Faster Payments vs Bacs vs CHAPS: A UK API Guide for 2026

Faster Payments is the immediate, round-the-clock UK rail, Bacs suits bulk credits and scheduled debits on a three-day cycle, and CHAPS handles high-value sterling. Here is how to choose between them and what each means for an API integration.

Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS are three separate UK payment schemes with different jobs. Faster Payments handles immediate payments around the clock, subject to the customer’s bank service. Bacs handles bulk credits and scheduled debits on a three-day processing cycle. CHAPS is the sterling scheme for high-value payments. Choose the scheme first, because a bank’s or payment service provider’s API inherits that scheme’s timing, limits and status behaviour before it adds its own rules.

Figures below come from Pay.UK publications dated 2025 and 2026. Each one is labelled with its basis, whether an annual total or an average per day.

Volume and value figures come from Pay.UK’s Annual Summary of Payment Statistics 2025, published in 2026. Faster Payments figures are annual totals, while Bacs and CHAPS figures are averages per day across 2025. Averages describe the scheme as a whole, not any one customer’s limit.

Faster Payments: immediate and always on

Pay.UK describes the scheme’s availability in these terms:

#1 Best Overall

  • Safely and securely accepts payments anywhere. Plus, get data security, 24/7 fraud prevention, and payment-dispute management at no extra cost.
  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

“The Faster Payment System is available day and night, 365 days per year, supporting the demands of personal and business customers since its creation in 2008.”

That is a scheme-level statement. Whether a given customer can send a payment at a given hour still depends on their bank service, so an app should not promise round-the-clock sending to every user without confirming that the customer’s bank supports it. Source: Pay.UK, Faster Payment System.

What the response means for your API

Pay.UK’s transaction types guidance says the central infrastructure “provides a response to the sending bank within 15 seconds, confirming that the receiving bank has accepted or rejected the payment.” Acceptance is the receiving bank’s decision, and it is separate from the funds being usable. Funds are usually available nearly immediately, but can take up to two hours.

Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

Model at least three outcomes as distinct statuses: rejected, accepted but not yet available, and available. Return states belong in the same model, because a payment that was accepted can still come back later.

Limits and eligibility

The scheme maximum is £1 million per transaction. Pay.UK’s 2025 annual statistics report records that limit as raised effective 8 February 2022. Individual banks can set lower limits, so the limit that applies to a sending account should come from the sending provider rather than a hard-coded £1 million. Eligibility also varies by account, so check the receiving sort code as described in the sort code section below.

Corporate bulk files

Pay.UK says direct corporate access supports bulk files, using a secure-IP solution and the same file format as Bacs transactions, as set out in its transaction types guidance. A team that already produces Bacs-format files may find this route familiar. Whether a particular bank or PSP exposes it to you is a question for that provider.

Rank #3

  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

Bacs: scheduled credits and debits, not instant

Bacs carries two families of payment: Direct Credits, such as payroll and welfare payments, and Direct Debits, such as utility, insurance, mortgage and subscription collections. Direct Debits are the larger share of Bacs volume. In 2025 they made up about 73% of transactions per average day, by count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay.UK’s 2025 PFMI self-assessment describes the three-day processing cycle. Do not describe Bacs as instant in product copy, onboarding screens or API documentation.

Designing for a processing cycle

A Bacs integration is built around files and a multi-day cycle, not single calls that settle at once. Attach each status to the file or payment that produced it, and track submission, processing and returns as separate stages. For Direct Debits, keep mandate state in the model: a collection should only be scheduled against a mandate that is active in your records.

  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

CHAPS: high-value sterling payments

CHAPS is the high-value option in this comparison. Pay.UK’s 2025 annual statistics show a much higher average value per item than the retail schemes. Dividing the average daily value by the average daily volume in the table above gives roughly £1.77 million per payment. That is a scheme-wide average, not a figure to design product limits around.

Technical message guidance for CHAPS is in MyStandards, which Pay.UK points to from its accessing standards page. Scheme rules come from the Bank of England, so cite that documentation for scheme behaviour and treat secondary summaries as a starting point only. Operating hours, customer cut-offs and fees are not covered in the Pay.UK guidance cited in this article; they appear in the checklist at the end.

Choosing the rail for each use case

Start from the payment pattern, then check amount, timing and access. The table maps common cases to a rail, but it does not replace the bank’s own eligibility rules.

Payroll or supplier payments batched into one run, where a three-day cycle is acceptable Bacs Direct Credits Built for bulk Direct Credits

Many products use more than one rail. For example, a business might pay individuals instantly through Faster Payments while running its weekly payroll through Bacs.

Where the scheme ends and your API begins

A scheme rule and a provider endpoint are different things. Pay.UK’s guidance does not establish one common API schema across Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS, so keep these layers separate in your design:

  • Scheme rules: timing, value limits and operating calendar, as set by the scheme
  • Provider API: endpoints, authentication, request format and any idempotency handling, which stops a retried request from creating a second payment
  • Scheme messages and file formats: the structures the scheme requires, which a provider may wrap or pass through
  • Status lifecycle: the states the provider reports for acceptance, rejection, pending posting and completion
  • Returns: how returned items are reported and linked back to the original payment
  • Reconciliation: matching what you sent against statements and scheme reports

Direct or indirect access

Pay.UK describes direct access as participation under an arrangement with the payment system operator. Indirect access is a contractual arrangement with a direct participant, commonly called sponsored access. Pay.UK says the right route depends on:

  • the proposition and end-user products
  • payment types and volumes
  • connection preferences
  • obligations
  • access eligibility

Settle this before API design, because the access route determines which interfaces and file routes you can use. Source: Pay.UK, access to payment systems.

Standards and specifications

Pay.UK’s accessing standards page points to these resources:

  • Standards Library: Faster Payments specifications and documentation
  • Standards Source: other standards
  • Standards portals: API design resources and technical mappings
  • MyStandards: CHAPS technical message guidance

Check each account before routing

Pay.UK’s sort code checker shows whether a sort code can receive Faster Payments, Bacs Direct Credits or CHAPS, and whether Direct Debits can be set up. Its data is updated weekly. Use it as a routing gate:

  1. Open the Pay.UK sort code checker.
  2. Enter the payee’s sort code.
  3. Read the Faster Payments, Bacs Direct Credit, CHAPS and Direct Debit results separately.
  4. Record each result with the date you checked it, and re-check on a schedule, because the source updates weekly.
  5. Confirm the receiving account separately. The checker works at sort-code level, so it does not confirm that an individual account can receive a particular payment.
