That can help with related word forms and unfamiliar spellings, but it does not guarantee that every unseen string will have the intended meaning.
What is a word embedding?
A word embedding is a learned numeric representation of a word. Instead of handling each word only as a label, a model maps it to a vector—a list of numbers—that can be used by downstream language tasks. The values are learned from text rather than assigned as dictionary definitions.

In a conventional word-level representation, each vocabulary item has its own learned vector. A word absent from that vocabulary has no such stored entry. fastText changes how the representation is built by incorporating character n-gram vectors alongside the word representation.
How fastText uses character n-grams
A character n-gram is a sequence of n adjacent characters. For example, a word can be decomposed into overlapping short character sequences. fastText learns vectors for these pieces and combines them with the word’s representation. Related spellings can therefore share some learned components, such as recurring prefixes, suffixes, or stems.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The fastText paper describes this subword method as a way to enrich word vectors and represent words that were not observed as whole tokens during training. When asked for an out-of-vocabulary word, the model can compose a vector from the character pieces it recognizes. This is useful when forms share spelling patterns, including morphological variants, but the result is not a semantic guarantee: an unusual spelling, a different language, or noisy tokenization can produce a vector that does not reflect the intended meaning. Bojanowski et al., “Enriching Word Vectors with Subword Information”, appeared in TACL volume 5 in 2017.
Training and querying word vectors
The project README documents a skip-gram training workflow using UTF-8 text. For word-representation learning, the documented default character n-gram lengths are 3 to 6; this is a default, not a rule that applies to every mode or configuration. The settings can be overridden.
-
Prepare a UTF-8 training text file and use the project’s documented skip-gram training command for your chosen configuration.

To request vectors for query words—including words absent from the training vocabulary—use the documented command
fasttext print-word-vectors model.bin < queries.txt, replacing the model and query filenames with your own.
The exact options and defaults depend on the selected mode and configuration. Consult the fastText README before running a command in a particular environment.
Character n-grams are not classification word n-grams
fastText also supports text classification, but its use of n-grams there is distinct from the character n-grams used to enrich word representations. The classification approach can use vectors for word n-grams—sequences of words—to incorporate local word order. Meta’s explanation distinguishes low-dimensional vectors for vocabulary words from word n-gram vectors used in classification. Meta Engineering’s fastText overview describes that classification design.

It can construct a vector. If the word’s character pieces overlap with patterns learned in training, fastText can combine those pieces even when the complete token was not in the vocabulary.

It cannot ensure the vector is meaningful. A vector is a model output, not proof that the spelling belongs to the training language or that the model inferred the intended definition.
-
Its value depends on the task. Whether subword handling improves an application should be checked on that application’s data and evaluation measure.
How to compare fastText with other embedding approaches
A fair comparison with word2vec, GloVe, or contextual embedding systems requires controlling the conditions rather than relying on a general claim that one method is better. Use the same corpus, preprocessing, vector dimensionality, training budget, and evaluation task where those controls are applicable. Then assess the differences that matter to the use case:

The fastText GitHub repository is archived and read-only; GitHub records the archive date as March 19, 2024. Its documentation describes builds using make or CMake and a Python installation path, and the stable-release instructions refer to v0.9.2. Because the repository is archived, check dependency and installation compatibility against your current software environment rather than assuming the documented steps will work unchanged. The repository and README contain the project instructions and status.
The repository lists pretrained vectors for 157 languages, trained on Wikipedia and Crawl. Treat that as the repository’s stated resource scope, not a guarantee that every download remains available or that a model is complete or suitable for a particular task.
