but supports may need to be removed, and sanding can take time if you want a smoother finish. Resin parts may also require support removal. Either process can therefore involve work beyond the print itself.

Resin washing and curing

Resin post-processing commonly includes rinsing a print in isopropyl alcohol or an alternative solvent to remove uncured resin. Some materials also need post-curing to reach their intended strength and stability. Follow the resin and equipment manufacturers’ instructions; a wash-and-cure device does not replace those directions. Formlabs outlines post-processing considerations.

Formlabs describes both workflows as involving design, printing, and post-processing. The practical difference is what that last stage entails: supports or finishing for either process, and solvent washing plus possible post-curing for resin.

Check whether your workspace suits resin

Resin printing involves liquid chemicals, washing, and safety precautions. Prusa advises that it is better suited to a professional environment or dedicated workshop than a home office, citing ventilation, safety gear, and messy post-processing washes. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, and follow the safety instructions for your particular resin and equipment. If you cannot provide an appropriate workspace, that is a strong reason to prefer FDM. Compare total cost, not just printer price

Estimate the cost of a usable part, including the machine, material, labor, failed prints, and any required post-processing setup. Formlabs’ guide lists common FDM filament starting around $50/kg, specialized engineering filament at $100–$150/kg, and most standard and engineering SLA resins at $149–$200/L. These are examples published in a guide whose publication year is not established here; they are not verified current prices. Formlabs’ cost discussion.

A useful comparison for your own project is:

  • What will the printer and required setup cost?
  • How much material will each usable part consume, including likely failed prints?
  • How much time will support removal, washing, curing, or sanding take?
  • What solvent, safety gear, or other post-processing supplies does the process require?

Make the choice for your project

  1. Start with the part. If it is large and relatively simple, consider FDM first. If it is small and detailed, consider resin.
  2. Set the finish requirement. If fine features and smooth surfaces are central, resin has a general advantage; if visible layer lines are acceptable, FDM may suit the job.
  3. Check material performance. Compare the exact material data, orientation, geometry, load, and operating environment rather than relying on the process name.
  4. Be realistic about post-processing and space. Decide whether you can handle resin washing, possible curing, and the workspace and safety requirements for your equipment.
  5. Calculate cost per usable part. Include material, labor, failures, and post-processing—not only the printer’s purchase price.
