Its current storage allowance is substantially larger than PS5’s. Choose either console for the core game when frame-rate targets matter: both have native current-generation applications, a documented 60-FPS Performance mode, and the same Quality-mode targets. Neither platform has a trustworthy, reproducible current benchmark proving that it loads Fallout 4 faster in every situation.
The practical differences are therefore straightforward: Xbox gives mod users far more room, PS5 preserves its installed Creations through Bethesda’s 2026 storage update, and both consoles can deliver the same published graphics targets. Real loading behavior depends heavily on the game’s current load order and whether mods introduce instability.

These figures describe Bethesda’s documented targets and allowances, not a guarantee that every scene, save, or mod combination will behave identically. Performance mode uses dynamic resolution scaling to protect its frame-rate target, while Quality mode does not require that scaling. The 40-FPS Quality target applies when the console is connected to a 120 Hz display.

Which console has better Fallout 4 mod support?
Xbox Series X|S is the clear choice for players who build large load orders. Bethesda’s 2026 figures give Xbox a maximum expandable Creations allocation of 100 GB, compared with approximately 15 GB on PS5. That difference is large enough to change how you plan a modded playthrough, not merely which single texture pack you can add.

What the larger Xbox allowance changes
A larger allowance lets you combine more substantial additions before you have to remove something: quest expansions, settlement systems, environment overhauls, weapon and armor packs, and quality-of-life changes can coexist with more headroom. It also makes it easier to keep separate themed load orders, such as a settlement-focused setup and a combat-focused setup, without repeatedly deleting and reinstalling content.
Storage capacity is not the same as guaranteed stability. Every Creations package can affect scripts, assets, world cells, or the order in which plugins are loaded. A larger budget gives you room; it does not remove conflicts, missing dependencies, broken scripts, or save corruption risks. Treat the allowance as a ceiling for installed content, not as a recommendation to fill every available gigabyte.
When PS5 is enough
PS5’s approximately 15 GB allocation is more suitable for a deliberately selected load order than for a collection that keeps growing. It can accommodate a focused set of visual improvements, interface changes, bug fixes, and a few larger projects, provided you monitor compatibility and leave room for updates. If you mainly play the unmodded game, use a handful of small enhancements, or prefer the simpler maintenance of a short list, the smaller allowance may never become a practical limitation.
PS5 also has one maintenance advantage after Bethesda’s 2026 storage change: installations are preserved. You still need to check that each Creations package is compatible with your current save, but you do not face the Xbox-specific first-launch purge described below.
The May 27, 2026 Xbox reset
Bethesda’s May 27, 2026 storage update changed the Xbox allowance and clears installed Xbox Creations the first time Fallout 4 launches after the update. The game therefore needs either a fresh download of your chosen packages or restoration of a saved load order. Bethesda’s notice says players should save their console load order before the update, and it warns that saves older than November 10, 2025 are expected to be affected by the reset process.
If you are updating an Xbox installation now, do not assume that a previously working list will reappear automatically. Record the order and the names of every package you rely on, then restore in stages. If the update has already removed your installations, start with the minimum set needed to open the affected save and add the rest only after confirming that the game reaches the main menu and loads a test save.
How to choose and maintain a console load order
- Decide whether capacity or simplicity matters more. Choose Xbox when large projects and a high number of installed packages are central to your playthrough. Choose PS5 when a compact, curated list is sufficient and preserving installations through the 2026 update is valuable.
- Write down the order before changing it. Keep the package names, their sequence, and any notes about required patches in a separate document. A screenshot alone can be difficult to search when you are rebuilding a long list.
- Add content in small groups. Install a few related packages, launch the game, and test a save before adding another group. This makes a conflict easier to identify than installing an entire catalogue at once.
- Keep a clean fallback. Maintain a save made before major load-order changes. Do not overwrite your only working save immediately after enabling a script-heavy package.
- Remove carefully. Disabling a package that has already written scripts or objects into a save can leave persistent changes. If a package’s instructions warn against removal during a playthrough, start a new save rather than experimenting with the only copy of an old one.
Fallout 4 performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Native applications and the published modes
Bethesda released native PS5 and Xbox Series applications on April 25, 2024, with increased resolutions and support for frame rates of up to 60 FPS. On both platforms, Performance mode targets 60 FPS at 4K using standard settings and dynamic resolution scaling. Quality mode targets 30 FPS at 4K with ultra settings. When a 120 Hz display is connected, Quality mode targets 40 FPS.
Those labels describe a choice between responsiveness and visual settings. Performance mode is the sensible starting point for players who notice input latency or uneven camera movement, especially in first-person combat. Quality mode is aimed at players who prefer the highest built-in visual settings and accept a lower frame-rate target. The 40-FPS option is a useful middle ground only if your television or monitor can run at 120 Hz; a 60 Hz panel cannot display that target correctly.
What dynamic resolution means in play
Dynamic resolution scaling allows the renderer to lower internal resolution temporarily when a scene is difficult to draw, then raise it again when the workload falls. The output remains a 4K-mode presentation, but fine detail can look softer during demanding moments. That trade-off is intentional: the mode prioritizes maintaining its frame-rate target rather than holding one fixed internal resolution at all times.
Quality mode has ultra settings and no requirement for dynamic resolution scaling. It can therefore look sharper in scenes where Performance mode has reduced its internal resolution, but its lower frame-rate target changes how movement and aiming feel. There is no universally correct setting; the best choice depends on whether you value consistent responsiveness or maximum built-in detail.

