A midpoint or last-traded price is not a promise that your order can execute at that price. This approach limits price exposure, but cannot guarantee a fill or a particular execution price.
What slippage means on Polymarket
Polymarket prices come from user orders in a central limit order book (CLOB). A buy consumes asks; a sell consumes bids. Larger orders can use several price levels, so the average execution price may be worse than the best quote. The visible midpoint and last trade may not be executable for your intended quantity. Polymarket’s Prices & Orderbook documentation advises checking depth before trading in size.

It helps to separate three costs when measuring a bot’s execution:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Spread cost: the difference between a reference such as the midpoint and the executable best ask for a buy or best bid for a sell.
- Size impact: the additional price deterioration from consuming multiple levels to fill the requested quantity.
- Realized execution difference: the difference between the chosen reference price and the quantity-weighted average of actual fills.
Keep platform fees separate from these price measures. These are useful analytical distinctions; the cited Polymarket pages do not establish one universal slippage formula or cap.

Estimate the price for your full order before sending it
Use the book for the specific outcome asset, not a headline price alone. Walk the opposite-side levels until the intended share quantity is covered, adding each level’s price multiplied by its filled quantity. Divide the total notional by the shares covered to estimate the weighted average execution price. Compare that estimate with your strategy’s reference price and allowed deterioration.
- Fetch the outcome asset’s current book and inspect bids, asks, sizes, spread, minimum order size, and tick size. The Place Orders guide shows these fields in its book example.
- For a buy, walk asks from lowest to highest; for a sell, walk bids from highest to lowest. Stop when the requested quantity is covered or the available depth runs out.
- Calculate the estimated average price from the total notional and covered shares. If depth is insufficient or the estimate breaches your price budget, reduce the size, wait for conditions to change, or do not submit.
- Recheck immediately before submission and after relevant book changes. Quotes can change between observation and matching, and configured delay windows may apply.
The calculation is a pre-trade estimate based on the documented order-book structure, not a fill guarantee. Polymarket’s price page illustrates why a midpoint is not necessarily executable: in its example, a $0.34 best bid and $0.40 best ask produce a displayed midpoint of $0.37, while a buyer pays the ask and a seller receives the bid. Those figures are an explanatory example, not market-wide data. See Prices & Orderbook.

Set a hard price boundary, then choose how the order should fill
Polymarket states that all orders are limit orders. What is commonly called a market order is a limit order priced to execute immediately against available resting orders. A limit price defines the worst price you will accept; an order that cannot match at that price may rest or remain unfilled. See Order Lifecycle and Place Orders.

| Order behavior | What happens | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| GTC | Rests until filled or cancelled. | There is no immediate deadline and the bot can monitor and manage a resting order. |
| GTD | Rests until filled, cancelled, or its specified expiry. | The order should stop being eligible after a defined time. The current trading guide documents an expiry security threshold of one minute before the stated expiry and a minimum future-expiry constraint; check the current guide when implementing it. |
| FOK | Fills the entire quantity immediately or is cancelled. | A partial position is unacceptable, and the bot can tolerate no fill. |
| FAK | Fills the immediately available quantity and cancels the remainder. | A partial fill is useful, but leaving a resting balance is not. |
| Post-only | Where supported, rests as maker liquidity and is rejected if it would match immediately. | The strategy requires maker placement. Confirm that the relevant client or API supports it and verify its current behavior before relying on it. |
The first four behaviors are described in Order Lifecycle; tick-size, minimum-size, and GTD details are covered in Place Orders. A strict limit controls the worst acceptable price, not whether the order fills.
Keep the bot’s market state current
A decision based on an old book can be wrong by the time the order reaches matching. Polymarket’s market data stream documents book, price-change, last-trade-price, and tick-size-change events. Use relevant events to refresh cached state and invalidate or recompute pending price and size decisions. If the integration stores tick size, listen for changes rather than assuming it stays fixed. See Real-Time Data and Place Orders.

Verify the order and measure actual execution
Submission is not the same as a completed fill. Check the response and subsequent order or trade updates for acceptance, status, filled quantity, and—where returned—trade IDs and transaction hashes. The documented order states include live, matched, and delayed. In some configured markets, a marketable order can be pending during a delay and cannot be cancelled. The documentation describes a 250 ms taker-delay case for selected crypto and finance up/down markets, and delays in configured sports markets; neither applies universally. Check the specific market configuration. Details are in Place Orders and Order Lifecycle.

For each attempt, record the requested quantity, reference price, estimated average price, limit, order type, timestamps, status, filled quantity, and average realized fill price. These records let you evaluate whether a strategy’s price budget is working; the reviewed official documentation does not publish performance results for a particular trading bot.
Evaluate slippage controls without confusing the results
When comparing bot configurations or venues, hold the market, time window, order size, and reference-price convention constant. Compare the factors that affect execution separately:
- Spread and available depth at the intended size.
- Estimated versus realized weighted-average price.
- Fill rate, partial-fill rate, and time to fill.
- Cancellations and applicable fees.
Polymarket’s official documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal numeric slippage cap or a named benchmark for bot performance. Set a strategy-specific budget and assess it against recorded fills rather than treating any threshold as a platform standard. Check current official documentation and live market configuration before deploying, since trading constraints and feed behavior can change.
