If you forgot your phone’s screen PIN, there is no general official way to reveal it while keeping data stored only on the device. Your options depend on the phone, its software, and features set up before you were locked out. First check for a narrow Samsung recovery option and confirm your backups and account access; otherwise, Apple and Google’s standard recovery paths involve erasing or resetting the phone.
Before you try to unlock the phone
Confirm that the problem is the screen lock, not a carrier restriction. A carrier lock affects which mobile network a phone can use; it does not remove a screen PIN. Apple says it cannot unlock an iPhone for use with another service provider; the carrier handles network unlocking (Apple’s carrier-unlock guidance).

Before erasing anything, identify the phone’s maker and model, check whether a recent cloud or computer backup exists, and confirm that you can sign in to the Google Account or Apple Account previously linked to the device. Photos and files synced elsewhere may still be available, but a reset does not recover local data that was never backed up.

- Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for your exact model. Button combinations and reset procedures differ; there is no safe universal key sequence.
- Make sure you can access the account the phone may request during setup after a reset. If necessary, use the official account-recovery route before proceeding.
- If the phone belongs to an employer, school, family member, or someone who has died, use the owner’s or organization’s authorized account and official support channels. Do not try to bypass their controls.
Can you recover a recent Samsung screen lock?
Samsung documents a limited option for eligible Galaxy phones running One UI 6.1 or later. If you changed the screen lock within the previous 72 hours and the former lock has not been deleted, the phone may let you use that previous PIN, pattern, or password to set a new one. Samsung’s India support page says the recovery prompt appears after five or more failed attempts; the previous credential itself has a limited number of attempts (Samsung’s previous-lock instructions).

This is a time-limited recovery feature, not a way to reveal or bypass a forgotten lock. It will not help if the device or software is ineligible, the earlier lock was deleted, or the retention window has passed. Follow the prompts on the device and stop if you are unsure of the previous credential rather than exhausting the available attempts.
What happens if you reset an Android phone?
Google’s current guidance is direct: “If you can’t unlock your phone, you’ll need to erase it.” After erasing, you set the device up again and create a new screen lock. Erasure removes data stored on the phone, so recovery depends on a backup or copies already synced elsewhere (Google’s Android unlock and erase guidance).

Remote erase
Google describes remote erasure through Find Hub when the phone meets the service’s prerequisites. The device needs power and a network connection, a Google Account, Find Hub enabled, and visibility in Google Play. If those conditions are not met, a remote erase may not be available.

Google also points to a reset using the phone’s physical buttons, but directs users to the manufacturer’s device-specific instructions. Do not rely on a button sequence intended for another model; the procedure varies by handset.

After a reset, Android device protection may require the Google Account previously used on the phone. Resetting does not remove that anti-theft check. Samsung’s US support guidance says an authorized service center may be able to help an owner who cannot remember the account, with proof of purchase (Samsung’s US reset guidance).
Samsung remote reset options depend on region
Samsung’s US support page describes erasing a Galaxy through SmartThings Find, using the relevant Samsung Account, and also describes a Google Find My Device reset route. Erasing through SmartThings Find permanently deletes device data. These are reset options, not remote screen unlocks.

Availability and service wording differ by region. Samsung’s UK support page says remote unlocking through SmartThings Find is no longer possible (Samsung’s UK guidance). Check the current Samsung support instructions for your country and model; do not assume a remote option exists just because it is described for another region.

Apple’s forgotten-passcode process involves erasing and resetting the iPhone, not revealing the old passcode. In supported situations, an on-device Erase option may appear; Apple’s instructions specify the iOS conditions, network connection, Apple Account sign-in, and Find My requirements. If that option is unavailable, follow Apple’s restore instructions for the particular device (Apple’s forgotten-passcode guidance).

Resetting removes the iPhone’s data unless it can be restored from a backup. Before starting, confirm that you can access the Apple Account associated with the device.
Activation Lock can remain after erasure
Erasing an iPhone does not necessarily remove Activation Lock. Apple says the account associated with setting up the device, or another eligible Apple support process, is needed to remove that protection. If you cannot access the associated account, resolve that issue through Apple’s official process before erasing, so you understand whether you will be able to activate the phone afterward (Apple’s Activation Lock guidance).
Why a factory reset is not a data-preserving shortcut
A reset can restore access to the setup process, but it is not a method for extracting the forgotten PIN or preserving unbacked-up local files. The recovery decision turns on five practical questions:

- Does the device qualify? The Samsung previous-lock feature has specific software and timing requirements; reset procedures are model-specific.
- Can you sign in to the linked account? Google or Apple account verification may be required after erasure.
- Is a remote option configured and available? Remote management depends on prerequisites such as connectivity and previously enabled services, and regional availability can differ.
- Is the data backed up? Erasure removes locally stored data; only backups or existing synced copies can restore what they contain.
- Can you activate the phone afterward? Account-based anti-theft protection can remain after reset.
Avoid paid tools that promise to bypass the screen lock, preserve inaccessible data, or defeat anti-theft checks. The official recovery routes described by Apple, Google, and Samsung rely on eligible prior settings, account access, backup restoration, or erasure—not a universal unlock utility.