Hitching and frame pacing
Digital Foundry’s May 14, 2024 re-review tested PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, including their graphics modes. Its summary still identified intrusive hitching as an issue after the patch. That finding is important for expectations: a mode with a 60-FPS target can still exhibit momentary stutters, and the existence of the same target on both consoles does not prove identical frame pacing in every location.
Hitching can be more noticeable when the game streams a new area, compiles or loads assets, or processes a heavily modified save. It should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that one console is defective. Compare the same save, the same mode, and the same load order before drawing a platform conclusion.
Series X versus Series S
Bethesda documents the same mode targets for the Xbox Series X|S family. The names describe one software family, not a guarantee that every internal rendering condition or display output will look identical between the two Xbox models. If you are choosing between the Xbox models specifically for Fallout 4, use the published targets as the common baseline and treat actual image quality, storage capacity, and other hardware differences as separate purchase considerations.
Which console loads Fallout 4 faster?
There is no authoritative, reproducible current benchmark that establishes a universal PS5-versus-Series-X winner for Fallout 4. Both consoles run the native current-generation application from SSD storage, so both load materially faster than the original last-generation hardware. That is the reliable conclusion; publishing a single number or declaring one console always faster would go beyond the available evidence.
Why a fixed winner is difficult to establish
Fallout 4 loading is affected by the save itself, the area being entered, the amount of content the game must initialize, and the active Creations list. A clean, unmodded save can behave differently from a settlement-heavy save with script-based additions. Even two runs of the same save can vary if the console is resuming the game, rebuilding temporary data, or performing background system work.

For a meaningful personal comparison, use the same save, the same graphics mode, and the same load order on both consoles. Perform several cold launches and several area transitions, discard obvious outliers, and record the results with a stopwatch or capture device. That kind of test can answer which system is faster for your particular setup, but it is not a general benchmark for every player.
How mods affect loading and stability
Large or script-heavy load orders can lengthen initialization and can make a game appear stuck. Bethesda advises clearing mods or reinstalling on affected consoles when Fallout 4 is stuck after activating many mods. Clearing content should be treated as troubleshooting, not as a routine way to manage a healthy save: keep your load-order notes and protect saves before removing packages.
If the game reaches the title screen but a particular save hangs, test a separate save or a new game with the same list. If only one save fails, the problem may be tied to that save’s accumulated changes rather than the console’s storage device. If every save and a new game fail after a recent installation, disable the newest group of packages first and retest.

