For authoritative U.S. election results, start with the relevant state election office; use the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to find state and territory election websites. For county, city, and municipal contests, check the local election office. Newsroom tallies can help you follow updates, but preliminary figures and media race calls are not official certification.
Where do I find election results?
- Find the state or territory election site. Use the EAC’s Where do I find election results? page to locate the appropriate official website.
- Check the local election office for local contests. County and municipal offices may publish more detailed results and jurisdiction-specific notices. The United States has more than 10,000 election jurisdictions, according to the EAC’s voter FAQ, so local procedures and reporting pages differ.
- Use a newsroom results page as a companion. For example, the Associated Press (AP) says it gathers results from precincts and county offices and checks them against county and state websites and election-official data feeds. Its results methodology can help explain the newsroom’s process, but an AP tally or call is not the jurisdiction’s certification.
The National Association of Secretaries of State’s #TrustedInfo campaign also directs voters to election officials’ websites and materials. The EAC is a guidance clearinghouse, not a regulator; the relevant election office is the source to consult for local rules and official status.

Are election-night results final?
No. The EAC says, “Election-night results are unofficial and never final” in its voter FAQ. Initial totals are preliminary; eligible ballots may still need to be counted, and officials then canvass and certify results. Final results can take days or weeks, depending on the jurisdiction and the election.
Updates after election night do not by themselves indicate a problem. Officials may still be processing eligible provisional, absentee, mail, military, and overseas ballots. Different jurisdictions have different rules and schedules, so there is no single national deadline that applies to every contest.

What do result labels mean?
| Label or stage | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary or unofficial | Early results reported by election officials before the canvass and certification are complete. | That every eligible ballot has been counted or the result is final. |
| Expected vote | AP’s estimate of total turnout, refined as actual returns arrive. | A verified count of how many ballots have been counted. AP says the estimate can fluctuate. |
| Precincts reporting | How many precincts or reporting units have submitted results under that page’s method. | A reliable percentage of ballots counted. Early, mail, or partial results may be reported differently. |
| Race called or projected | A newsroom’s conclusion that the available vote leaves a trailing candidate without a path to win. | Official certification by election officials. |
| Canvassed | Officials have aggregated and checked valid ballots and reconciled ballot and voter records as part of the canvass. | That every state uses identical procedures or timing. |
| Certified or final | The authorized election officials have attested to the official results under the jurisdiction’s process. | That no recount or other legally provided process can occur. |
AP explains that “precincts reporting” can be misleading when early votes are reported as one unit or a precinct reports only some results. Neither a high reporting percentage nor an early lead establishes how much of the vote has been counted or who will win. Check the page’s definitions and the official office’s updates rather than comparing labels across sites as if they were uniform. AP’s counting explanation describes these limitations.
What is the difference between a race call and certified results?
A race call is a newsroom judgment; certification is an official step in election administration. AP says it declares a winner when it is confident trailing candidates cannot catch the leader. That may happen before all ballots are counted, but it does not make the tally official. The EAC states that only election officials provide official election results in its guide to results, canvass, and certification.

A race marked “too close to call” means the available information does not yet let that newsroom determine a winner. It is not, on its own, evidence of wrongdoing. For the official outcome and its status, follow the relevant election office.

Canvass and certification
The canvass aggregates and confirms valid ballots, including eligible mail, military and overseas, early, Election Day, and provisional ballots, and checks that ballot and voter records reconcile. Certification is the formal attestation by authorized officials that results are a true and accurate accounting of votes cast. The responsible officials and timelines vary by state and sometimes by local jurisdiction; the EAC explains the distinction in its canvass and certification guide.

Audits and recounts
An audit checks whether voting equipment counted votes accurately; the EAC’s voter FAQ describes audits that review paper ballots to confirm machine-count accuracy. A recount is a separate count of ballots in a contest or subset, often triggered under state-defined conditions, and can change official results. Audit methods, recount triggers, and schedules depend on state law and local administration. Consult the election office for the rules that apply to a particular race.

What to check when a number changes
- Look for an official update identifying the newly reported ballot type, batch, or jurisdiction.
- Check whether the page labels the figure preliminary, estimated, called, canvassed, or certified.
- Use the election office’s notices to understand corrections or reconciliation updates; do not assume two result pages update at the same time.
- For certification dates, audit details, or recount rules, consult the relevant state or local election office rather than inferring a deadline from election-night coverage.
