Word embeddings can help an FAQ chatbot find a stored answer when someone asks the same thing in different words. They do not make the answer inherently correct, current, or suitable for that user. The key distinction is between retrieving likely content and generating or returning an answer: these are separate stages, and each can fail in a different way.
The headline describes a personal experiment, but no details establish what system was built or what unexpected behavior occurred. The technical explanation below does not attribute invented tests or results to that experience.

What embeddings change in an FAQ chatbot
An embedding represents text as a vector: a list of numerical values intended to capture aspects of its meaning. A retrieval system can compare the vector for a user’s query with vectors for stored FAQ content, then rank candidate matches by similarity. This can surface relevant text even when the query and FAQ share few keywords. OpenAI describes semantic search as surfacing semantically similar results “even when they match few or no keywords” in its Retrieval documentation.

A basic FAQ flow might embed a user’s question, compare it with embedded FAQ entries, and return the stored answer associated with the highest-ranked match. Another design passes the retrieved FAQ text to a language model, which then composes a response. In the second design, the model’s generated wording is not the same thing as the retrieval result; the retrieved content can be relevant while the generated answer still misstates it.

Why a semantically similar result can still be wrong
Similarity is a ranking signal, not a guarantee of correctness. A chatbot can retrieve an entry that is related to the user’s words but answers a different question, applies to a different situation, or is out of date. If a system always returns the top match, it may give a confident-looking answer even when none of its FAQs addresses the query.
Question-to-answer matching can be a mismatch
If the system compares a user’s question directly with FAQ answer text, the two may express the same information in very different language. Google Cloud warns that this can degrade search quality because “questions and their answers are not semantically similar.” Its embedding task-type documentation describes retrieval-specific task types intended to align embeddings with information retrieval. Whether these options are available and appropriate depends on the embedding product and its current documentation.

Exact strings may need lexical search
Semantic matching can be less dependable when a query hinges on an exact product number, newly introduced name, or private codename. Those cases may have little established semantic context, while a keyword index can match the literal token. Hybrid retrieval combines semantic and keyword signals, helping cover both paraphrases and exact-string searches. The weighting and behavior need to be checked against the FAQ corpus rather than assumed to work automatically.

Keyword, semantic, or hybrid retrieval?
| Approach | Useful for | Main risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword search | Exact terms, identifiers, and names that must match literally. | May miss a relevant FAQ when the user uses different wording. |
| Semantic retrieval | Paraphrases and questions that express a known issue with different words. | A related result may not be the right answer; exact or unfamiliar tokens can be overlooked. |
| Hybrid retrieval | Queries where both the underlying meaning and exact terms matter. | Requires tuning and evaluation; there is no universally best balance of semantic and keyword results. |
The appropriate choice depends on the bot’s questions, identifiers, acceptable response time, operating resources, and maintenance capacity. The cited documentation establishes the difference between semantic and token matching, but does not establish a universal performance winner.

Retrieval and answer generation need separate checks
First inspect what the retrieval stage returns. If it selects the wrong FAQ, changing the wording of a generated response will not fix the underlying selection. If it selects a suitable FAQ but the final response is misleading, the problem lies later in the pipeline or in how retrieved context is used.
- Check the candidate: For each test question, record which FAQ or passage the system retrieved and whether it actually answers that question.
- Check the response: If a generation model is involved, compare its answer with the retrieved text. Look for unsupported claims, omitted conditions, or details that contradict the source FAQ.
- Check abstention: Include questions the FAQ cannot answer. Decide whether the chatbot should say it does not know, ask for clarification, or route the user elsewhere instead of forcing a match.
Build an evaluation set from representative user queries. Include paraphrases, ambiguous questions, exact identifiers, and unanswerable questions. Score retrieval quality separately from the generated answer; otherwise, a fluent response can obscure a poor match.

What published FAQ chatbot studies do—and do not—show
A 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics DASH workshop paper describes an HR support chatbot using a knowledge base of approximately 48,000 FAQs and approximately 41,000 real user utterances, with a 6,000-sample evaluation set. The study describes embedding-based retrieval, filters for factors such as country, region, and employment status, and query transformations. These are details of that particular system, not general benchmarks for FAQ chatbots. See the ACL Anthology.

Embedding size is a resource trade-off
Larger embeddings generally require more compute, memory, and storage. Reducing vector dimensions can shrink that footprint, but may trade away some accuracy. The right balance depends on the application and should be assessed with representative queries and the current specifications of the chosen embedding model. OpenAI’s embeddings documentation explains these resource and dimensionality trade-offs; model names and implementation details can change over time.
What “smarter” means in practice
For an FAQ chatbot, embeddings can make retrieval more tolerant of different phrasing. That is a real, bounded improvement: the system may find a relevant stored item that keyword matching alone would miss. It does not validate that item, determine whether it applies to the user, keep the FAQ current, or ensure a generated answer faithfully reflects it.
So the practical question is not whether embeddings make a bot smart in general. It is whether the retrieval stage finds the right FAQ for the kinds of questions people actually ask—and whether the system handles weak matches and unanswered questions safely.