Before installing Creations
- Install the native application. Confirm that the console is using the PS5 or Xbox Series version released on April 25, 2024, rather than launching an older last-generation application where both versions are present.
- Choose a graphics mode. Use the game’s graphics-mode selector to choose Performance or Quality. If you have a 120 Hz display and want the intermediate Quality target, enable the display’s 120 Hz mode at the system level first.
- Plan the load order on paper. List essential fixes, frameworks or requirements, major content, and cosmetic changes before downloading. Keep a copy outside the console.
- Start with a clean test. Launch the unmodded game, load or create a test save, and verify that the native application and display mode work before introducing Creations.
Xbox owners updating around the 2026 storage change
- Save the current order first. Bethesda’s load-order notice specifically asked players to do this before the May 27, 2026 update.
- Expect the first launch to be different. Installed Xbox Creations can be cleared on that launch. Do not interpret an empty list as proof that your account or save has been permanently deleted.
- Restore the minimum set. Re-download or restore the packages required for the save you want to test, then launch before adding optional content.
- Test an older save cautiously. Bethesda expects saves older than November 10, 2025 to be affected by the reset process. Keep an unaffected backup and avoid overwriting it during the first verification launch.
PS5 owners after the update
PS5 installations are preserved through this storage update, so you can begin by checking the existing list and its order. Preservation does not guarantee that every package remains compatible with a particular save or with later updates. If a save fails after the game update, use the same controlled disable-and-test process described in the troubleshooting section instead of deleting the entire list immediately.

Xbox Creations disappeared after an update
- Check whether the first launch after the May 27, 2026 update has completed the reset behavior Bethesda described.
- Use your saved load-order record to restore packages in a controlled sequence.
- Launch with only the packages needed for a test save before restoring optional additions.
- If a package cannot be restored or a save will not load, keep the original save untouched while you isolate the missing or incompatible content.
The game hangs on a loading screen after adding many mods
- Do not repeatedly force the same save to load while changing several packages at once; you will lose the ability to identify the cause.
- Disable the newest group of additions and test a separate save or new game.
- Follow Bethesda’s guidance to clear mods or reinstall when the console remains stuck after activating many mods.
- Rebuild gradually, preserving the load-order notes and a clean save rather than treating a reinstall as proof that the old save is safe.
Performance mode still stutters
- Confirm that Performance mode is selected and that the display is accepting the intended refresh rate.
- Test the same location with all optional Creations disabled. If hitching is present in the clean game, it is consistent with the frame-pacing issue noted in the May 2024 technical re-review.
- If hitching increases only with a particular load order, re-enable packages in small groups and identify the combination responsible.
- Do not use the published 60-FPS target as a guarantee of a perfectly flat frame-time graph; targets and observed frame pacing are different measurements.
The Creations allowance is full
- Remove the least important large packages first, not random small files that may be dependencies for other additions.
- Keep a written record of what you remove so that a later rebuild does not create duplicate or missing requirements.
- On PS5, plan around the smaller fixed budget from the start. On Xbox, use the larger allowance for deliberate content selection rather than installing every available package.
Which version should you buy?
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Large quest, settlement, texture, and gameplay load orders | Xbox Series X|S | The expandable Creations allowance is substantially larger. |
| A short, curated mod list with minimal maintenance | Either platform | Both have native applications and the same documented graphics targets; capacity may not become a constraint. |
| Preserving installed Creations through the 2026 storage update | PS5 | PS5 installations are preserved, while Xbox installations are cleared on the first launch after the update. |
| 60-FPS play | Either platform | Both document a 60-FPS Performance target at 4K with dynamic resolution scaling. |
| Ultra settings on a 120 Hz display | Either platform | Both document a 40-FPS Quality target when connected to 120 Hz. |
| Choosing solely on load-time claims | Neither has a proven universal advantage | No controlled, current benchmark supports a definitive winner. |
If you are buying a bundled edition, check the exact store listing, platform, region, and availability. An Xbox Game of the Year Edition listing describes Fallout 4 plus all six official add-ons, but editions and availability can differ by market and date.
The bottom line
Xbox Series X|S is the better Fallout 4 console for serious mod users because its Creations budget gives you far more room for large or numerous additions. PS5 is the easier choice if you want a compact load order that survives the 2026 storage update without the Xbox first-launch purge. For graphics, both platforms offer the same documented Performance and Quality targets, including the 40-FPS Quality option on a 120 Hz display. For loading, expect a major improvement over last-generation hardware on either native application, but do not trust unsupported claims that PS5 or Xbox always wins: your save and load order matter more than a platform-wide slogan.
